Well, it's July already! Summer is in full swing! So what is everyone working on?

I have been restocking my pantry and freezer over the past couple of months, both are stocked full. I just have felt an urgency to get things stocked up again with the economy the way it is. I have been hitting sales, using lots of coupons and getting things super cheap. At least I know my family will be able to eat and have other items on hand that we need for an extended period of time if anything should go crazy with the economy.

Well, we bought a new and large refrigerator. The one we had is way toooo small(came with the foreclosed house we bought) ice maker doesn't work, nor does it cool evenly...it is either to warm or freezes. Anyway, with a new frig I can fill up the frig with MORE food finally and meats in the freezer.
Going to buy another propane tank. $50! It's a lot of money but we only have 1 right now. I need a back up...I should get 2 but I need a lot of other things like more water and food.
We saw a nice cooler at Sam's club for only $29.99...not too large or too small and we could drag it. It would be a good "bug out" cooler. When we moved from Ohio to Florida we sold everything so we are starting over down here. Sam's also has a nice tent...about $70 that holds up to 8 people. There are 4 of us and the dog so that would work out along with some of our "bug out" bags, food, supplies, etc. if we had to camp out somewhere. We should get 3 more sleeping bags. We only have 1. We had one other but got eaten up by mice in Ohio. I had it in the pole barn. Big mistake.
I think prepping is a constant thing and sort of a life style...always making sure we resupply what we use up and try to add to that as well.
It doesn't get really cold here in southwest Florida...but I still wouldn't mind a small woodstove. I know how crazy the weather has been all over the world and who knows if that cold dips deep enough south that we could use it and it would be nice to cook on if thepower were to go if it got cold. But maybe I'm getting tooo "overly" prepared with that one. I don't know. lol :)

Hello all, garden is in full swing 10+ zuch's on the vines. I found a local LDS cannery about an hour a way. I called them and the lady was super sweet. they are open one day a week, non church members are welcome, prices are half of honeyville's. I have been wanting to build a storage of long term (most is 30 yr shelf life). you buy the food in bulk there, can it yourself there. So I plan on investing maybe $50 every 2 weeks, starting with wheat , in a couple weeks.  My short term (1-3 years shelf life)  will continue to be a stocked pantry with home dehydrated and canned goods.                 Yes, i have been wanting a wood stove also but have been trying to decide if the money would be better spent paying on deb, I will decide by Oct. I think that with the whole 2012 hype getting closer that prices will go up as more people prep. I am more concerned about financial decline and inflation, and pandemics.

Hi. R u in Florida? Do you think every state has a lDS cannery? My neighbor in Ohio was a mormon with LDS but I don't recall her telling me about any cannery. She bought from Honeyville too so that would be nice to know if it is 1/2 off for same thing. LMK. Thanks.

I would bet that LDS has a cannery in every major city where they have LDS churches. Denver has one. Contact any LDS church and they will be happy to tell you where a cannery is located in your area.

Most LDS members do not talk about the canneries because most people think it is strange to prep. We are unusual people here on this Fourm.

Thanks. As I mentioned before my neighbor back in Ohio was mormon and I learned a lot from her. She has now passed (may she rest in peace) and we moved to Florida.
I don't have a green thumb unfortunately or I'd plant a garden. I have a tomato plant and a green pepper plant. It takes everything I have to keep them alive...especially now with the heat. I have to bring them into the patio before noon or the sun will burn them. Then I have to worry about rabbits and who knows what else when I let them out of the patio lol :) In Ohio we did OK with the tomatoes and green peppers in the summer...but not with much else. Seems like bugs or something would get into it...even with sprays, fences, etc...I don't know how everyone else including farmers do it lol :)

Hey Flu Mom,

Did you know that there is an LDS cannery near you?  Another one in Colo. Spgs.

It is at 3233 Fraser St in Aurora. It's between 10th and 8th streets west of Champers road. Their # is 303-371-7650.

Melody, sorry no Im not in Florida. Go to providentliving.org for a list of locations; the prices are listed on an "order list" I think the price that I was quoted on the phone was a little bit more, but less than a dollar more and still 1/2 price when I compared it to Honeyvilles prices. The location closest to me has a somewhat limited selection, only dairy being milk. So eggs, cheese and butter #10 cans would be best bought from Honeyville. Yes I was surpised @ the lower prices. I did ask if they had seen an increase in business the manager said "Yes" around Febuary-March, she suspected when income tax returns were being sent. You could also buy large bags of bulk like, wheat and oats, the prices were alot cheaper than in the store- not in the #10 cans. I thought of doing a 5gallon bucket in a mylar bag with 02 absorbers for bulk products. Best wishes. HoosierMom

Yep, Elver, I know the one in Aurora. Thanks for the suggestion. I have a very good friend who goes to that one. She said the potato pearls were really super good. Have to try those.

I never used the cannery because I purchase all my stuff from Walton Foods and places like that. I am now going through all my supplies right now. I had a leak in my basement, small but had to get some wall board put up and replace some ceiling tiles. So now I am getting my supplies organized again.

Getting rid of really old can goods from the grocery store. Not going to replace much of it because there are only two of us and we don't use can goods. I cook most everything fresh. I do purchse can chicken and tuna use those things.

Keep prepping something will happen one of these days.

I have a question. I bought the large lemonade powder from Sam's Club. I opened it 2 months ago and just today decided to make lemonade again BUT there were tiny dead bugs in it! I am thinking I should have put it in the freezer. Anyone know what went wrong? I just opened a new powder can of Kool-Aid from Sam's club and it was fine for now but I decided to put in freezer so as not to get bugs. Anyone know if this will help? I know in the past I used to put my flour in the freezer for a few days to kill any eggs I guess...my mormon neighbor told me to do this and it worked so I'm guessing it is the same for any powder? I just put my potato flakes in freezer too. What do you all know about this. ThanksSmile

Melody, Yes please do, dont make my mistake ! I couldnt see them with the naked eye. I poured about 3 cups of rice in a colored bowl, sifted it around, the bugs were almost transparent and stuck to the bowl sides. I did find a few smaller bags that didnt have any, (white rice) this was some of my oldest preps, I froze it and repackaged it for my dog. I will mix a little cooked rice in an emergency to add to her diet. I will toss it in another year.

Bugs grosse me out. My new frig came the other day so now I have more room and I can put the stuff in my freezer. Going to do that right now before I forget :) Thanks again.

Just thought I'd mention that I have opened an experimental jar of 5 year old dehydrated tomatoes.  These were dehydrated, placed in quart canning jars and vacuum sealed. I use canning jars as they are continuously recyclable from canning back to dehydration and so on.  The seal was still good and so were the tomatoes.  They were stored in about 65 - 75 degrees in a dark pantry.  I have always wondered how dehydrating would hold up against the freeze drying process which cant be accomplished properly without one of those expensive vacuum/.freezing/sublimation type machines--(obviously these work better long term).  I've used these machines in labs where the same technology is used for dehydrating medical samples and all.  Anyway, I thought this (my tomatoes) were a great promotion for what many of you are doing with food storage ideas involving dehydration of all of the great garden produce and worth mentioning.  I use this same simple technique for dried rice beans corn etc--keeps the bugs out because bugs don't breathe well in a vacuum--also you can do the deep freeze thing of course to kill them before you vacuum seal them.  So far I have never had a bug get in--or out. :)  Zucchini is alive and well in my garden but we have had a plague of locust which tried to eat everything else--fought them for days with all kinds of natural bug remedies--(they don't like garlic but that didn't stop them from trying to take out everything else).  If anyone has any ideas on grasshopper protection other than frying them up and eating them--please let me know.  Thanks!

I have had a plague of tomato worms this year. I have planted 36 tomato plants and pick worms off them every day.  I ordered some Bacillus T and am hoping that will help. One little worm eats a whole leaf!  The heirlooms are getting the worst of it but the hybrids are affected to.

The sun here in FL keeps burning my tomato plant. I have a lot to learn. I bring it into the patio so the sun does'nt hit it directly then take it out if rain comes. My mom says rain is better than tap water. So I'm dragging this plant in and out of the patio. It's silly. It's really not producing much during summer so far...2 tiny tomatoes...earlier it did better in spring. My green pepper plant is doing pretty good though.

She's probably taking a vacation after the 1,000's of postings.  My only objection to her posting that much is that other important topics keep floating downwards due to the sheer number of the topics she posted.  I quit another BF forum for that very reason.  It is no fun when one person dominates 99.9% of the forum.

MelodyAtHome, in Fla you will notice many fields are "covered" it is a green type cover that you can put over your garden also. You do it like you said so you don't get your plants burned in the hot summer Fla sun. The cover is very light, look for it in garden catalogs.

Fla is a real different growing area since it is so hot, buggy and sand not soil. You will get the hang of it!

Got my first tomato it was wonderful. I have tons on my vines and I am sure they will ripen all at once...why I have my dehydrator.

SmileWell, I don't have a garden yet. Just 1 tomato plant and 1 green pepper plant. With my health issues I can't dig a garden and my husband has enough to do with work, cutting grass and fixing up this house. So I was trying my hand at potted plants...well, just the 2 for now.
Thanks for the advice about the cover. That would be an option for a garden if I had one. If I can keep the plants alive until NOvember I think I will do much better in the winter here.
Thank again flumom .

I live in south MS and in early March as soon as seedlings started selling I bought about 20 tomato plants. I potted them in gallon pots and sat them all along the south facing brick wall of my house. We did not have a hard freeze so I never had to move them until it was time to plant them. I kept buying and maybe had 40 total. In early May they had huge green tomatoes that took their time getting ripe. Them I had several hundred ripe tomatoes. Now I have none. Some plants are still green at the tips and there are a few the size of large marbles but it is raining so much they go bad while they are getting ripe. It's so hot I have given up. The really sad part is I was so busy with another crop I did not have time to process any. We pigged out and gave them away.

I am so jealous that you had tomatoes, Suzi! I have all kinds of recipes standing by waiting for my crop to ripen.  I have a ton of green tomatoes as well.  We live in Ca. and have had a very cool spring.  The thing is, I started these plants on my dining room table in March! I guess next year I will have to start in January!

Rice keeps a really long time. It will keep long years longer than a use by date and even longer if you vacume seal it and keep it cool. It does have a pest. Tiny little weevil you can barely see. You can easily see the sand like mess at the bottom of the bag.

I have rice that came in a plastic concealer. It is 3 years old. I'm wondering if I should throw i out. I don't see anything unusual at the bottom like bugs or anything. They would move right? ...if they were bugs? Either way, I don't see anything but rice. Hmmm. Don't know what to do.

3 years is ok. Is it discolored? Storage temp affects the time it will be good. My vacume packed bags look the best. Really look just like they did when I did them. I wrote the exp date on some, 2010. I probably did them in 07. I would not throw it away now even if I thought it was a little discolored. Buy some more for yourself and keep the old to give away. Hungry people will not know the difference. This debt ceilling thing has me nervous. I bought 25 dollars worth of seed yesterday. The guy was scraping the bin on the zipper cream peas. I got two kinds of peas, green beans, okra and zukuni. He said they would not get any more seed until next spring. If things are not sounding good Tues I am going back for some corn.

I looked at my rice again and it looks perfect. It has an expiration date of 7 of 2010. I'll keep it to give away. Not discolored or anything. I bought a big bag of rice and put in freezer for myself. I wonder how long I should keep it in there? When I take it out I'll put it in Rubbermaid containers.
So much to do :)

Are you putting it into the freezer to kill any bugs that might be in it? If so a day or two should do it. Be sure to let it get to room temp before storing. Condensation will collect on it while it is cold.

Well, I was always told to freeze my flour for a week to kill any bugs/eggs that MIGHT be in it so I figured I'd do the same for the flour. Thanks for reminding me about the condensation. I've had it in there a week so I should take it out so I have room for other stuff :) Thanks.Smile
