Akzo Nobel develops bird flu vaccine

12 June 2006

AMSTERDAM – Intervet, a subsidiary of Dutch chemicals company Akzo Nobel has developed a vaccine against both bird flu and Newcastle disease, the company announced on Monday.

The prototype vaccine, which Inervet developed in cooperation with the German Friedrich Loeffer Institute, can be administered to large groups of birds by atomised spray.

Presently birds can only be treated by injection, which means vaccinating them one by one. The new vaccine will be tested in the field next year.

Dutch Agricultural organisation LTO says it is excited at the development of the new vaccine. “Vaccination against Newcastle disease is already standard,” said a spokesmen. “It is

important that this duo-vaccine is accepted worldwide."

Many countries presently maintain a ban on importing meat and eggs from animals and birds that have been vaccinated.

Sounds that it is a vaccine for the birds, not human. Which I would then wonder about that since it is claimed that a human vaccine can only be made once the virus has mutated to be easily spread H2H2H.
