Now, now. I'm a WHO supporter and believer. When things start picking up in the next couple of months, you won't see WHO taking the weekend off and updating things on Monday, but for now thats just the way it is.
Snick, I believe that forums such as this one will continue through anything as long as the communications hold out. We are all moving toward the preparedness ideal of the LDS Church. The Mormons try to keep a years worth of food and supplies on hand at all times, and rotate their stocks to keep them fresh and to be aware of the needs. We can all learn a lesson from them. Disasters don't have to mean chaos and everybody fall down. We can be there standing on our own feet, and ready to keep our community stable and strong.
The bonds we forge in this forum are built on our words of support and challenge to each other. I don't 'know' you, but I read your words and would like to know more about your thoughts and feelings. This forum breaks down the 'Me' generation and converts it to the 'We' generation.
Thank you for all you do.

When you give birth to a post, you lose control of the thread.
The original post is merely the catalyst for the subsequent comments.

Snickle, The question reposed " what will happen to all of us BF addicts if nothing happens?" Well you'll have alot of canned ham and bottled water for one. I think a lot of you will be disappointed to be honest. Hate to say it but generaly with on-line forums its either with people who really suffer from boredom, lack physical contact with others and feel a need for friendship,

Why should the thread be removed??
I have to say, people who are on this site in general are scared of themselves. Someone talks about this thing not happening and people get crazy, mad. I know why I have stayed away from this and other sites like them, fear and idiotic information. Yep prepare, have extra water and food, move on and live your life with gusto and for gods sake get away from your computer and exercise! |

Cocktail: I don't fit any of your categories. I am happily married, well educated and my life is immeasurably rich. Your characterization of my post completely missed the mark. Try reading it again, and this time look for deeper meaning.
new person: I am afraid of many things. Fear is good. Fear is a natural survival instinct. But I am not afraid of myself. In my life I have dealt with many sources of fear, including being shot at by people who intended to kill me. Unless your in that category please don't make assumptions about me.
Jaxmax: Your right, it just didn't go where I intended. Oh, well. I'll try again on another topic. LOL!

I think if it doesn't happen it will be a good thing because I'm not nearly ready. Not ready to see my children die, my family, or myself. On the other hand this site has given me a different perspective on many things, like how difficult it would be to live without our modern conveniences(sp?). I'm going to take many of these tips/advice to live a more self-reliant life. Why can't I produce more of my own food, use less power from the energy companies, and be less reliant on all the modern conveniences.
I think this site is enabling us to be responsible for our own destinies. To understand that this could all change anytime, and to be ready just in case.

Hi, guys. Just got back late last night. I have two questions:
1. When can anybody decide that BF is not mutating and will never mutate?? The initial question which started the thread implies some finite time-line.
2. Currently the moderators are paying out-of-pocket to keep this forum growing and alive. I don't know their financial circumstances, but I would imagine their resources are much more finite than BF. So, if we want to keep it going, we need to start chipping in. That includes myself, much to my chagrin I have not yet donated to the cause, but I will rectify that.

Hopefully, as I have wished for almost a year now, it will mutate down
to a relatively mild flu and just be as much of an annoyance as H3N2 is
every year (with a few fatalities, but mostly people sick for a few
days and then back at work or school.)

Funny you should mention Y2K. Many organizations prepared for that possible catastrophe, and nothing happened at midnight going into the year. However, the Northeast region of the country served by the Niagara power grid did shut down plunging these same organizations into what would have been even larger chaotic situations had the Y2K planning not been done. Preparedness pays off as anyone that has been in a disaster can attest. You may have prepared for a different situation, but the training can be put to use in other types of scenarios. This is called an AllHazards Approach. This is the direction you should go with your planning, training and preparation activities, even if thismonth or this year these outbreaks that are being reported turn out to be other diseases, not H5N1 outbreaks.

That said, I would add that we all spend much of our lives for preparing for many things. Given the state of the world today, and life in general, one would think that most people would have already been slightly prepared for something like this. We buy insurance, we plan our funerals and make the arrangements before we die, we all put money back for retirement, for the kid's college years, save up the money for downpayments on homes and businesses. No one labels us as being over the edge for any of that but when we prepare for catastophy, sudden we're nuts, eh? Is it so much of a oddity for us to prepare for a natural disaster that will likely happen sometime in our lives? I think not.

I think after this, if it doesn’t happen, I'm back to wantin’ to change the world! I remember when I was a little girl and I saw my mom spraying goops of hairspray on and it fillin' the whole bathroom and it flying out the window..and I’d say, "Mom, where is all that hairspray going? Is that not going to kill the birds?" "Not at all,” she’d say and hoosh me out.
Then dad 'd be pouring something yeuk down the sink and I'd say, "Dad, where is all that yeuk going, is it going to end up in the ocean and kill all the fish?" So today I was up at the first grade school concert. My little boy was singing on stage with 5 other first grade classes. They sang about the earth and how they pledged to protect it, how they wanted to clean it and see the birds fly and the grass grow. They sang about all things green and about how rich nature was. We need to do a little more than call out, "The Sky is Falling" , like Chicken Licken and the gang. Henny Penny, Ducky Lucky, Goosey Loosy and the bunch of them finally got eaten up by the fox.
They didn't ask the right questions.
Their focus was the sensation, not the substance.
Let's identify the fox. Let’s ask what has prompted this dire response from Mother Earth. What have we done to provoke the earth into creating something that might finish us all off?
My little son said on the way home from the concert, "Mom, I know why the bird flu is coming, Nature is so stressed out over what we have done to the earth, she wants to wipe it all out and start all over again." Is that what we want? Are we willing to trade our luxuries and excesses on our children’s and Grandchildren’s inheritance? Do we want to party in the streets while looking the other way?
Maybe if we all started asking questions like "why" and "who" and "what" we can I do, then it’s not just one little kid out to change the world, but a whole planet of people who realize that this treasure we own, this earth we have, really belongs to the children. And if we are brave enough to ask the questions, we just might get answers.

Thanks for the post Sprit. And, on behalf of me and myselves, welcome to the forum. What you are suggesting is very thought provoking. Could this on-line community evolve into a medium for turning things around and heading in an entirely new direction?
Don't be disappointed if you don't get a really positive response. It seems to me that most members here are good people, but right now it seems they're (me too!) focused on just survivning what they see as inevitable.
But, wow! I believe we will survive, and then what .......

Pandemics, terrorism, wars, etc., are probabilities and "what if's" in our lives right now.
If it all falls thru, GREAT, but think of other "disasters" (personal/nature) that could happen in our lives - and, consider yourselves prepared for them as well. Like the loss of income/employment due to the death or serious illness of the family's main provider, nature's wrath of hurricanes, winter storms, floods, tornados. It's nice to give to the food banks, but I think it is also being responsible to your family to have something to fall back onto "just in case."

I for one have learned, again, that life is precious. That we are
preparing is, I hope, not because of a fear of death, but an
affirmation that life is worth living. So to address
Snickllefritz' question.....I, for one, will wake up each day and not
take my life for granted, but live it as fully as I can.
I hope, that if pandemic flu hits, I will remember to do the same. (That is where my preparations come into play......to allow me to be able to so.) |

Snickle, we prepared for Y2K and nothing happened. We were very happy about that, and have used most of our preps for that that were perishable.
We also had many preps that were commercially packaged, vacuum packed cans with a shelf life of 15 to 20 years. (If properly stored) We still have those, and we are still using canned goods from 1998! (Currently replacing them with freshly canned goods) We have not had a single bad can from our preps dating back to 1998, and all has been useable and palitable. I guess the point I am trying to make is that there is virtually no downside to preparing for an emergency. If nothing happens, then your grocery bill goes down to almost nothing for months. And then you can begin rotating your stock and keep your prepared status ALL THE TIME, without adding anything to your monthly grocery bill. There is no down side to being prepared. |

People, Iran with a Nuke is more of a problem than the Bird Flu.
A great world war is in the offing with every country having a dog in the fight. OIL, it makes the world go round and most of it is under the ground in countries that dislike america and the west. Bird Flu, ain't nothin like when the nukes start flyin. All the water and canned food will not help then. |

Being prepared is always a good idea. What about localized disasters? (blizzard, Katrina, nuclear terrorism?) I remember watching people line up to go into the Superdome with no food, no water, no diapers , no meds. I know that poverty had a lot to do with that particular debacle, but if you wereprepared, you won't be that guy paying ten bucks for a bottle of Gatorade.
Just a little of thinking globaly and acting locally!

An interesting question, we live in very uncertain times. It would probably be a good idea to keep this forum as a general preparedness forum.
I really feel by the 1000's of post I have read that I know some of these people ( even ones I do not agree with). I am also not so sure there is going to be a cutoff date for birdflu. Birdflu is very much like watching a slow motion train wreck. This is the first time in history we get to see a pandemic developing. This BF is a litmus test for intelligence, it would be very unwise not to be preparing for a Pandemic based on just the latest news we have available to us on this day. I would also (based on the 1918 flu ) not let down my guard because this turns into a milder form of flu. In 1918 the first wave was mild the second wave deadly.
I did prepare for Y2K, I can see I maybe relied too much on some sources of information. I am trying not to make the same mistake twice. I did lose credibility with some people I know. I don't regret making preps or being prepared. We used alot of preps, up donated some to food drives and I am now up to speed on getting ready for Bird flu because of the knowledge I gained prepping for Y2K. We ate up alot of them which really helped the budget. Living in California I do chuckle when I see some news story on getting ready for the next big earthquake.
To my mind our ( the western worlds) system dependent, just in time , cut corners at all cost, everything for a profit today view is the thing that is setting us up for a fall and it will be overwhelming what ever causes it. I intend to be ready.
