If you think Oprah doesn,t belong on this part of the site, then you didn't see the episode she had on today.  My wife recorded it with me because I have been educating her on the subject.  Amazing material, I was blown completely away.  If you haven't see it, get and watch.  I was astounded that this guy came forward and said, and I quote "The avian flu pandeminc WILL happen, we don't know when or how hard it is going to hit."  He spoke of the 1918 flu pandemic alot.  Tamiflu is mildly effective but it is the only treatment available.......Applause to Oprah

Dr Osterholm has been very vocal for about how we will be up the creek without a paddle.  He is the only one with credentials that has had the b*lls to speak about how bad it COULD be.  Note: NOT will be, but could be.

I remember the first time I heard him speak during this past summer.  I thought I was sitting great at 9 months of supplies.  More than enough to comfortably see me through any crisis from pandemic flu.  Then he comes on a conference stage and says 12 - 18 months.  That's when I emptied our savings account at the bank.  How the hell does an average person prepare for THAT kind of time frame!?

SophiaZoe,

The average person cannot and will not plan for a 12-18 month supply of food.   We are fat and lazy this day in age.   There is going to be total chaos after the first few weeks when the grocery stores are closed.

I will have to force myself to eat very little so I will blend in with all the other starving people.    I truly hope it does not get as bad as I am planning for.   Total and utter chaos is my game plan.  If anything less than that happens I will be very happy.

I'm gonna quote Dr Osterholm here...I heard him say this so I know it's not an urban myth in the Flubie community....

"We're screwed."

Sophia there is a way we can let those folks know from Ophra's site where to go...go there and post this web-site and flu-wikie and any other...Let's not be vain here! These people will read the posts above and below theirs.  Like I said on the other site...her hands may be tied as to what info to release, but ours is not! Sneaky...Yes but might save a few lives! And is that not what these sites are for?

I guess my post didn't upload...wasn't ignoring you meewee.

You aren't allowed to post links on her boards.  They remove them lickety-split.  The information has been salted though... Google this....

Who knows, I hope people are motivated enough to look beyond the surface of this.  but I am so far out of touch with the main stream American woman that I really have no clue how they are likely to react.

CCMom...IIRC you said you were going to Costco, did you see anything unusual?

I just watched the Oprah episode. I'm glad she had Michael Osterholm on. I first heard him on an interview on NPR about a year ago talking about bf and that's what kept me interested in learning more about it. I think the show did a pretty good job in educating the average person watching. Not as in depth as this forum but enough to get people thinking about stocking up, taking responsibility and not depend on the government to take care of us. My mom and sisters are Oprah fans so I directed them to watch the show rather than me try to explain. Its wierd but they're more likely to pay more attention if it comes from her. Which is cool. As long as they get the message.

It was a great show indeed...I really don,t think the average Jane and Joe thou are going to start doing the neccessary things to prepare...He played it up and then played it down..not even they know what will happen...

The part that I found the most dissapppointing was at the beggining of one of the commercial breaks they said and when we return what to stock up on and not what food s not to stock up on..and when they came back not a word about it.

Normal people need step by step instuctions..things perfectly spelled out for them or they just won,t get it...alot of them will follow the attitude of..when it gets near then I,ll worry or then I wil do something about it...I have been following this for about a year now, and it is amazing how shut  people are about this..Oprah may have hit a few veiwers...but most who watched are like us the followers...

I don,t think as many where effected as we may have thought it would...

If I remember correctly, he said that at some point ANOTHER pandemic in our history WILL happen, not if, but WHEN. He said that he didnt know if Avain flu was going to be that pandemic.

THIS IS VERY DISTURBING!!!!  Notice there's no evidence of this women being exposed to poultry.

Avian influenza – situation in China – update 2

25 January 2006

The Ministry of Health in China has confirmed the country’s tenth case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus.

The case occurred in a 29-year-old woman from Chengdu City in the south-central province of Sichuan. She developed fever on 12 January and was hospitalized with symptoms of pneumonia. Authorities say her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she died on 23 January.

Information provided to WHO indicates that she was self-employed in a shop selling dry goods. No information on possible exposure to diseased birds as the source of her infection is presently available, but an investigation is under way. Close contacts have been placed under medical observation.

This is the second human case reported this year in China, both from Sichuan Province. The two Sichuan cases occurred in different prefectures located around 150 km apart. A confirmed outbreak of H5N1 in poultry began in late December in another part of the province. No outbreaks have been confirmed in the areas where the two human cases resided.

During 2005, Chinese agricultural authorities reported 32 outbreaks in poultry in 12 provinces, resulting in the culling of more than 24 million birds. The appearance of human cases in areas without reported poultry outbreaks is a cause for concern. WHO recommends that, in China, testing for possible H5N1 infection should be undertaken in all cases of severe respiratory disease having no alternative diagnosis, even when no poultry outbreak has been reported in the patient’s area of residence.

Of the ten cases confirmed in China, seven have been fatal. The cases have occurred in 7 provinces and regions: Anhui, Guangxi, Liaoning, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, and Sichuan. No poultry outbreaks have been officially reported in two of these provinces.

i, too, think that oprah did a good job with her show.  correct me if i'm wrong......didn't Michael Osterholm only recommend that people stock up on 4-5 weeks worth of food and water?  if i heard him correctly, i'm disappointed that he didn't suggest better preparation.

but on the other hand he did mention a few times that it would last a year to 18 months...

I think this program was a test run to see how many people would take the threat serious enough..remember right now it is just that a hidin threat..I don,t think anyone knows what is really going to happen..and it drives me crazy at times..I think they know more then what they are saying or on the other hand they could just not know...

I am still going for the long run prep..gardening things...I am looking at the worst case scenario and going for it...but doing it step by step..I am very fortunate to have started prepping years ago....and have at times given all my stock away to start all over again...

My freinds love it when I do the clean out cupboard day....

I have seen some of the posts in the O site...and I am still amazed that there are not as many newbies in there as i would have imagined...
