I'm a prepper. The prepper community was mercilessly mocked prior to the pandemic(s). We were right and those who mocked us, I'm looking at you Steven Cobert, were wrong. Those who prepared for crisis were sitting at home watching the news while the unprepared duked it out at Costco for the last roll of toilet paper. However, it doesn't make sense to prep for a pandemic that has already been going on for 2 years and shows no signs of ending. Most of us thought that the pandemic, or whatever crisis we were preparing for, would be temporary and that eventually we would go back to our old lives.

That isn't going to happen.

We are experiencing collapse of the old world. Institutions that we had counted on protecting us no longer work. The CDC no longer functions as an agency to safeguard American's health. Instead, it actively spews misinformation that is getting people killed. It has essentially collapsed.

Cops too frightened to intervene sit on the sidelines and watch the mentally unstable slaughter children with military-grade semi-automatic weapons.

A President organized a violent uprising and tried to overthrow the United States government with an attack on Congress.

Nations are failing and their people moving in huge masses to the shrinking numbers of stable countries. Fascist dictators with advanced weapons are invading and preparing to invade their peaceful neighbors with plans for world conquest. How far are we from Mad Max world?

We are experiencing collapse of our trusted institutions, right now. I do not believe that this process is reversible. So, we must accept their loss and move on to protecting ourselves and those we care about from the consequences of this process and work towards building a new, more resilient culture and institutions.

I'm going to start this series of blogs with individual prepping because you can't help someone else if you can't save yourself. I'm not going to just give you a list of stuff to buy. That isn't going to cut in the world we live in now. First thing you need to learn is the scientific method. Yeah, I know that probably wasn't on the top of your list. But trust me, learning this will greatly increase your odds of survival in a challenging and constantly changing environment. No one can foresee all possible contingencies. You need to be able to respond to changing circumstances by using your own brain. You cannot rely on someone else's list of stuff to buy or do.

Here is the scientific method in a nutshell:

1. Observe the world closely.

2. Come up with a guess (hypothesis) to explain what you are seeing.

3. Test your idea with an experiment.

4. Observe the results of your experiment. If your guess was right, great, you're done. If not, use the results of your experiment to formulate a new hypothesis and perform another experiment.

Example. You want to buy a vehicle that can get you from your small farm to a relative's farm. Problem is, there is only a very rough road between your two farms. Which vehicle should you buy? Some would look at car and truck magazines or watch commercials to decide. Wrong approach. The advertisers will use their knowledge of human psychology against you and get you to buy something based on emotion rather than reason. If you use the scientific method, you will go to the road in question, set up a chair, and just watch for a couple of days (bring a book). How do the different vehicles that travel down that road do? Are the drivers hitting their heads on the ceilings of the trucks? Don't buy that one. Is one type of car getting stuck in the ruts? Don't buy that one. Once you identify a vehicle that can handle the road the way you want (and is within your budget!), ask if you can test-drive it on the road you need to drive on.

Notice that this procedure above doesn't require you to belong to a particular political party or religion or ethnic group. It will work equally well for everyone.

There are certain basics that we will all need to think about:

Money, Shelter, Water, Food, Energy, Security, Healthcare and Education

Each one could be (maybe will be) it's own blog. I'll make a few comments now. These are my opinions which may or may be correct and may or may not be right for you. I invite my readers to use the comment section to expand on or disagree with whatever I write.

Money - Don't waste it. Learn to live on as little as possible. If you can, get a remote job.

Shelter - Big cities are death traps. Find a rural property with water that you can grow food on. Stay away from anywhere with a high crime rate.

Water - Have a well and know how to purify water yourself.

Food - Grow your own as much as possible. Support your local farmers.

Energy - Look into solar panels and wind energy. Learn about batteries and electricity in general.

Security - Guns have their place, but keep them secure. There is a special place in Hell for anyone who lets a kid or mentally unstable person kill someone with their gun. Learn how to use other weapons: crossbows, bow and arrows, knives, etc. Learn how to operate a drone with a camera. Keep your place well-lit.

Healthcare - Get fit. Don't eat junk food. Do your chores. If you live on a farm, there will be plenty. Learn some human biology. Get every single vaccine you can. Learn first aid.

Education - Stock a library with books, records and videos that are sufficient to maintain a basic level of civilization. You can collect all of Brad Thor's novels if you want to, but don't forget about math, engineering, biology etc.

More to come.
