Ha Noi (VNA) - Two more cases of bird flu have been identified in the Czech Republic in recent days, bringing the country's total number of cases to 14, according to the State Veterinary Administration (SUS). Two wild swans were found dead near the village of Kostice in the southeast of the country, SUS said on May 19, adding that in one of them the presence of a highly pathogenic virus was detected. He said any formal identification of the H5N1 virus, potentially fatal to humans, would be made by the national laboratory charged with the task in the coming days. Protection and surveillance zones with a radius of three kilometres and 10 kilometres respectively have been established around Kostice. The same day, Denmark reported its first outbreak of the H5N1 strain of bird flu in domestic fowl. The Danish Institute for Food and Veterinary Research confirmed that the outbreak was in a backyard poultry flock on the central island of Funen. The owners had contacted authorities after 47 birds in the flock died earlier this week. Denmark previously had confirmed 47 cases of H5N1 in wild birds. Meanwhile, Romanian Agriculture Minister Gheorghe Flutur said on May 19 that the bird flu virus has continued to spread across the country. Speaking on Romanian television, he said 20 outbreaks had been confirmed over the past week, bringing the number of localities affected to over 60.-Enditem link |
