.
With the Post article in hand, Democrats pounced. "The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president, it should be helping us to produce smarter students," said Richard Gephardt, then the House Majority Leader. "And the president should be doing more about education than saying, 'Lights, camera, action.'"

Maybe this is why one of the educational activities suggested for the children were to make posters.  And you wonder why so many people including educators are worried about
propaganda.

" recently wrote a critique of the art community’s lack of dissent in the face of many controversial decisions made by the current administration. Entitled “The Artist Formerly Known as Dissident,” one of the key points argued in the article was the potential danger associated with the use of the art community as a tool of the state. Little did I know how quickly this concern would be elevated to an outright probability. "

---------------------------------------------------------------------

"Even more disturbing than learning that the White House and NEA are using the arts to address specific issues, is to learn what was discussed on this new conference call. Rosenbaum mentions that there was much talk of “leveraging federal dollars” to get artists and cultural organizations involved in social-service projects.

Leveraging federal dollars? This is the problem with marrying issue specific topics, like health care and energy, with a group that is funded by tax dollars; it increases the potential of taxpayer-funded propaganda"

WHO SET UP GOVERNMENT ‘PROPAGANDA’ CONFERENCE CALL? Newly Revealed White House, NEA Audio Contradict

by Patrick Courrielche

Another conference call has materialized, revealing a concerted effort by government to use the arts to address political issues.

Lee Rosenbaum, a blogger for Artsjournal.com, posted her experience with a meeting that occurred on August 27th and confessed that she also felt “uneasy” about the government’s arts effort.  The meeting invitation (viewable here) went out to all “member local, state, and regional arts agencies, community-based arts organizations, and national partners of Americans for Arts.” Americans for Arts is a non-profit arts organization that has received substantial grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.

JOHNSON

As with my conference call, the art group was invited to the meeting to work together to “tackle some of the nation’s toughest issues: education; health; energy and the environment; community renewal; and safety and security.” Also like my call, it included a private citizen moderating the phone call with key White House representatives participating. Kalpen Modi, Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, was to represent the White House and key representatives from the National Endowment for the Arts were also to participate.

Even more disturbing than learning that the White House and NEA are using the arts to address specific issues, is to learn what was discussed on this new conference call. Rosenbaum mentions that there was much talk of “leveraging federal dollars” to get artists and cultural organizations involved in social-service projects.

Leveraging federal dollars? This is the problem with marrying issue specific topics, like health care and energy, with a group that is funded by tax dollars; it increases the potential of taxpayer-funded propaganda.

As mentioned in the invitation, the NEA was to be on this phone call. However at the last minute, as Rosenbaum blogged, “Modi informed us that ‘unfortunately our colleagues from NEA and NEH [the National Endowment for the Humanities]’ were tied up in meetings and couldn’t participate, as had been planned.”

Could it have anything to do with the article I posted two days earlier? We can only guess but Rosenbaum also hopes that they might have been “having second thoughts about commandeering their constituents for this political adventure.”

What appears to be emerging is a concerted and deliberate effort by the White House and the NEA to encourage the art community to create issue specific art. This new conference call shows the same modus operandi, including a “third party” individual moderating the call to apparently distance the NEA and the White House from initiating the meeting.

The National Endowment for the Arts has yet to comment regarding their involvement with this effort, except for one small, but damaging, comment by their Communications Director Yosi Sergant.

When asked by Kerry Picket of the Washington Times about the NEA’s involvement in inviting artists to my conference call, Sergant said that “the NEA didn’t invite, we were a participant in a call, there was a third party that did the invitations.” When asked for a copy of the invitation, Sergant responded that the invitation “didn’t come from us…so I don’t have it…” He went on to state that Michael Skolnik was the “third party” and that the Corporation for National and Community Service was the party who set up the conference call. This dialogue can be heard here:

We’ve already proved there are two dishonest remarks in this statement from the NEA in a previous post, namely that the NEA did have the invite and they did send it out to the art community.

When the “Corporation” (referenced by Sergant) was asked by Josh Miller of Foxnews.com about my conference call, a representative stated that “the call was organized by an ‘individual interested’ in the group…”

Interesting. Because this same interested individual, Michael Skolnik, contradicts both of these federal agency’s statements in his opening remarks of the conference call I was on.

Skolnik states that it was the White House and the National Endowment for the Arts that asked him to bring together this independent art group. Skolnik’s statement can be heard here:

These obvious contradictions, as well as the documented dishonesty on the part of the National Endowment for the Arts, support a conclusion that the NEA may feel their involvement with this effort is outside of their mandate. George Will, Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper journalist, appears to agree with my conclusion. On this past Sunday’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, George Will referenced the NEA’s involvement in the conference call and stated, “I don’t know how many laws that breaks but I’m sure there are some.

With the building evidence of bad behavior by the NEA, you’d think this federal agency would have issued a statement explaining their position on this “brand new” direction for the arts. But as the cliché goes, the silence has been deafening. This taxpayer funded agency and their civil servants haven’t even returned phone calls from legitimate press outlets such as the Boston Globe, Foxnews.com, or the Washington Times.

Even more deafening is the silence on the part of the mainstream media. Documented dishonesty by White House appointed officials should easily draw the ire of our media watchdogs. But the liberal media, historically a protector of the arts, has turned its back on the community of which it adores. Like the Van Jones story, it appears that the blogosphere and conservative media are the only two forums that break news anymore. And the news that they break has dire consequences for those involved regardless of the mainstream media’s blind eye.

We need the National Endowment for the Arts to respond to these issues immediately. The NEA needs to issue a statement explaining the agency’s involvement in encouraging the art community to create art on issues being vehemently debated, contradictions made by their Communications Director, and lack of response to the inquiries of both the concerned public and press outlets.

As the former deputy chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Lynne Munson, stated in a recent post, during her tenure as deputy chairman “any action resembling this call would have triggered immediate dismissal.” I think we’ve shown action resembling this call.

Bad behavior must have consequences, or else that behavior becomes the norm. The actions of the National Endowment for the Arts are leaving the agency vulnerable to attacks on its credibility and rationale for existence.

The NEA needs to address this issue.

----------------------------------------------------------------

 Some Comments:

Excellent column. And the silence is deafening to say the least.

The main stream media should be ashamed of their behavior, they are miserable failures when it comes to reporting the truth.

This is yet an other government sponsored, tax payer financed "information operation" (otherwise know as propaganda) similar to the concerted US/UN IPCC Global Warming/Climate Change campaign, all of which have the stink of the "New World Order" Report

So did anybody's kids hear this in school today? I actually forgot to ask mine if they showed it in school today, before I dropped her off at softball practice. If they did, it must have not made an impact, because she didn't mention it, I will ask her when I pick her up from practice

No...The speech had been revised, wording changed, do to the uproar from School Districts, Educators and Parents.  We will never know what was in the original speech.

I thought President Obama's speech today was very good.  (Non political)

Our school didn't show it. Of course we started back to school 3 weeks ago too, so don't know if that had anything to do with the decision being made not to show it.

Mahshadin.... I think you need to be a little more forthcoming and honest here.

The hoopla was before the speech's content were revealed.  Given the facts of the above posts would you not be the slightest bit concerned.  It was not just about the speech.

It was about the materials/curriculum sent from the Federal Government/Presidential Aidees . The Packets of information, Posters, Activities, Book lists and suggested " I Pledge to be of service to our President" Video.  Also,  Not following protocol, Curriculum being sent to Principals of Schools directly instead of  the State School Boards and Districts. Unprecedented.  All combined...sent up red flags.

After the hoopla or uproar coming from diverse groups of Educated, Intelligent People, the Administration/ Presidential Aides admitted the wording was "unartfully" done.  Thus the original draft was reworded and revised  as well as some of the written material.

I love how the Left and the Media seem to leave these important facts out when reporting.
Making it just about the Speech which we did not have the text of  until yesterday.

I still would like to see the original first draft of the speech.

 Mary008.
Lots said. I do not know what your background is but where did you get your info. about how they are teaching teachers in college? We are taught in college to engage the students in hands-on lessons, field trips for science etc. However, once out in the "real" world we are restricted from doing this. Are restrictions are: No money-no field trips, thanks to NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND we have to show student accountabliity by testing, testing and more testing. How do we do this?  Well we say "take out your pencils... " Video taping of students or student portfolios can not be used. I can not blame all of this on NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND  because the community and parents are in on this too. They want and even demand paper proof that their children are learning. I am asked at the beginning of the year by parents. Are you sending homework home? What day of the week are you giving my child their spelling test? What is your turn around on grading and returning my child's papers home? ya, da, ya da, ya da,  Finally, I agree that our children need better food. Any suggestions how this can be done if no money is given to the school?

Mahshadin...

Please don't turn my posts into something they are not.

I have just posted the Facts.   Have you read my posts?  No Conspiracy Theory.

Ignoring the facts, doesn't change the facts.

I thought Obama's revised speech today was inspirational for our school children.  Does that make you feel better?

hi..  I'm very supportive of teachers.  :)  and you are right on... teaching to the test. :/

1st to address burn out....  every school should hire a Parent/Teacher Coordinator.

They have a computer with notes on the childs work and suggestions from the teacher.

That Coordinator can deal with the parents.   If they pay you a Doctor's salary... then you

can talk to all the parents... otherwise a meet and greet at the beginning of the year,

and Parent night are enough.... all in a social enjoyable context.   the Coordinator can

set up the special tutoring classes, get the progress reports out to parents, make appts

for talks with the principal,  alert parents to an outbreak of L. , warn that Little Morgan

New York students will have to settle for pizza without tasty turkey pepperoni topping. In

Maryland schools, tomato slices were pulled for a few weeks from cafeteria salads in favor

of less-expensive carrots or celery.

And in North Carolina, Yoo-hoo drinks, which had been taken off the shelf in favor of

healthier options, are back. Sure, officials would rather the kids chugged milk. But each

Yoo-hoo sale brings in 36 cents of profit.

Sharp rises in the cost of milk, grain and fresh fruits and vegetables are hitting cafeterias

across the country, forcing cash-strapped schools to raise prices or pinch pennies by s

serving more economical dishes. Some school officials on a mission to help fight childhood

obesity say it's becoming harder to fill students' plates with healthful, low-fat foods.

(here's a tip... never mind the milk, it has a lot of calories, if there is protein on the

menu, nix the dairy... give them bottled water)

Each year, Uncle Sam, in an effort to ensure the neediest children get healthful meals,

gives schools a little more cash to help feed students. But school officials nationwide say

the federal share hasn't kept pace with rising costs.

This year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is giving schools $2.47 per lunch to serve free

meals to children from the poorest families, up from $2.40 last year, a 3 percent increase.

In the same time, milk prices rose about 17 percent and bread nearly 12 percent.

The federal government provides $2.07 per meal for students eligible for a reduced-price

lunch and 23 cents a meal for students who pay full price. Schools also receive some foods,

including meat, cheese and canned goods, purchased by the federal government.

The average cost of preparing and serving a school lunch runs from about $2.70 to $3.10,

according to the School Nutrition Association.

A lot of info here...

Have a parent Teacher night... ask  them to fill out a hand out sheet.
questions like...  What foods would your child like to eat at school?
Do you think  many of the children skip breakfast?
Would you be willing to volunteer any of your time to help change the school's current
food menu?

Give a take home sheet with a print out of the below info-
..........................................................................................................
As well as talk about the info below... have a few Teachers talk on a topic they like on food from the sites below that the parents can take home and revisit when they have time.     And for eye candy... have a tray with a typical starchy  lunch... and a realistic yet healthy type lunch on a tray next to it.

My kid's school showed the speech. He thought it was cool that the President would do that, and I'm sure the memory of it will stay with him for a long time. He's eight though, and I guess his attention span didn't run as long as the speech as he couldn't remember much in the way of specifics. No surprises there.
After all the drama surrounding the speech I was a little worried about it's effect on him, but he still answers to his name and didn't wake up screaming in the night, so I guess we're okay... LOL

Update to my post on Sept 8, 2009 at 2:42 PM - Please review for this article.

Of course.... this Administration is not above using their influence to advance their policies and agenda. Right?

Lets see if you hear about this in the NY Times, CNN, NBC, ABC or other MSM media outlets.

Van Jones, Green Czar was to be a Big part of the festivities on 9/11 National Day of Service.

Did you hear anything about Van Jones in the MSM, NY Times, CNN, NBC, ABC etc...before his "resignation".  I think everyone should wonder why not.  It was a Big story.

-------------------------------------------
First Van Jones now Yosi Sergant

Glenn Beck has struck again.

Yosi Sergant, who recently popped up on Beck's radar for his involvement in a conference call on national service, has been asked to resign as communications director by the National Endowment for the Arts, sources familiar with the move tell the Huffington Post.

At issue was an August conference call in which the NEA encouraged select artists to participate in an administration project dubbed "United We Serve" and led by the first lady.

Beck attacked Sergant and the NEA on his Fox News talk show, accusing the agency of propaganda efforts similar to those used by Nazi Germany. And now Sergant has been tossed overboard, making him Beck's second victim in his campaign to rid the administration of perceived radicals, socialists, communists, fascists, anarchists and all other manner of nefarious influences.

Perhaps not coincidentally, both Sergant and Van Jones - Beck's first takedown - have roots in on-the-ground organizing and were tightly connected with the grassroots progressive community.

The NEA wouldn't comment on Sergant's situation specifically, saying that it was a confidential personnel matter.

The White House did not come to Sergant's defense but says it was not involved in asking him to leave. "The White House did not ask for Mr. Sergant's resignation," administration spokesman Shin Inouye told HuffPost.

But the NEA did provide this statement:

"On August tenth, the National Endowment for the Arts participated in a call with arts organizations to inform them of the president's call to national service. The White House office of public engagement also participated in the call, which provided information on how the Corporation for National and Community Service can assist groups interested in sponsoring service projects or having their members volunteer on other projects. This call was not a means to promote any legislative agenda and any suggestions to that end are simply false. The NEA regularly does outreach to various organizations to inform of the work we are doing and the resources available to them."

[UPDATE: The NEA adds this line to the statement: "As regards Yosi Sergant, he has not left the National Endowment for the Arts. He remains with the agency, although not as director of communications." Sources familiar with the situation say that the move represents a significant step down and was the result of the controversy. Discussion about his new duties is still ongoing.]

An artist on the call recorded it and gave the recording to Beck, who played it on air as proof of a government conspiracy to co-opt arts organizations and warp the minds of Americans. "Your government is trying to trick you, use your tax dollars to change your mind. It's called propaganda. The people involved in the conference call, including the White House, knew that this was on the fence if not outright illegal," says Beck.

Sergant has a long history with the Obama campaign, having led the media effort for Shepard Fairey, the artist behind the iconic "Hope" portrait that Obama has credited with helping him win. (See this L.A. Weekly profile to get a feel for Sergant.)

On Sept. 1, Beck came after Sergant. After claiming that Nazi propaganda was based on America's early 20th-century progressive movement, Beck says that the progressives are at it again.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is a public-private partnership created in 1993 with a mission similar to one Obama pressed during his campaign, during which he repeatedly promoted national and community service.

For Beck, however, the service promotion is a specter of totalitarianism and he interviewed an artist who said that he was uncomfortable working in coordination with the White House.

WATCH Videos associated with article by clicking the link at the top of the article.

The Washington Times editorial page also came after Sergant, asking if the NEA had invited artists to be on the conference call.

"The NEA didn't invite...We were a participant in a call. It was a third party that did the invitation," Sergant told the conservative page.

The Times published an invite that Sergant had sent out, saying it had caught him committing "official dishonesty." It's a nice gotcha, but would the Bush administration have cut such an aide loose?

Sergant didn't return a call and the NEA declined to comment further. Press officers with the Corporation for National and Community Service didn't immediately return calls.

Sergant is, by all accounts, a highly-talented grassroots organizer and promoter, but communications director for the NEA is a position that requires a high level of political dexterity: the arts agency is constantly under fire from extremist activists who see it as propagating a liberal, libertine agenda. The day the culture war is finally declared over, there will still be skirmishes over the NEA.

UPDATE: The initial story about Sergant and the NEA conference call first appeared on the conservative blog Big Hollywood, which is run by Andrew Breitbart, a friend and ally of Matt Drudge, who runs the Drudge Report. Breitbart first ran a blog post by the artist later interviewed by Beck.

ILLEGAL.  Listen to the Videos and Audio   And.... They knew that it was.

1.  the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is suppose to be apolitical in order to receive funds from the government,  it received 50 MILLION dollars from the stimulas package. Your TAX DOLLARS

2.   Using tax dollars to fund propaganda projects certainly borders on if not flat out ILEGAL
The NEA can lose its funding.

Look it up....In other words....using your tax dollars to pay for propaganda through the arts.

Are you joking ....that you do not understand this?  Please.

Official dishonesty from the National Endowment for the Arts

By Kerry Picket on Sept. 1, 2009 into Water Cooler

9/2/09 UPDATE: Video from Fox News Channel's Glenn Beck playing excerpts from the August 10th conference call

9/2/09 UPDATE: Transcript of phone interview added.

On a previous blog, the Washington Times Water Cooler reported that we contacted the National Endowment for the Arts's (NEA) Yosi Sergant about an August 10th conference call invitation sent out to artists and other creative influence peddlers.  When asked if the NEA sent the invitation, Mr. Sergant denied the NEA had sent the invitations to any participants for the conference call and refused to send the Washington Times a copy of the invite. AUDIO

OPERATOR: Kerry?

WASHINGTON TIMES: Yeah?

OPERATOR: You have Yosi Sergant in the communications office.

WASHINGTON TIMES : Okay.

YOSI SERGANT: Hello?

WASHINGTON TIMES: Hi, this is Kerry Picket.  I’m calling from the Washington Times Editorial page.

SERGANT: Hi, Kerry.  How are you?

WASHINGTON TIMES: Fine thank you.  Hey, I understand that there was a conference call on August 10th that the NEA invited producers, artists, marketers, etcetera.

SERGANT:  The NEA didn’t invite…We were a participant in a call.  It was a third party that did the invitation.

WASHINGTON TIMES: I see.  I was wondering If you could send me, if possible,  a copy of the invitation?

SERGANT: Umm…It didn’t come from us, so I don’t have it to distribute.  You’d go to them for that.

WASHINGTON TIMES: Uh-huh.  So who is the third party?

SERGANT – I believe it was Michael Skolnick.  This is something you should call the Corporation for National Service about.

WASHINGTON TIMES:  National Corporation of…I’m sorry?

SERGANT – The Corporation for National and Community Service.

WASHINGTON TIMES: Michael Skolnick?

SERGANT:  No, he’s a third party, but the Corporation who set up the conference call,  and who conducted the conference call is another federal agency.

WASHINGTON TIMES: Great.  Thank you.

Yet, Big Hollywood's Patrick Courrielche was invited to participate in the August 10th pow-wow, and he posted the email invite from Yosi Sergant yesterday on Andrew Breitbart's Big Hollywood's website:

It looks as if Mr. Sergant seems to be playing fast and loose with the truth. The Washington Times called Mr. Sergant three times today to comment on this invitation that Mr. Courrielche had received from Mr. Sergant's NEA email, but we have not received a response yet.  This blog will be updated should new information come in.

I think, from what he said in the conference call,he's checking with some Lawyers to see how legal what they are doing actually is.

lanie

This is getting to be a routine dodge with members of this administration: "It wasn't us, it was a third party which was responsible." Frankly, I'm already sick of the disingenuousness of it.

Des

I suppose this is what Obama meant by "transparent." The NEA is completely transparent when it comes to the level of sycophantic hero-worship of Obama among it's members.

Mnewman

and who can forget "no controlling legal authority..."

el_polacko

wow.. breitbart is breaking news ! good for him. i just want to echo 'lanie'... barack's m.o. since the beginning of his campaign has been to throw up his clean hands and blame that group of sycophants over there. it's tired, barack.

rbloodworth

good job, breitbart! Not only does this Yosi guy not know how to tell the truth, especially about something so easily verified, he doesn't know you don't end a sentence with a preposition. I guess the Obamatrons respect the Rules of Grammar as much as they respect the Rule of Law and the Constitution.

optionyout

Unbelieveably that only the conservative press covering this story. This country's media needs to wakeup. And there ought to be some serious inquires into how a nationally funded non-profit is pushing a partisan agenda. How the heck can they keep their charter?

Hold on, you need to stay on the subject and complete the proof for your last Conspiracy Theory before you try to change the subject.

Where are the 2 separate speeches you claim the President had, fess up or debunk your conspiracy theory. You know the Communist recruitment speech, lets see it

As I figured it was just another wild fantasy, and in the real world we call this a Lie. But hey perhaps you could email Mr. credibility (Beck) he might fabricate one for you.

Mahashadin.........Then Show me your facts that he has utter ONE lie.  PLEASE you are desperate.  You haven't shown me on fact
that my posts are wrong.

Why is it now Van Jones (Green Czar) has had to resign.  Yosi Sergant (NEA) is out of his job.  4 people have been fired from
ACORN possibly facing criminal charges.   ACORN will not be part of the CENSUS as a result of this recent scandal.  Lies?

Don't demean the messenger.  Following the extreme left Alinsky's rule book, are we?

Not one person Beck has brought to the attention of his viewers has filed any kind of lawsuit against him for libel.  Beck was previously on CNN and will tell you he's an independent and went after Bush just as hard and his adminstration. He also has the show footage and radio cd's to back up what he has said on Bush and how much he disagreed with him.  Funny....it was OK when he was on CNN against Bush and the right.  Because he hamms it up a litte at times while telling the facts does not make them not the truth.

I am sure Olbermann and Matthews are not entertainment?

Where are your facts that he has lied?

Since this has gotten off the topic of this thread Please respond to my posts with one fact that disputes them.

ACORN and the Census

June 26, 2009

Bookmark%20and%20Share < =text/ ="http://s7.add.com/js/250/add_widget.js?pub=xa-4a95703e019aeec6">

Q: Is ACORN providing workers for the 2010 census?

A: No. ACORN employees will not be taking the census. The group is one of more than 30,000 "partners" that will help publicize the event.

FULL QUESTION

Did the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) sign on as a "national partner" with the U.S. Census Bureau to sign up over 1 million temporary workers to help with the 2010 census?

FULL ANSWER

ACORN has indeed signed on to partner with the Census Bureau in connection with the 2010 census, along with about 30,000 other groups at the time of this writing. Others under "A" include, for example, the American Statistical Association, the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, Avon Products Inc. and 57 additional organizations and corporations. The Census Bureau’s Web site includes an open invitation to sign on, and the agency says it expects to have more than 100,000 partners by the time the process is over. That may even be an underestimate: In 2000, it signed up 140,000 partners.

We’ve received questions about ACORN’s activities in connection with the headcount ever since a Fox News story, headlined "ACORN to play role in 2010 census," appeared in March. As retold by and filtered through blogs and chain e-mails, the news left some people with the impression that ACORN, the liberal community organizing group whose voter registration activities became an issue in last year’s presidential campaign, would be a big player in running the census effort.

ACORN "will be in charge of going door-to-door and collecting data from the American public," said Rep. Michele Bachmann in mid-June. "This is very concerning." Saying she was worried about ACORN’s supposed involvement in gathering census data, the Minnesota Republican announced that she won’t participate in the census beyond answering how many individuals reside in her household, "because," she maintained, "the Constitution doesn’t require any information beyond that." Actually, the Constitution, under Article 1, Section 2, simply requires that an "enumeration" be done every 10 years to apportion the members of the House, but that it be done "in such manner" as Congress "shall by law direct." And Congress has seen fit to require everyone to answer truthfully whatever census questions they are asked, under threat of a $100 penalty for failure to answer and $500 for lying.

And Bachmann is flat wrong about ACORN going door-to-door and gathering data. Being "partners" with the Census Bureau doesn’t entail as close a relationship as one might think. For the most part it involves getting the word out that it’s important for everyone to participate in the decennial event that helps determine where federal money goes and how House of Representatives district boundaries are redrawn.

Each partner group is asked to complete a form listing a series of possible activities with which it would be willing to help. ACORN’s form is on page 48 of a package of documents that was turned over to the watchdog group Judicial Watch by the Census Bureau under the Freedom of Information Act. ACORN checked off, among other items, "identify job candidates and/or distribute and display recruiting materials" and "provide space to train new [census] employees." But government officials have made it clear that that’s a far cry from having ACORN hire workers and conduct the census. At a hearing on April 23 before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke responded to concerns about ACORN’s role voiced by a Republican senator:

Locke, April 23, 2009: [T]he Census will not be hiring anyone from ACORN. We use these so-called partners to get the word out and to spread the word about the need for people to respond and answer the questionnaires. …We control the hiring. We do not use any government funds to subcontract with any organization to do any activity. …We are not delegating anything to ACORN.

The Census Bureau documents given to Judicial Watch also indicate that in March, after the Fox News story on ACORN’s Census partnership was published, the agency was swamped with angry calls. This was its response:

Census Bureau statement, March 2009: Any charge of claim that a Census Bureau partner could influence or have direct input into census operations is baseless and inaccurate. The sole entity that will conduct the 2010 census is the U.S. Census Bureau, along with its hundreds of thousands of dedicated workers. Further, the Census Bureau has strict quality assurance procedures in every operation to prevent the introduction of errors and/or fraudulent information into the national count.

Census Bureau public affairs specialist Shelly Lowe elaborated on the hiring process in an interview with FactCheck.org, saying that "partners help us recruit by promoting the fact that we’re hiring," but they have no say in the actual hiring. The agency will need a whopping 1.2 million temporary workers to go door-to-door, Lowe said, but it isn’t hiring everyone who walks in. "There’s a test, an FBI background check and a fingerprint check" that every applicant must go through, Lowe said. "We look for language skills, and we need people in every community."

And just as not every job applicant is hired, not every group that wants to be a partner is accepted. On page 47 of the Judicial Watch materials, an internal agency e-mail sets out some of the types of groups that would be rejected, such as hate groups and law enforcement, anti-immigrant or other groups that might cause some people to be afraid to participate.

ACORN Critics

Why all the attention to this community organizing outfit? ACORN has been a frequent target of conservative talk show hosts, including Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, since last fall, when Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign accused the group of "massive voter fraud" and claimed that Obama had "long and deep ties" to the group. We found the voter fraud claim to be false – although some canvassers from the group had been found guilty of or investigated for voter registration fraud – and the one about Obama’s involvement to be overstated, although he has had more contact with the group than he originally let on. Nevertheless, the allegations are still floating around the blogosphere and talk shows, where ACORN is being described as a criminal enterprise that sends partisans to the polls to vote multiple times using the names of people long dead. We’ve continued to monitor the various cases against and investigations of ACORN workers, and so far there’s been no evidence that fraudulent votes were cast as a result of anything they did. ACORN describes and defends its voter registration work on its Web site.

The latest legal developments we’re aware of concerning ACORN are in Nevada and Pennsylvania. In Nevada, ACORN itself as well as the group’s former Las Vegas field director and its regional director for voter registration were charged in May with multiple counts of compensating individuals for registering voters. This appears to be the first time the organization itself has been criminally charged in connection with voter registration. The problem, according to the state attorney general, is that it’s illegal in Nevada for someone to be paid based on the number of voters he or she registers; the attorney general said that ACORN used both a quota system to keep or fire workers and a bonus system that rewarded employees further for registering more than 20 voters in a day. State officials said that the alleged practices resulted in thousands of "garbage" registrations on the voter rolls, including the starting lineup of the Dallas Cowboys.

A spokesman for the group said then that the bonus system was "in violation of ACORN’s national policies" and that canvassers didn’t have to meet a strict quota. Bertha Lewis, ACORN’s CEO, said at the time that the charges were "trumped up" and "outrageous," and that she was confident the group would be acquitted.

Also in May, the district attorney of Allegheny County, Pa., charged seven ACORN workers with forgery and violating election law by filing hundreds of bogus voter registration forms last year. That investigation is continuing, the D.A. said. There have been no accusations in either Pennsylvania or Nevada that ACORN or its workers are connected with any instances of voters casting, or attempting to cast, ballots illegally.

We’ve also received some non-ACORN-related questions about the census, having to do with allegations that the White House plans to interfere with the process. When Obama nominated Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire to be secretary of commerce in February, some groups complained that he was no friend of the Census Bureau, having resisted an increase in its funding in the 1990s. Those objections prompted assurances from the administration that senior White House aides would oversee the agency. But those assurances in turn triggered Republican cries that the White House was trying to politicize the census-taking process. Gregg withdrew as a nominee, citing the census as one of his concerns, though the administration had clarified that it didn’t intend to run the headcount out of the White House. It said it would simply work with the agency’s director, a practice for which there is ample precedent. In March, White House spokesman Ben LaBolt said:

White House spokesman Ben LaBolt, March 2009: The president wants to ensure that the census conducts a fair and accurate count. … The census director will report to the Commerce secretary. Like in every census under Democratic or Republican administrations there will be interest in Congress and at the White House in this national priority.

Census spokeswoman Lowe further told us that the White House "has not proposed any organizational change. Given the scope and scale of the operation, in any census there is additional interest on behalf of the White House, as well as status updates, participation in promotional events, etc. The Census Bureau remains under the umbrella of the Department of Commerce."

Mahshadin, you are FAR, far from anywhere near middle. I agree with you regarding the conspiracy theories that flow from the mouths of loads of these idiots, but to label yourself anywhere near the middle is simply funny. I knew that about you the moment you said "Teabaggers" and "Proofers."

Didn't you notice that Keith Olberman, the voice of the left and all twelve people that actually watch MSNBC, is trying desperately to dig up dirt, any kind of possible dirt on Glenn Beck? Yes Glenn tends to go full moonbat a little too often for my tastes, but that doesn't change the fact that on far too many issues he is dead on. I'm glad he was there to expose that communist idiot "Czar." I want him to continue to hit Barak Obama where it hurts most: His near absolute corruption.

Regarding ACORN,  I don't think this story except the firings of employees has been covered in most of the Main Stream Media. Your newspaper may be one of them.  Maybe a tiny small article, if that.  Google it if you doubt my word.

Please read the current letter announcing this decision.   Why would Director Robert Groves of the Census Bureau need to write this letter if their were no ties?

"To that end, and in keeping with the standards we shared with your organization and others who volunteered to partner with the Census Bureau to help promote the 2010 Census, we are today terminating our Partnership Agreement with ACORN."

Watching football and Tennis myself....Go Cardinals !!!

Read U.S. Census Bureau Director Robert Groves’ letter announcing the decision to sever ties with ACORN below.

September 11, 2009

Ms. Maude Hurd

President

ACORN

739 8th St SE

Washington, DC 20003

Dear Ms. Hurd:

The goal of the U.S. Census Bureau's partnership program is to combine the strengths of state, local, and tribal governments, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, schools, media, businesses and others to ensure an accurate 2010 Census. While not (sic) Census bureau employees, partners are advocates for census cooperation and participation. They serve a trusted voices within their communities and are critical to our strategy to count everyone once, only once, and in the right place.

The Census Bureau has established criteria for partnerships, which are listed on our Web site at <www.census.gov >, and reserves the right to decline partnership or to terminate an existing partnership agreement with any group that 1) may create a negative connotation for the Census Bureau; 2) could distract from the Census Bureau's mission; or, 3) may make people fearful of participating in the census.

To that end, and in keeping with the standards we shared with your organization and others who volunteered to partner with the Census Bureau to help promote the 2010 Census, we are today terminating our Partnership Agreement with ACORN.

Over the last several months, through ongoing communication with our regional offices, it is clear that ACORN's affiliation with the 2010 Census promotion has caused sufficient concern in the general public, has indeed become a distraction from our mission, and may even become a discouragement to public cooperation, negatively impacting 2010 Census efforts.

While not decisive factors in this decision, recent events concerning several local offices of ACORN have added to the worsening negative perceptions of ACORN and its affiliation with our partnership efforts.

We do not come to this decision lightly. It was our original assessment that your organization could be helpful in encouraging cooperation with the 2010 Census among individuals who are historically hard to count, including renters, low-income residents, the linguistically isolated, and others. As of today, we have close to 80,000 partnership agreements with national and local groups - many of whom are trusted voices and serve these same populations - and we will be relying upon those groups to continue our outreach in the communities you serve. The full participation of those populations remains of utmost importance to us.

Unfortunately, we no longer have confidence that our national partnership agreement is being effectively managed through your many local offices. For the reasons stated, we therefore have decided to terminate the partnership.

Respectfully,

Robert M. Groves

Director

The Main Stream Media are not covering some important stories.  Unbelieveable considering it is our tax dollars. the history of ACORN  and that millions of dollars are being abused.   Why isn't this being focused on by the MSM ? Who is telling the networks, cable and print newspapers to ignore these stories?  Van Jones?  NEA?  (2 Million given to NEA )?  are just a few of the stories
I know I have not seen these stories on my local TV stations or in my local newspaper.
Except on Fox.

ACORN Story Grows But Mainstream Media Refuse to Cover It

This story has everything you could ever want – corruption, sleazy actions at tax-funded organizations, firings, government ties, sex, hookers. It is a network news director’s dream. Imagine the ratings. But almost no one is covering it.
