Tedros Ghebreyesus: “We have never been in a better position to end the pandemic – we are not there yet, but the end is in sight.”

“Last week, the number of weekly reported deaths from COVID-19 was the lowest since March 2020.”

WHO recommendations for governments:

Plan for surges of cases, and make sure you have the supplies, equipment and health workers you will need;

Maintain infection prevention and control precautions to protect health workers and non-COVID patients in health facilities;

Make sure you have a system in place for giving patients the care that is right for them, and integrate care for COVID-19 into primary health care systems;

and blah, blah, blah….

WHO: WHO Director-General’s opening remarks at the media briefing – 14 September 2022

Does this look like the end of the pandemic to you?

“The number of weekly reported deaths from COVID-19 was the lowest since March 2020″…..

Er, not quite…

DJ, NOT linking MPX with CoViD is anti-science !

DJ, If you ignore lack of testing& reporting, "mild cases", excess deaths and chronic/"long" CoViD https://www.zerohedge.com/covid-19/end-covid-19-sight or https://www.zerohedge.com/covid-19/end-covid-19-sight ;

Delivering his most upbeat message since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, said that the end of the pandemic was finally near.

“We have never been in a better position to end the pandemic. We are not there yet, but the end is in sight,” he said at a media briefing on Wednesday.

Using the image of a marathon runner approaching the finish line, Dr. Tedros warned against complacency, however, saying that “a marathon runner does not stop when the finish line comes into view. She runs harder, with all the energy she has left.”

Statista's Felix Richter notes that while the world is still seeing millions of new Covid-19 cases per week, with the real number probably even higher due to limited testing, those infections are no longer resulting in as many severe cases or deaths as we’ve seen in earlier stages of the pandemic.

You will find more infographics at Statista

The weekly number of deaths is now lower than it has been at the end of March 2020, and it’s been below that level for a couple of months now.

Make no mistake, more than one million people still died from Covid this year, but the latest trend in hospitalizations and deaths is encouraging.

“We can see the finish line,” Dr. Tedros said in conclusion.

“We’re in a winning position. But now is the worst time to stop running.” To help the world cross the line and avoid the risk of “more variants, more deaths, more disruption, and more uncertainty, the WHO released six policy briefs outlining best practices to save lives, protect health systems, and avoid social and economic disruption.

Also one has to ignore new(er) variants evading immunity, billions of CoViD infections undermining immunity against other diseases...

so..."it is over" when cases go down after a wave by the WHO is not even "optimistic" it is a lie...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

Maybe just a look at https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/weekly-trends/ or https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/weekly-trends/ ...europe cases +7%, deaths +14%...even with very limited testing, reporting...67 countries reporting an increase...all over the world...

More realistic https://health-study.joinzoe.com/data#levels-over-time or https://health-study.joinzoe.com/data#levels-over-time self reporting of symptoms...UK cases again increasing...

We did see "pandemic is over" claims before...so far unrealistic...

Is the coronavirus on its way out?

You might think so. New, updated booster shots are being rolled out to better protect against the variants circulating now. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has dropped COVID-19 quarantine and distancing recommendations. And more people have thrown off their masks and returned to pre-pandemic activities.

But scientists say no. They predict the scourge that’s already lasted longer than the 1918 flu pandemic will linger far into the future.

One reason it's lasted this long? It's gotten better and better at getting around immunity from vaccination and past infection. Scientists point to emerging research that suggests the latest omicron variant gaining ground in the U.S. — BA.4.6, which was responsible for around 8% of new U.S. infections last week — appears to be even better at evading the immune system than the dominant BA.5.

Scientists fear the virus may well keep evolving in worrisome ways.

WILL THE NEXT VARIANT BE ANOTHER VERSION OF OMICRON?

Omicron has been around since late last year, with a series of super transmissible versions quickly displacing one another, and Binnicker believes “that will continue at least for the next few months.”

But down the road, he said it's likely a new variant distinct from omicron will pop up.

The recent wave of infections and re-infections, he said, “gives the virus more chances to spread and mutate and new variants to emerge.”

DJ...In fact one could claim "Omicron" already is at least four variants...not one...The WHO wanted Omicron to be the variant ending the pandemic...so they refuse to give all the new variants other names then "Omicron"...it is bad policy...
