Shanghai authorities on Monday reported the first COVID-19 deaths in the latest outbreak in China’s most populous and wealthiest city.

All three people who died were elderly, had underlying diseases such as diabetes and hypertension and had not been vaccinated against the coronavirus, city Health Commission inspector Wu Ganyu told journalists.

The COVID-19 situation in Shanghai has hit a plateau as daily cases fluctuate and the death toll rises, local health authorities said on Sunday.

Shanghai reported 39 new COVID-19 related deaths on Saturday, three times more than the number of deaths on Friday and also the highest daily toll as the city is battling with China's biggest coronavirus outbreak.

The 39 people who died, averaging 78.7 years old, all had serious chronic diseases, including coronary heart disease and hypertension. None of them had received COVID-19 vaccines, the health officials said at a daily news conference.

"The number of severe and critically ill COVID-19 cases has increased in recent days, and the positive patients with underlying medical conditions, especially the elderly, are at higher risk of developing into severe cases and even dying," said Zhao Dandan, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission.

DJ Real number of Chinese "pandemic" deaths may be much higher. Lots of people-during lockdown-were unable to get help for non-CoVid diseases. But also CoViD may have increased risks of dying from other diseases-showed as main cause of death-in "statistics"...China (via worldometers) reported 48 deaths-from CoViD-in the last 7 days. Cases +29% (from above 15,000 last week to +20,000 this week-but major underreporting..In China often "a case" was someone testing positive WITH SYMPTOMS !-so maybe we are only getting the number of symptomatic cases...).
