Just came back from shopping. At Safeway they had an in-store advertising (for lack of a better description) talking about the need to prepapre for any emergency and to stock up NOW! Did not mention Bf specifically, but that seems to be the gist since they mentioned the recommendation by WHO and CDC.

I see and hear a lot of "prepare" ads and articles. And I still meet a lot of people who have no idea about bird flu.

The cashing in goes on regardless. Down to the last tin of soup the food chain will compete for our custom and Madonna thinks she's English.

I agree with you Mountainwinds. I think that Safeway is doing the right thing. I wish all stores would do it to warn people. I talk to people all the time that doesn't have a clue about BF. The more stores that are offering specials the better for all of us. Maybe there will be a price war on preps and the poorest among us will be able to stock up! Just a thought. |

Well, I know I keep posting local water prices here, but I just came back from the store and it's gone UP again!!!! I was paying $1.85/3pk then it went to $2.07/3pk and today it was $2.11/3pk! We also have the chance of seeing the opposit happening w/ supply & demand! Wait till after the movie, next week to see what happens then! I'm thinking it would be better to get a 2nd kiddie pool, but I have no idea where I'd put it!-k

Water is 64 cents a gallon here at Walmart. But the water is getting harder to come by.
I was thinking it would be good to get Gatorade, Pedialyte, Ensure, any protein drink, or protein bar would be good. At our Walmart, you can get Sams Choice pop.....7up in case you do get sick.....25 cents for a two liter bottle. My basement is starting to look like a store.

wenmalon: 'My basement is starting to look like a store.' -- We're actually getting our storage are above the garage properly set up for storing --- getting pull down steps to access area and plywood for flooring ... something we probably should have done years ago ... but my prepping is taking over to the point of little floor space in our basement and Christmas decorations, etc. are getting in my way!!! They will all go in garage and my preps will be nice and cool in the dark storage are down there!-k

That's a great idea. Just one more thing for me to add to my husband's prep todo list. He will be so happy. He's a saint for putting up with my bird flu paranoya. It is getting his attention with the mumps spread though! Well..........I've more shopping to do. Garbage bags are on sale.

Did another trip for canned goods this morning. Skipped the workout at the gym, and got a good workout lugging everything downstairs. A definite mini-mart going on down there now......would really like some Windex & Soft-scrub....but right now all my money has to go for food if I'm suppose to stock up for a possible 8 months to a year. What has happened to my life??????

Idea: Save all bottles you use (plastic and glass), fill them with tap H20, add 2 drops chlorine per quart, and seal.
It's free.

Wenmalon, you mentioned the water at Walmart for 64c for a gallon. Are those the clear plastic bottles with a blue or purple cap? If you were talking about these, we bought a lot of those, had them stored for a while, but the material decomposed after a while and left us with a leaky mess. Not all leaked, but quite a few. I hope yours won't, but you might want to keep an eye on that, or put them in different containers.

I still dont see the stored water idea...
Yes stockpile a few - Yes stockpile used empty bottles and be ready.
But the taps wont run dry the day the pandemic starts.
When it starts fill your bottles -then recycle the water till your tap runs dry - then only then start to add your chlorine. this way your water is as fresh as possible.
I think overall the water supply will be intermitent - better putting your efforts into a water tank in your loft - this will self fill when supply is available -
also water captur and tanks of your down pipes from your roof - fresh rain water.
and look for your nearest spring...

...LOL! Good one! Pathetic if you think about it. I guess there will always be a way to capitalize on disaster. I have noticed that more and more supermarkets are offering microbial wipes and hand cleaner where the shopping carts are. I have known a couple to do it but lately it seems that more and more stores are following the lead. Better to be safe than sorry. Just have to wonder though why it has taken so long for this one meager concept to catch on?

I've been saving my 2 liter bottles and milk jugs for this, there are alot of places around where I live to get fresh spring water. My thoughts were to buy something that distills the water in case the supply gets contaminated.

Grace,
I think they are a Green cap - spring water, walmart brand. Thanks for letting me know.
I too, save plastic bottles and store water in them and if you go to the Church of Latter Day Saints ?? (someone else had mentioned on the forum earlier...they have GREAT IDEAS for storing water and food).
southerngentuk -
I see your point on the stored water. Yes it's true the taps won't run dry, the day the pandemic hits.
My concern was that the virus can live in the water. The pandemic will be here, way before they announce it (if it isn't already). They are saying that chicken is safe to eat if it's cooked. So I am using the same premise behind the water concept? One of my most vivid memories watching the aftermath of Katrina was the lack of water. I want to have it on hand before I have to buy it, because it will run out quickly.

Two years ago, I bought 2 large black plastic barrels to catch rain water in. I use it to water my garden, even though I have a well and use that water as well. Got to thinking about the water issue the other day. Don't plan to use water from those barrels for drinking anyway, so the other day I filled them up and put some goldfish in each one. That way I don't have to add anything to keep the mosquito larvae from hatching. The goldfish will eat the larvae and fertilize the water for my plants. In a pinch I could still use the water for flushing.

Chicken quaters are now .19 cents a pound (with a 20 pound limit). Right now I think chicken is the only thing that is cheap.
