I'm not sure how many Canadians are out there, but the CBC is airing something called Black Dawn: The Next Pandemic tomorrow night at 9 pm, which supposedly is a recreation of what would happen during the course of an outbreak once H2H transmission became a reality.

I'm not how much new information is in it, but apparently they spoke with a bunch of experts who might provide some valuable insight on how the government will respond when it happens.

Canadian docudrama follows a family through a future flu pandemic

Social chaos, food, water and power shortages, as well as thousands seriously sick and dead, that's the reality in the Canadian Broadcasting Company's new hour-long docudrama about a future flu pandemic. Black Dawn: The next Pandemic, to be aired in Canada this evening, answers the question "what would happen if the World Health Organization declared what has long been expected and feared: human-to-human transmission of the avian flu virus?”

Using fake news broadcasts to provide context, the program follows the fictional MacDonald family through key moments, as they struggle to survive the first wave of a flu pandemic caused by the H5N1 bird flu virus. During the course of the program you experience the difficulties Jane MacDonald, a nurse at a local General hospital, suffers as she struggles with the sick at work, while trying to keep her son and young daughter safe at home. It is unforgiving in it's depiction of the many challenges the family faces and graphic in its description of the sick.

But there is a serious message contained in the program, reinforced by quotes from current-day experts — a future pandemic is likely to quickly overwhelm any efforts to maintain what constitutes normal life. It will be individual families who will be in the front line. Ordinary people, just like you, who might face food shortages and no power or running water supplies. You, who will be forced to ask yourself whether one can risk going to work, knowing that you might bring the virus home with you. Your family who might get sick and die. Far fetched? Don't bet on it, get prepared.

Black Dawn: The next Pandemic will be shown at 9pm today Canadian time, and is expected to be shown in the US in the near future. Our thanks to CBC for providing an advanced copy to review.

Thanks meewee. A friend of mine actually pointed me to a promo of the piece that I'm sure you can look at even if though it's only airing here in Canada. The info he got was:

ftp://ftp03.cbc.ca/promo/temp
username: jlong, password: 4cbctemp

It looks pretty good, albeit slightly frightening.

I saw the avian flu docudrama. Its was well done. Actors depicted how there will be food shortages, water shortages, traffic jams and schools closing down. They showed hospitals, and morgues being overcrowded. They had to lay bodies on the ice in ice rinks. The first wave of the flu goes on for months. The overall feeling one gets from the experts they interview while the drama is unfolding is there is no hope. Pretty scary.
