So is the M6.2 quake related to the Taiwan M7,4 quake ? One aftershock of M6,4-lots of M5,7...

There was a tsunami warning but that already is lifted...

Summary

  • - Four people died and another 97 sustained injuries after a magnitude-7.3 earthquake hit Hualien, China's Taiwan region on Wednesday morning, local media reported

    - The quake jolted the sea area near Hualien at 7:58 a.m. with a depth of 12 kilometers, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

DJ, sometimes earthquakes, disasters end up improving relations...Türkiye and Syria did see some coordination..In Syria the NATO backed terrorists held area was hit very hard...complicating aid...

The US is "pushing" for a break up of China...supporting groups in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet, Uyghurs...There are US special forces training the Taiwan "army" on Taiwan controlled islands close to mainland China.

Very likely damage may be limited-nuclear reactors not at risk https://www.nusc.gov.tw/english/Nuclear-Reactor-Safety/Nuclear-Power-Plants-in-Taiwan-269.html#:~:text=The%20three%20nuclear%20power%20plants,Maanshan%20NPP%20is%20still%20operating. or https://www.nusc.gov.tw/english/Nuclear-Reactor-Safety/Nuclear-Power-Plants-in-Taiwan-269.html#:~:text=The%20three%20nuclear%20power%20plants,Maanshan%20NPP%20is%20still%20operating.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_earthquakes#Largest_earthquakes_by_magnitude or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_earthquakes#Largest_earthquakes_by_magnitude There may have been several M9+ earthquakes in history-most but not all-in the Pacific "ring of fire"...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Valdivia_earthquake# or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Valdivia_earthquake# ;

The 1960 Valdivia earthquake and tsunami (Spanish: Terremoto de Valdivia) or the Great Chilean earthquake (Gran terremoto de Chile) on 22 May 1960 was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded. Various studies have placed it at 9.4–9.6 on the moment magnitude scale.[1] It occurred in the afternoon (19:11 GMT, 15:11 local time), and lasted for approximately 10 minutes. The resulting tsunamis affected southern ChileHawaiiJapan, the Philippines, eastern New Zealand, southeast Australia, and the Aleutian Islands.

DJ, Can the Taiwan quake result in an even larger quake in the West Pacific.....?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_scale or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_scale ;

Seismologist Susan Hough has suggested that a magnitude 10 quake may represent a very approximate upper limit for what the Earth's tectonic zones are capable of, which would be the result of the largest known continuous belt of faults rupturing together (along the Pacific coast of the Americas).[17]

 A research at the Tohoku University in Japan found that a magnitude 10 earthquake was theoretically possible if a combined 3,000 kilometres (1,900 mi) of faults from the Japan Trench to the Kuril–Kamchatka Trench ruptured together and moved by 60 metres (200 ft) (or if a similar large-scale rupture occurred elsewhere).

Such an earthquake would cause ground motions for up to an hour, with tsunamis hitting shores while the ground is still shaking, and if this kind of earthquake occurred, it would probably be a 1-in-10,000-year event.[18]

DJ, It is impossible to be prepared to be for "once-in a 10,000 years" events...It may be even hard to get a realistic view on that kind of events...

DJ Flu on Taiwan may be at epidemic level...

Very likely land slides, infrastructure damage...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_Taiwan or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_Taiwan in 1999 a M7.7 hit Taiwan...Taiwan is prepared for this kind of seismic activity...so risks may be limited...

-No nuclear risks

-Healthcare still functioning

-Since there was also the M6,2 https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000m9bq/executive or https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000m9bq/executive Saipan quake before the M7.3/M7.5 quake in Taiwan there could be another major quake in the NW Pacific area....There "may be potential" for a "very major"M9+ quake...Time will tell...

DJ A follow-up quake after the M7+ quake in Taiwan ?

-Taiwan/China quake killed 10, lots of people missing

-Taiwan refusing help from PRC, accepting aid from EU, US, Japan...

Maybe another note-the Taiwan quake shows preparations do limit damage...It may never be perfect...Lots of missing may be hit by landslides in a mountain-nature reserve...

In the past I did discuss/question the maximum for earthquakes...Maybe M9+ quakes may be "expected" every 10-15 years ? Climate collapse means less landice pushing down land in Antarctica, Greenland, Canada...does mean seismic risks are increasing...

The Hal Turner/In2thinair "crazy wave" could be explained by a massive methane release...only I would not expect that in Antarctica that much...A glacier-collapse also could cause "crazy waves"...

Seismologists anticipated a very large quake would strike in the same place as the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake—in the Sagami Trough, southwest of Tokyo.[389][390] The Japanese government had tracked plate movements since 1976 in preparation for the so-called Tokai earthquake, predicted to take place in that region.[391]

 However, occurring as it did 373 km (232 mi) north east of Tokyo, the Tōhoku earthquake came as a surprise to seismologists.

While the Japan Trench was known for creating large quakes, it had not been expected to generate quakes above an 8.0 magnitude.[390][391]

 The Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion set up by the Japanese government then reassessed the long-term risk of trench-type earthquakes around Japan, and it was announced in November 2011 that research on the 869 Sanriku earthquake indicated that a similar earthquake with a magnitude of Mw 8.4–9.0 would take place off the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan, on average, every 600 years.

Also, a tsunami-earthquake with a tsunami magnitude scales (Mt) between 8.6 and 9.0 (Similar to the 1896 Sanriku earthquake, the Mt for the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake was 9.1–9.4) had a 30% chance to occur within 30 years

DJ The march 11-2011 M9/M9.1 earthquake in Japan was NOT expected...with very good seismologists doing the best research...We simply can NOT know all there is to know...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_historical_earthquakes# or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_historical_earthquakes# is a list of earthquakes with estimated magnitudes before 1900...only very few M9+ earthquakes in those -science based-estimates....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_20th-century_earthquakes#List_of_largest_earthquakes_by_magnitude or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_20th-century_earthquakes#List_of_largest_earthquakes_by_magnitude has THREE ! M9/M9+ quakes...with very likely underestimating earthquakes first half of 20th century...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_21st-century_earthquakes#List_of_largest_earthquakes_by_magnitude or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_21st-century_earthquakes#List_of_largest_earthquakes_by_magnitude has already TWO M9/M9+ earthquakes...

So https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1952_Severo-Kurilsk_earthquake or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1952_Severo-Kurilsk_earthquake to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_T%C5%8Dhoku_earthquake_and_tsunami or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_T%C5%8Dhoku_earthquake_and_tsunami -within 60 years FIVE M9 earthquakes...(1952-2011).

My point-we tend to underestimate risks...maybe to protect ourselves ? But is "looking away" the right choice ?

I think we have to face M9+ quakes should be expected once every 10-to-20 years...We even know the Pacific "ring-of-fire" runs the highest risks...

SO...Why are we NOT preparing -likely enough- for such a larger quake ?

Why do we "need to believe" M9.5/M9.6 may the maximum magnitude ?

Geologists estimate that the largest possible earthquakes could have magnitudes of 10 to 11, most likely caused by a combined rupture of the Japan Trench and Kuril-Kamchatka Trench, or individually the Aleutian Trench or Peru–Chile Trench. Another possible area could be the Lesser Antilles subduction zone.

link; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megathrust_earthquake or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megathrust_earthquake ;

Megathrust earthquakes occur at convergent plate boundaries, where one tectonic plate is forced underneath another. The earthquakes are caused by slip along the thrust fault that forms the contact between the two plates. These interplate earthquakes are the planet's most powerful, with moment magnitudes (Mw) that can exceed 9.0.[1][2] Since 1900, all earthquakes of magnitude 9.0 or greater have been megathrust earthquakes.[3]

The thrust faults responsible for megathrust earthquakes often lie at the bottom of oceanic trenches; in such cases, the earthquakes can abruptly displace the sea floor over a large area. As a result, megathrust earthquakes often generate tsunamis that are considerably more destructive than the earthquakes themselves. Teletsunamis can cross ocean basins to devastate areas far from the original earthquake.

The term megathrust refers to an extremely large thrust fault, typically formed at the plate interface along a subduction zone, such as the Sunda megathrust.[4][5] However, the term is also occasionally applied to large thrust faults in continental collision zones, such as the Himalayan megathrust.[6] A megathrust fault can be 1,000 kilometers (600 mi) long.[7]

Cross-sectional illustration of normal and reverse faults

A thrust fault is a type of reverse fault, in which the rock above the fault is displaced upwards relative to the rock below the fault. This distinguishes reverse faults from normal faults, where the rock above the fault is displaced downwards, or strike-slip faults, where the rock on one side of the fault is displaced horizontally with respect to the other side.

DJ, It may be in human nature to believe risks are limited-for human survival this way of underestimating risks may be unwise.

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megathrust_earthquake#Occurrence_and_characteristics or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megathrust_earthquake#Occurrence_and_characteristics ;

In the Himalayan region, where the Indian tectonic plate subducts under the Eurasian Plate, the largest recorded earthquake was the 1950 Assam–Tibet earthquake, at magnitude 8.7. It is estimated that earthquakes with magnitude 9.0 or larger are expected to occur at an interval of every 800 years, with the highest boundary being a magnitude 10, though this is not considered physically possible. Therefore, the largest possible earthquake in the region is a magnitude 9.7, assuming a single rupture of the whole Himalayan arc and assuming standard scaling law, which implies an average slip of 50 m.[21]

A megathrust earthquake could occur in the Lesser Antilles subduction zone, with a maximum magnitude of 9.3, or potentially even 10.3 through recent evaluations, a value not considered impossible.[22]

The largest recorded megathrust earthquake was the 1960 Valdivia earthquake, estimated magnitude 9.5, centered off the coast of Chile along the Peru-Chile Trench, where the Nazca Plate subducts under the South American Plate.[23] This megathrust region has regularly generated extremely large earthquakes.

Geologists estimate that the largest possible earthquakes could have magnitudes of 10 to 11, most likely caused by a combined rupture of the Japan Trench and Kuril-Kamchatka Trench, or individually the Aleutian Trench or Peru–Chile Trench.[24][25][26] Another possible area could be the Lesser Antilles subduction zone.[22]

A study reported in 2016 found that the largest megathrust quakes are associated with downgoing slabs with the shallowest dip, so-called flat slab subduction.[27]

DJ, the largest know earthquakes in Europe the last 2,000 years very likely stayed under magnitude 7...However could an earthquake of M9,7-Himalaya, 10,3 Lesser Antilles or even M11 East Asia result in seismic events in Europe M7+ ?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_scale or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_scale

M9-M9.9 supposed to be 1 to 3 times per 100 years;

Near total destruction – severe damage or collapse to all buildings. Heavy damage and shaking extend to distant locations. Permanent changes in ground topography.

-

DJ...there are technical/tectonic limits...very likely...So M11+ may only be possible with an asteroide hitting Earth https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicxulub_crater#Effects or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicxulub_crater#Effects (in this story estimated M9 to M11....https://www.quora.com/Is-it-true-that-the-magnitude-11-13-Chicxulub-earthquake-was-able-to-sink-the-continental-surface or https://www.quora.com/Is-it-true-that-the-magnitude-11-13-Chicxulub-earthquake-was-able-to-sink-the-continental-surface ...

My idea of an M11 quake-effect would be parts of land sinking into the Ocean-with new land/Ocean floor rising up...Tsunami's going all over the planet, also affecting polar ice etc. Mountains collapsing-rivers flowing in new directions...

The Taiwan M7,4 quake showed we may be able to prepare for up to M8 quakes quite well...Building codes could see very limited collapse of houses. Deaths may be of landslides in area's less protected...Very likely "risk management" could limit damage further to be able to deal with even M8,5-M9 quakes...

Here in NL dykes are supposed to deal with flood-risk than are supposed to show once in 25,000 years...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
