I saw reference to this on YouTube today. I'm surprised that I haven't seen this in the media until I went looking for it. H5N1 has a 60% fatality rate in humans. The questions that need asking are Did this little girl have direct contact with chickens? If the answer is no, then we need to worry because it may mean she caught it from another person. As yet there hasn't been easy human to human transmission with H5N1 and this has been our saving grace. The second question is how are her immediate family? If other members are sick then that might also suggest H 2 H transmission, even if they keep chickens. Finally I can't find any reports on how she is. |

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

A nine-year-old girl became the first case of influenza A-H5 (avian flu) in humans recorded in Ecuador, reported Tuesday the Ministry of Public Health (MSP). "It is presumed that the infection was caused by direct contact with birds carrying the virus," the health ministry said in a statement. The MSP reported that the case, identified in the Ecuadorian province of Bolivar (center), was confirmed in the National Institute of Research and Public Health (Inspi) laboratory. "So far, no other human cases have been reported," the note adds. DJ, Lots of H5N1 a.o. also in Peru...so there is a risk of further spread/cases in Latin America.... |
