Pneumonia shot lasts ages

   FYI   I've just booked pneumonia jabs for 2 members of my family.  I asked the nurse whether I should have one too, given that I had one 10-12 years ago.  She said no, they last for life.  I asked her to double check and she called me back and still said no I didn't need another one. My son was told his would probably last for life and that he certainly didn't need to get another until he reached 60 or so.  So you don't need to worry if you've had one in recent years.  NB We had to get it done privately.  UK NHS won't give it free unless you're over 65 or vulnerable.  Love Beth

	Yes I was told for life and after 10 years you can get a booster shot.

	I don't want to contradict your health care provider and have no idea what vaccine they use in the UK but in the US, most providers use the Pneumovax vaccine. Pneumovax is given to people who are at risk of developing pneumonia and must be over age two years. It is good for 5 years unless you were over 65 when you got your first shot. Then you only need it once. I would call and ask which vaccine was used and look it up if unsure. Not all health care providers (and doctors, unfortunately) know as much as they need to know about the meds they are giving. Scares me, sometimes.

	Pioneer and other uk members Yes it costs �25. No extras.My other son has already had it done and the younger one was also quoted �25. We went to our local private BMI clinic "travel vaccinations" section. We'd tried NHS but to no avail. I got mine NHS after I had a serious chest infection, but that was a decade or more ago. 	Beth: I was told that they do not last for life. That is was once thought that the pneumonia shots lasted for life, but our life spans have changed..have expanded..so NO, they do not last for life according to our nurse. She told me and my children to get a booster shot in about ten years, and that would then ensure that we were covered for the rest of our lives.. This was our first, BTW. ????

	Can anyone tell me how this vaccine works? Does it actually prevent pneumonia from happening as an effect of avian flu? Thanks for any response?

	It is my understanding that the vacine may be good for life. However; the vacine used years ago did not provide protection against as many bacterial causes of pneumonia. The current vacine protects against 23 different bacteria vs 6 or 12? for the older version.(Can't remember how many) The recomendation is for those older than 65 (high risk population) who recieved the vacine over 5 years ago to be vaccinated again.

	I can think of no reason not to get it. We all are, or will be at risk of pnuemonia sooner or later. Doctors may not agree with me.

	Here in the US....my husband was at his pulmonologist today and asked fpr a pneumonia shot and got them. They told him 5 years.......... Yet, it is the US........and we have been known to be capitalists.
