I watched the whole 20 minute Youtube (I rarely do that) and found myself going down the deep dark YouTube tunnel this morning watching associated videos. All of the right wing, all of them criticizing the ineptitude of this administration. Gee. What a surprise. The one theme I followed in the three or so vids I watched was that it was all processed foods that were problem areas. Oh... and turkeys (but not in my area.) Another, gee what a surprise moment. If I may, the ineptitude of American cooks is the problem. I mean, does anyone know how to make dishes from scratch anymore? I'd also like to add that the only reports I've seen are of the big box stores like Walmart, Target and Costco, who depend heavily from shipments from China to keep their prices low. Only one local market by me seems to be having a problem keeping shelves stocked and it is a grocery franchise that uses Chinese suppliers. Further, I'm still not seeing shortages here in the northeast. Everything I've needed (or wanted) was stocked. My sister in SC is reporting the same. Of course we had to have a good giggle about how people just don't cook anymore after she relayed a neighbor in meltdown over not being able to find pie crusts. Good woman she is, she went over and made them for her so she could have them in the freezer ready to fill for the pumpkin pie. But that's what I mean about American cooks. I saw more shortages during the lockdown here in the northeast than I am now. Granted, I may eat my words if the Port of Newark ever starts having problems. That and trucking from Newark is short rather than long trips to the midwest from Los Angeles. But, I never had a problem getting toilet paper and other paper goods when it was in the news that the big box stores were unable to keep things in stock. But there again, I shop at smaller franchise or privately owned grocery stores. That being said, I am still stocking up. There isn't a problem now, but there will be, I think. I've already bought extra flour and salt. Next up is sugar, honey and cooking oil. And yes, I've noticed a very discernable uptick in prices. I believe prices will get worse, particularly through spring. The biggest problem we Americans face is getting the latest electronics for Christmas. Virtually all of those items come into California ports. But instead of drama Drama DRAMA, Americans can see it as an opportunity to return to a more traditional Christmas rather than the consumer-fest it has become in the last 40 or so years. I'm doing gift cards this year. Let "the kids" make their own decisions this year. |

As Witchy said, what I am noticing is mostly pre-packaged, "shortcut" foods are harder to find. However, whole categories of frozen vegetables are gonzo around here. And some chicken and steak products, also. I used to be able to get a whole fryer chicken to make soup for $10-$11; now it's $13+ for something scrawnier. And there are a lot fewer choices for steaks, and they are out of sight price-wise. A pound of filet mignon, which my mother and I enjoy about twice a year, pre-pandemic would cost about $15 a pound; now it's about $26/pound. And where you might easily find around 10 different varieties of steak, with, say, 6-12 packages of each variety in the case, now there are about 6 varieties of steak, with about 4-6 packages in each. There's less bacon and pork chops, but alot of ground beef, which I am surprised to find on sale periodically at pre-pandemic rates of $3.99/pound for a 3 pound package. For the most part, as long as you stay around the outside edges of the store, you will be able to find what you want. Thank God for being able to cook, which as Witchy said, is becoming like a lost art. When I was still working at the plaza, I had a little side hustle selling soup. Now mind you, my co-workers and I could get our break meals from Burger King, Starbucks, or Auntie Anne's pretzels tor free, but they frequently would choose to pay me $5 for a pint of soup instead. Music is one universal language, it's true, but food is THE universal language! |

So good to see you, Vi! And I'm glad you're not having problems either. I'm not seeing prices rise by that amount, but I expect it to soon. |
