We have all probably heard of the Belgian journalist who came down with flu like symptoms upon returning from covering the current outbreak in Turkey.

The journalist did not have the H5N1 (Avian Flu) but he did have the flu which was a variation on the H3 common human flu.  This means that Van a city in Turkey has both the H5N1 and the normal H3?? Virus.   This exposes the world to the very real threat of gene swapping by the more common human flu and the more virulent avian flu.

I lost the link to the article, but will post it as soon as I find it again.

There are so many variables in play now, that we can now only wait to see what mother nature comes up with.  I see the chance of human intervention in containing an emerging virus approaching zero.

I am no alarmist by any means, but facts are facts.  I would say that new strain is imminent.

"Turkey is seeing a fatality rate of 20 percent which is lower than the fatality rate observed in Asia, which was around 58 percent," Cristiana Salvi, a spokeswoman for the world health body's mission in Turkey, said in the capital, Ankara, citing early detection and treatment as the primary cause.

"There could be other factors which we are investigating as a lot of cases are still in hospital," she cautioned, however, noting the need for further observations. "We need to know how the cases progress," she said, adding of the 20 confirmed cases of the virus in the country, four had died. All but two of the cases involved young people or children below the age of 18, the WHO official said.

Something is changing. They seem to look at the death rate as a good thing. When in retrospect it may be a bad thing. Mutating to a more easily transmittable disease at 20% death rate. If it mutates futher(hth) and we have a 10-5 % death rate that would still be enormous.

Gosh, a 20% death rate with normal flu ease of transmission would sure destroy my "mild flu" theory.  Not only that, but it would destroy world stability and lead to far more greater problems around the globe.

Pray for no easy human to human transmission.  If not that, pray for a mild flu.
