surgical masks will ofer you no protection at all ! just so you know.
You need N100 respirator equal to european standard FFP3D, if you want to get some protection from virusses.
Surgical face masks can be worn by infected people to prevent spread to others only.

N95 masks are fine. No need to buy N100s.

You are quite correct.
N-95 masks filter down to .3 micron. Even though this virus is only .01-.03 in size it travels on vapour droplets that are considerably bigger than .3 micron. N-95 and P2 masks effectively filter these vapour droplets.
However, all masks have a weakness. They are susceptible to moisture intrusion and must be changed regularly.
When we breathe our exhalation contains an amount of water vapour. Over time, this builds up on the interior surface of the mask and compromises the ability of the mask to filter particles. Viruses need a carrier, in other words they usually do not float around as free agents. Most commonly, they travel on vapour droplets, expelled when we sneeze or cough.
The outer surface of an N-95 or P2 captures the vapour droplet, limiting the viruses ability to penetrate the mask. However, when the mask has moisture present on the inside, it draws moisture in from the outside and can potentially draw the virus through the mask.
Regardless of which mask you choose, the golden rule is.......
CHANGE YOUR MASK OFTEN.

Can you prolong the use of a mask by using a surgical mask or bandana over or under the mask?
I realize they really should be a one time use product...BUT, if you are running low and must go out, are there steps to take and give it a little extra life?

Hi Kristikaylene
There is no way of prolonging the life of a respirator. It is not recommended to put anything under your mask as this will interfere with the breathing resistance of the mask and will prohibit the flow of air through the mask. Worst case is a build up of carbon dioxide inside the mask.
There are several masks on the market that have a fluid resistance built into the masks material. A good one is the Inovel N-95. These are a medical grade N-95 designed to be worn for extended periods.
