Nine more dead birds found in Okhla sanctuary
New Delhi, February 7: "NINE MORE carcasses of birds have been recovered from the Okhla Bird Sanctuary, four days after 47 were found on Saturday, and bird-watchers say the numbers could be more. While Wildlife Department officials rule out an outbreak of bird flu, they are yet to give a definite cause of death but suspect that chemical sludge in the Yamuna may have a role to play. Some of the carcasses had been sent to a Bhopal laboratory for bird flu testing and to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Hyderabad for toxicology tests to determine the cause of death." ‘Undigested fish were found in the bodies of some of the birds. So it is not the result of an illness but something very sudden,’’ says Jose Louies of Wildlife SOS. Divisional Forest Officer K.K. Singh said the results are not out , but initial investigations point to the highly polluted Yamuna water as the cause.‘‘The river was stinking when we went there. Carcasses of a donkey and a dog were also lying on the banks. Even untreated waste was scattered around,’’ he said. http://www.afrol.com/ articles/18006 Edited by Rick |
