I recently read that we should wash eggs before we crack the shell and make sure they are cooked all the way thru.    I feel an easier way to handle this is just to boil the eggs, should kill any lingering germs.  Does anyone else have any other ideas to help us avoid getting contaminated, by this virus?

Without looking up the info for, sorry too tired, bad, bad week...

They (don't you love those ubiquitous "they") feel that the last egg a sick chicken lays is the one with a possibility of being contaminated by AI.  When I read this I interpreted it to mean a chicken that way DYING from AI, doesn't address a chicken who may be a-symptomatic.  So look at the odds of H5N1 being in your egg producers flock and then the possibility that you got a "last egg"...pretty minuscule odds...but not zero.

The thing with eggs is that H5N1 virus lives longer the colder it is.  Where do we store our eggs?

Disinfecting outer shells:

Several options I would imagine: 

1) Plop in a bowl of vinegar, natural disinfectant and no chemicals to harm you.

2) Throw under a medical grade UV lamp

3) Wash.  Good ole soap and water should be fine, just use lots and lots and keep those hands away from your face while you are handling them.

4) Use some interesting disinfectant like vodka, whiskey, wine...

5) Don't eat them.  I'm not an egg eater so this one doesn't bother me, but we used to eat A LOT of chicken.  I already miss it.  Last trip to store it was pork and fish.  How long will the pork last????  I don't imagine very long.

Sophia, thank you very much, I didn't know vinigar was a natural disinfectant, I'll have to pick up a gallon, do you think it would be a good idea to include it in my diet, regularly?

I have always wash my eggs before cracking the shell...just a tad of soap and warm water.
