Finally a local USA Cable News Story to warn the people!  www.news10now.com reported:

OFFICALS WARN AMERICANS TO PREPARE FOR BIRD FLU OUTBREAK

1/11/06  11:52 am   American officials are warning people to be prepared for the bird flu.  Although it isn't here it is making headlines in Turkey, Indonesia and China.  This week, the Fed. Gov. Dept. of Health and Human Services called on people to get informed and get prepared and local experts are doing the same.

The virus know as H5N1 has mostly affected birds.  But it has killed humans, too.  The deadly flu hasn't made its way to the US yet, but health officials say it could.  They warn any pandemic could last months.  Their best advice, in the event of an outbreak, is to stay away from people and stay close to home.  They also advise you to stock up on at least a 3 day supply of bottled water, food and medical supplies.

"Of course in Central New York we are in the middle of winter and so besides the food and the medical supplies, we may allso need to think about heat, whatever makes you comfortable, can keep you comfortable," said Dr. Quoc Nguyen, Co. Health Dept. Medical Director.

Dr. Nguyen says there's no evidence that the bird flu can pass easily from one hum to the next.

I PRAY THAT THIS TV STATIONS IS LEADING THE WAY TO WARN PEOPLE ABOUT WHAT MAYBE COMING!

Paul you are right the three days is crazy but at least it is a start to get the word out to the people that something is going on.  On the other hand if they hear "three days" they would probably think they have enough food to last that long in their kitchens.

WHERE IS GERALDO RIVERA????  You think he would jump on this.

It's scary to consider how scared the government is of creating a panic.

Ok, I am starting to get scared.

Yet I am sitting here eating a chicken burrito while reading this.... I figure either way, chicken is going to become a premium meat whether this thing goes h2h or not. Better enjoy it while we can.

There's nothing to be scared of.  This forum is growing by the minute!  We're going to form one huge team and we're all going to fight the superflu together.  At least that's what Paul and Corn told me lol.

However, we may have to look this thing straight in the face before it's over -- So it's time to shake the fear and to begin the fight.

Lets face it.  It's never going to ever get any better.  This thing will continue to get worse..... That is just  a fact.   A world in which the birds grow to be our enemy.....  The Russians have just declared war on all birds too lol.   Didn't someone here recently ask if this is hell......?

Are you depressed yet   ?

I'm got scared enough to buy 50 lbs of rice and 25 lbs of beans, 4 cases of capri suns, and a new knee pillow yesterday.  Also bought about 100 rolls of toilet paper but I don't expect to use any as I'm scared sh*tless

The birds as our enemy...

I have a resident flock of Canadian Geese that I used to love, they are so majestic in flight.  I even have several paintings I did about 10 years ago of them hanging on my wall.  But now every time I see the birds I experience revulsion, I just want to break out the bird gun and start shooting. I want those birds GONE and if I could I would gladly assist their exit.  I totally understand how the Russians feel!

As an aside, I've always viewed those birds as an emergency food source if TSHTF (ala: you might be a survivalist thread).  Now they are about as welcome as a nest of water moccasins.

I think shooting birds is silly.  No way you can kill em all.  Besides you don't even know if they're infected.  It's Bush mentality...kill em because IF YOU DON'T they might kill you.  With that kind of logic were all DOOMED

I think everyone has an idea about everything and that's good/  Instead of counting how many people have the flu and the projections for the next week or worrying about WHO or any other type of government agency, wouldn't we be much better off, just pooling our thoughts on how to stay alive if this comes.  Isn't this the time to think of survival tactics?

Paul - Only 100 rolls?  I'm up to 500 for just myself.  You're going to be down to paper towels in about a month lol.  I bought toilet paper before I bought food lol.  Wait...... Why am I talking about this again.....

Mod, I was thinking about poisening the humming bird feeders .

That was probably a bad joke

Mountain,

We seem to address all AI issues here and sometimes it just helps to vent.  But the reason all of us found our way here was to find answers and exchange ideas.  Do you have specifics you would like to address?

Survival tactic theories here range from "run and hide", "Bolt the door"  and "once again into the breech".  What's the approach you would like to explore?

BTW: While I'm sure Paul truly feels culling birds to be stupid and immoral he also just likes to yank my chain.

Every winter I put out my bird feeders and enjoying watching the birds from my kitchen window.  This year I didn't get them out.  I worry because I have horses and have many birds living in my stable.  This morning I had to clean up bird poop before I could put food in the feeding trough.  I washed my hands very well afterward.  It made me think what I would do if these birds develop the flu...how would I feed my horses?

Alot of birds exsist because we do feed them every year thru the winter. this has helped to artifically maintain reproduction. If we all stop feeding them around the world there will be hundreds  of millions more die.

what do we do with the birds? I dom't know. It's the people who are the carriers now. do we cull them?

We need to have a decent amount odf birds left over when all is said and done.

A bat eats 3000-5000 mosquitoes a day.

Birds are skillful insect hunters.

Bird population drops there will be an explosion of insects. the next plague.

If you ever saw how many birds are in Alaska, you would realize the futility of trying to kill even 1% of them.  Save your ammo for people, they will be a bigger threat for sure.
And Sophie, yes your chain is fun to yank but I haven't felt the need recently and certainly not on this bird subject.
