GEOLOGISTS:

Experts are now observing that Aftershocks are taking place over a very strange WIDE area.  Very different than what they have seen in similar scale quakes worldwide.

It is now known, not speculated, the 6.5 and 6.4 "aftershocks" were definitely on a different faults than the main one of the 7.4 to 7.8

-

Therefore further large aftershocks on all 3 faults are now expected!

Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, Geoscientist: "I'm calling out to those who may concern, check the dams in the region"

-

Due to the Earthquake a Gas Pipeline near the City of Kahramanmaraş in Southern Turkey has Exploded and is burning out of control with Emergency Services completely overwhelmed with Rescue Operations.

-

HISTORICAL TIDBIT:

The largest earthquake in Turkey since 1950 was of a magnitude 7.6 and occurred on August 17, 1999. (Tonight's quake was bigger)

More than 17,100 people died, more than 50,000 were injured, and up to 500,000 were homeless. The reports state, that the high death toll was mainly because of the poor construction materials."

The number of deaths in this ONGOING disaster will be 10,000+

Most of the Syrian-Turkish border may see major damage.

Cold weather, fires, aftershocks - possibly another major quake, collapse of dams further could worsen the situation.

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake has hit Turkey and Syria, killing more than 500 people and trapping many others.

The quake struck at 04:17 am local time (0117 GMT) at a depth of about 17.9 kilometers (11 miles) and was followed by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock 15 minutes later, according to the US Geological Survey.

Turkey’s AFAD emergencies service center put the first quake’s magnitude at 7.4.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake early Monday killed nearly 300 people in 10 towns in southeastern. Turkey and more than 230 in Syria. The toll is rising sharply as rescue teams dig desperately for survivors in hundreds of collapsed buildings. In Syria, the worst hit were Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Tartus provinces where the healthcare system is “overwhelmed” by the injured and some hospitals have been damaged by the quake. A maternity hospital in Afrin was evacuated with at least five deaths.

The tremor was felt in Israel, Lebanon and as far as Cyprus.

DJ,

One of the risks https://www.emsc-csem.org/#2 or https://www.emsc-csem.org/#2 could be the major quake causing other earthquakes.

-West towards Istanbul, Greece, (Northern) Italy

-East Iran, Georgia

-South via Death Sea via https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_African_Rift or into Eastern Africa....

----

NL/EU, Ukraine(!) offering help. Russia has military and a naval base in the struck Syrian part of the disaster area.

Maybe US/NATO forces could join Turkish (and Russian, Syrian, Iranian) aid workers in resque efforts ?

In fact, without too much doubt, I think today's earthquake might go down as the joint largest - if not the largest - quake ever to be instrumentally recorded in Turkey. The previous largest event was an M7.8 quake in December 1939 in NE Turkey, close to the N. Anatolian Fault

and

Replying to
The Northern Anatolian Fault has received much attention in recent years due to the apparent westward migration of large quakes toward Istanbul. But today's M7.8 earthquake seems to be related to the East Anatolian Fault zone that offsets the Arabian and Anatolian tectonic plates

DJ...The area has a "link" between THREE high risk fault zones...(towards west, south and east...)

In Gaziantep the castle is partly destroyed;

https://www.emsc-csem.org/#2 or https://www.emsc-csem.org/#2 has two M4,5 aftershocks -40 and 76 km deep- in the last hour...

DJ-Deep earthquakes may translate into stronger -less deep- following quakes...

Breaking of dams, further collapse of buildings/infra may kill even more people...

Those poor people. God help them all. I live in an earthquake zone and got into prepping solely to cope with the overdue Alpine Fault quake that will be coming our way any minute now. I lived through the Christchurch quake swarm in 2010 and 2011. It razed the almost the whole of central Christchurch and my local town, along with thousands of other buildings across the district.

I haven't felt an earthquake for some months now. The last big one we had was the Kaikoura quake in 2016 and that was a 7.8. It shook my house constantly for 2 minutes. The after effect of earthquakes on people, from my experience, is that since all earthquakes start the same, if we even feel a small jolt or hear a noise that sounds like an earthquake (because sometimes you hear them coming before you feel them), and as soon as you think "earthquake" you get a huge adrenalin rush, and not in a good way.

I was in a lecture a few years ago, and not many people in this particular venue realised that a train track ran directly behind the building. Mid way through the talk a huge freight train rumbled past and half the room dived under their desks to duck, cover and hold, thinking it was an earthquake.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

DJ...We are now in the "second disaster phase" after phase 1-in this case several major earthquakes...Strong aftershocks still ongoing in a wide area...

The horror-part in this phase is people stuck in ruins shouting for help-not enough help available...Then there is silence...

It would have been so welcome if we could get enough trained help in place in time...International cooperation should enable such 24/7 disaster organization able to deal with all kinds of major disasters all around the globe...It seems to be easier to destroy "targets" within a few hours all around the globe then to provide help...

Given the freezing temperatures a lot of people are NOW dying-even if they survived the initial disaster....

KiwiMum, I did see images of the major damage New Zealand did see after strong quakes...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Kaik%C5%8Dura_earthquake or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Kaik%C5%8Dura_earthquake may illustrate the differences between major quakes...The quake itself killed two people in New Zealand...better housing part of the story...Population may be the main difference...in the area hit by yesterdays quakes in the Türkiye/Syrian border area there live up to 20 million (?) people...A lot of them in "not the best houses". The NZ 2016 quake was in a sparsely populated area...

NATO-wars did result in Syria infrastructure severely damaged and over 10 million (most in Syria itself) refugees...

So comparing the "second disaster phase" in 2016 New Zealand with 2023 Middle East quake may show also a lot of difference...In fact in NZ the story was "cleaning up" ...At present-again-in phase 2 in Türkiye, Syria more people could die then in phase 1....The 2016 NZ quake was in november-decent weather...again-cold/snow-is killing people now...

Those deaths could and should have been avoided ! It is a shame so many people die AFTER the quake(s) !

https://www.moonofalabama.org/2023/02/earthquake-damage-syria-requires-sanction-relief.html or https://www.moonofalabama.org/2023/02/earthquake-damage-syria-requires-sanction-relief.html puts the population in the struck area at 10 million...DJ-NATO's criminal regime change wars keep on killing citizens around the globe....

DJ-In phase two of any disaster-directly after the disaster till a few days-at best a week-later trying to save survivors is priority...Also getting care (drink, food, shelter) to those that survived has to start...In practice getting help to areas where it is needed often takes to long...Lack of helicopters, heavy machines, fuel...One of the main goals in less damaged areas is to open roads so help can get to those areas where people are stuck...

Phase three-starting when one should not expect survivors-has getting water, food, shelter as priority...Evacuation to save areas...disease control...Planes get in with aid and out with refugees...

Phase four gets forgotten often...long term care...People should not be living in tent-cities for years...Schools, jobs are needed, houses need to be built...(but maybe not in a high risk area, not the same kind of high-risk housing...). But also care is important. Mental care for people with mental issues (depression-a normal reaction when your familie died in the disaster...PTSD, sleeping-problems...).

https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lijst_van_zwaarste_aardbevingen_in_Nederland or https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lijst_van_zwaarste_aardbevingen_in_Nederland We -in april 1992- did see an M5,8 earthquake in NL...I slept through it....At 3.20 AM most people sleep in NL...

The 2011 M 4.5 quake in NL sounded like an underground train passing from east to west under the house...in the evening...watching TV...The 2002 M 4,9 quake in the morning did see buildings shaking here in NL, elevators stuck, alarms went off...For that matter, we in NL and even people in New Zealand may consider themselves lucky...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_disasters_in_New_Zealand_by_death_toll or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_disasters_in_New_Zealand_by_death_toll The 2011 Christchurch quake -killing 185 people- was "bad" but the present -still ongoing- disaster in the Middle East is several magnitudes worse...

Maybe between 10,000 and 15,000 deaths may be "optimistic"...and a lot of them avoidable if more help could be given in time...

See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_natural_disasters_by_death_toll or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_natural_disasters_by_death_toll and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_earthquakes#Deadliest_earthquakes or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_earthquakes#Deadliest_earthquakes  lots of earthquakes may have killed over 100,000 people...

DJ, Some more remarks MainStreamMedia/MSM may "miss"....

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?currentFeatureId=us6000jm53&extent=32.12911,26.98242&extent=40.19566,44.56055&listOnlyShown=true or https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?currentFeatureId=us6000jm53&extent=32.12911,26.98242&extent=40.19566,44.56055&listOnlyShown=true has sevaral quakes -today- moving South West towards Cyprus....

Just like in pandemics predicting earthquakes-getting a realistic view- is not always easy...

-Deep quakes likely may be followed by stronger less deep quakes...but timing and location may be a question...

-Swarms of quakes also work as "pressure velve"...may start and stop for unclear reasons...

-Volcanic-seismic (long distance) links is also a big question...Sometimes it looks like there may be very long distance links...

-Methane release increase could indicate seismic activity increasing...

DJ, Sunday afternoon I watched info on the 2011 Japan quake/tsunami...the three days-disaster...Others may have been paying more attention to potential seismic activities...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Flu_Trends or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Flu_Trends ; Google Flu Trends (GFT) was a web service operated by Google. It provided estimates of influenza activity for more than 25 countries. By aggregating Google Search queries, it attempted to make accurate predictions about flu activity. This project was first launched in 2008 by Google.org to help predict outbreaks of flu.[1]

DJ...Animals are "believed" to "sense" a coming earthquake...Maybe human actions could indicate future events as well ? An increase in google searches on a specific event before the event shows up in some way as a sort of indicator ?

Overdue earthquakes are "misleading" because historic data may give a wrong impression. On average once in 10,000 years may see events happen twice in the same year...and nothing in 20,000 years...(Major earthquakes leave marks in earths surface).

Better housing may save a lot of lives...Better communication "what to do if" , drills also will save lives...Sometimes it may be wiser to move to higher ground/safety by foot then-getting stuck-then by car...

Having extra healthcare capacity (staff, still able to do healthcare because of regular drills), extra room/beds...clean water, blankets...may save lives as well.

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

The devastating earthquake that hit Southern Turkiye on Monday could result in a death toll of over 20,000, according to the WHO. The quake was 67km north-east of Kahramanmaraş, a city in the Mediterranean Region of the country, close to the border with Syria. Extensive damage and casualties have been reported in both countries. Hundreds of thousands, including civil war refugees, are misplaced and without food and shelter.

In terms of regional response, Russia has sent rescue teams Middle East nations such as the UAE while Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Jordan have all made emergency funds and support teams available.

Efforts to find survivors are being hampered by the weather, with the regional temperatures close to zero and with freezing rain.

DJ https://www.sana.sy/en/?p=299386 or https://www.sana.sy/en/?p=299386 on help for Syria...

Bad weather, limited/bad roads, western countries pushing for more war may be in the way of providing enough help in time...

Israel has reportedly agreed to transfer blankets, medicines, medical treatment and other aid to Syria as emergency relief for the disastrous earthquake still rumbling across the country and Turkey. Israel and Syria who share a border are in a state of war.  Although this was denied by the Assad regime, the request for help was indeed forwarded to Israel from Russia.

A welcome sign...

DJ, A Dutch man on twitter february 3;

Sooner or later there will be a ~M 7.5 #earthquake in this region (South-Central Turkey, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon). #deprem

DJ...

Yes, there is much resistance within the scientific community regarding the influence of the planets and the Moon. But there's no extended research that 'disproves' it. It's merely an assumption. In fact, a scientific paper in Nature suggests otherwise.

You're absolutely right Josh, there's a huge difference between a quake here in NZ and one is Syria or Turkey and the quality of the buildings plays a large part. We lost 181 people in the Feb 2011 quake and that low number was due to the building code. I've been watching all those pancaked buildings in Turkey and those poor people really don't stand a chance. With all our resources we failed to save about 140 people trapped in just 2 buildings that had collapsed like that, and they have hundreds of collapsed buildings.

The thing about a big quake is the duration of the ground movement and the momentum swing that builds up in structures as the quake rolls on. A building that has withstood a 20 second quake may well collapse with a 60 second one, and generally the bigger the quake, the longer the shaking in time.

Those poor people in Turkey and Syria. The horror of it all. I can tell you from experience that after a big quake, the ground seems to keep moving for a few months with aftershocks, some of which can be big quakes in their own right, but also the ground seems to rise and fall as if you are in a ship on the ocean. You generally don't notice it when you're walking around but when you sit down or get into bed you can feel slightly sea sick. We had that for about 3 months after the 2011 swarm. At first it was constant, and then intermittent, but it was there. You'd be sitting watching television on the sofa and suddenly feel a bit queasy.

The upshot of this kind of after movement is that people are often too frightened to be inside buildings. In the huge Napier quake in Feb 1931, which is mid summer here, everyone slept outside in makeshift tents or under the stars for about 6 weeks until there was less ground motion. That is not really an option for the people of Turkey and Syria since it is sub zero temperatures and it's snowing. But one thing is for certain, everyone will be terrified and running on adrenalin. The lucky ones will have cars to sleep in. It's a terrible situation.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

KiwiMum, As far as I know the most south part of New Zealand still can get cold, windy ...though less likely to see earthquakes...Timing matters...The Middle East earthquake did happen during a cold period...In some places even snow...

DJ-We are supposed to have winter here...did not see any snow where I live this year....it looks like spring may arrive next week...(weeks early)...

In short cockroaches...insects...catching/spreading CoViD...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockroach#Hardiness or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockroach#Hardiness ;

Cockroaches are among the hardiest insects. Some species are capable of remaining active for a month without food and are able to survive on limited resources, such as the glue from the back of postage stamps.[62] Some can go without air for 45 minutes. Japanese cockroach (Periplaneta japonicanymphs, which hibernate in cold winters, have survived twelve hours at −5 to −8 °C (23 to 18 °F) in laboratory experiments.[63]

Experiments on decapitated specimens of several species of cockroach found a variety of behavioral functionality remained, including shock avoidance and escape behavior, although many insects other than cockroaches are also able to survive decapitation, and popular claims of the longevity of headless cockroaches do not appear to be based on published research.[64][65] The severed head is able to survive and wave its antennae for several hours, or longer when refrigerated and given nutrients.[65]

It is popularly suggested that cockroaches will "inherit the earth" if humanity destroys itself in a nuclear war. While cockroaches do, indeed, have a much higher radiation resistance than vertebrates, with a lethal dose perhaps six to 15 times that for humans, they are not exceptionally radiation-resistant compared to other insects, such as the fruit fly.[66]

The cockroach's ability to withstand radiation has been explained through the cell cycle. Cells are most vulnerable to the effects of radiation while they are dividing. A cockroach's cells divide only once each molting cycle (which is weekly, for the juvenile German cockroach[67]). Since not all cockroaches would be molting at the same time, many would be unaffected by an acute burst of radiation, although lingering and more acute radiation would still be harmful.[59]

DJ...cockroaches very likely love earthquakes providing food....

-----------

In the Türkiye/Syrian earthquake area population is 28 million...Deaths may get close to 0,1% of that population....(28,000 ?)

Even if the house may still stand-without water, gas, power millions of people are de facto homeless...

It is good a lot of help is on its way, internation rescue may still be able to get people out of ruins alive...Evacuations may be hard because a lot of people hope to hear news on missing loved ones...Maybe the most problematic disaster area could be a borderzone controlled by "western backed jihadi's/ "opposition"....renamed IS terrorists...

 • On February 7, the Russian Ministry of Defense recorded no cases of hostilities and ceasefire violations in the Latakia region in the past 24 hours;

DJ...I hope ALL people in need will get the help needed...Maybe normalization of Türkiye-Syria relations will speed up including finding solutions for conflicts.

It would be more then welcome if NATO/US moved out of Syria and Iraq....

DJ, https://ssgeos.org/ or https://ssgeos.org/ ;

validity of earthquake forecasting

It is often stated that in order for an earthquake forecast to be valid it must define 3 elements: 1) the date and time, 2) the location, and 3) the magnitude. We believe that this requirement is unrealistic for the same reason that a weather forecast is allowed to say that even on the most shiny days there is a 0-10% or 30-40% precipitation PROBABILITY, without specifying the precise location. This has been valid scientific practice for decades.

Our focus is on earthquakes with approximately magnitude 6 and greater because earthquakes in this category tend to occur more often when planets reach specific positions in the solar system, which explains the usual clustering of these larger earthquakes in time. A good example is December 2016, which was seismically very active because of more critical planetary positions throughout the month, which allowed us to issue three warnings in advance.

While statistics say something about the average occurrence over long periods of time, they do not say anything about the actual occurrence in real time. If for example statistics say that a magnitude 6 earthquake occurs every 2.7 days on average, it does not mean that this is what usually happens. In extreme cases there can be 20 or even 25 days between magnitude 6 earthquakes. Likewise, the average can go up to less than 2 days over a period of several weeks. In addition, there is a big difference between magnitude 6.0 and 6.9, the latter of which occurs much less frequently. The same applies to magnitude 7 earthquakes. While on average they occur every 20-24 days, in reality we sometimes see two or three in a month, while in extreme cases there can be a drought of half a year or more, like in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Some argue that earthquakes happen all the time or that planetary conjunctions (alignments) happen all the time. These kind of arguments are too general. One should ask what kind of earthquakes, like magnitude 4, 5 or 6, which are very different categories, both in strength and occurrence. Likewise, one should carefully study the occurrence and type of planetary conjunctions. Sometimes there are no conjunctions for more than a week or even two weeks. Sometimes there are a dozen conjunctions or more in one month, as was the case in December 2016 and September 2022. Moreover, not all conjunctions are the same and their electromagnetic influence greatly depends on the planets involved.

A scientific argument often heard is that planets have little influence, as the distance between them is too great for the gravitational force to be of significance. While mathematics can be applied to prove that the gravitational force is indeed (too) weak, the logic behind this reasoning is flawed at the very root, because it does not explain why only the gravitational force between the planets should be considered. After all, of the four fundamental forces currently recognized in nature, gravity is the weakest and usually dominated by the electromagnetic force. In the 1940s, 50s and 60s RCA's radio engineer John H. Nelson proved through observation of short wave radio communication that planetary positions in the solar system greatly affect Earth's atmosphere. Of nearly 1,500 atmospheric condition forecasts that he made in 1967 he had an accuracy rate of 93.2%. His forecast methods, while seemingly forgotten, have not been refuted to date.

Again ...even if staring to toenails could result in good enough predictions on earthquakes it could save lives.....

If "it works it works"....I stopped following DutchSinse for some time...maybe he also "sort of" predicted/calculated this earthquake...There are several claims of people showing they "did get it right" at least sometimes...We may learn from it...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

DJ, the number of people killed in the earthquake seems to be moving towards 25,000....

Syria may allow help into "western backed terrorist held" northern areas....Also a dam did break in Syria (maybe linked to ongoing aftershocks).

The New Atlas from minute 18 on US sticking to sanctions against Syria https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlcsko6resY or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlcsko6resY ..."the west" clinging to "white helmets" as a charity....

https://southfront.org/catastrophic-earthquake-brings-turkey-syria-together/ or https://southfront.org/catastrophic-earthquake-brings-turkey-syria-together/ ;

The earthquake occurred amid a large winter storm, which hampered rescue efforts in both Turkey and Syria, dropping snow on the ruins and bringing plummeting temperatures.

More than 40 countries, including European Union members and the United States, were quick to dispatch rescue teams and ship humanitarian aid to Turkey.

The response to the catastrophe in Syria was slower, with the first aid delivered by Russia, Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Tunisia and Lebanon.

-

The earthquake interrupted Russian efforts to restore ties between Ankara and Damascus, who were close allies before the outbreak of the war in Syria. A high-level meeting between the defense ministers of Turkey and Syria was set to be held before the end of the month in Moscow. The meeting will likely be delayed. However, the natural disaster could in the end help bring the two countries closer.

DJ, Türkiye opened two border crossings into Syria for aid-transports...

https://southfront.org/israel-threatened-to-attack-syria-amid-earthquake-rescue-operations-report/ or https://southfront.org/israel-threatened-to-attack-syria-amid-earthquake-rescue-operations-report/ ;Israel is ready to attack Syria if Iran ships weapons there under the guise of humanitarian aid following the major earthquake, the Saudi-owned Elaph news site reported on February 9, citing an Israeli official.

DJ, Russia did ask Israel NOT to attack Damascus International Airport...before the quake Israel -claiming Iran was using the airport for weapons- did attack that airport several times...

https://www.sana.sy/en/?p=299971 or https://www.sana.sy/en/?p=299971Damascus, SANA-President Bashar al-Assad and Mrs. Asma al-Assad on Saturday met members of the Operations’ Room in Aleppo that comprises government bodies, organizations, civil associations, trade and industrial activities assigned to address the relief file in the most quake-affected areas in the city.

DJ...the west may not control the Syrian government...at least Syria has a government (Libya de facto has not...fully destroyed by NATO...) .

https://www.sana.sy/en/?p=299958 or https://www.sana.sy/en/?p=299958Algeria-SANA, Algeria announced it will fiance Syria with 15 million,  as part of the assistance it provides to the brotherly Syrian people, in solidarity with them, following the devastating earthquake.

DJ, Arab, Islamic solidarity may mean increase of non-western help for Syria....

Also https://tass.com/world/1575017 or https://tass.com/world/1575017 ; ST. PETERSBURG, February 10. /TASS/. A special Russian archaeological team is ready to go to Syria to survey historical monuments damaged in the devastating earthquake, Natalia Solovyova, head of the rescue archaeology center at the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told TASS on Friday.

DJ, culture defines who you are...

Daraa,SANA-A Jordanian aid convoy arrived on Friday dawn through the Nassib Jaber border crossing provided by the Jordanian government for the benefit of those affected by the earthquake.

A Palestinian rescue team arrived yesterday evening through the Nassib Jaber border crossing.

DJ...the "west" is getting even more isolated in their regime-change sanctions wars....

https://syria.liveuamap.com/ or https://syria.liveuamap.com/ (pro-western)

DJ-The disaster is moving from phase-2 trying to resqua survivors to phase-3 limit health risks, restoring infra structure...Since sewage is gone, death bodies/animals still widespread, no garbage disposal health risks are increasing.

Lots of international aid soon may stop. Their goal was to save lives...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_search_and_rescue or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_search_and_rescue has its procedures;

-If it is certain their are survivors in a spot that gets priority over "suspected" spots...

-+12 hours "dig" = "B¨ ...has to wait for "easier/less time taking" rescues

-Also number of people may be a criterium

-Weather likely also a factor

-Access to spot...can heavy machines get into the area=also a factor...

DJ So "search and rescue operations" may go on for a few more days...After that "rescue" may be an illusion...Other kinds of help have more priority...

Weather & wars in the area also are factors...it is only welcome fighting -for now-stopped...(lasting peace would be welcome !)...

DJ,

Earthquake deaths now close to 30,000 UN expects it may double...

Austrian/German rescue teams now working in Hatay with Turkish army protection. Civil unrest -looting- a major problem. A NL rescue team stops after today-sunday. Other help by now may save more lives...food/water/sanitation now becoming the major needs...

Cuba, Russia, Iran, China a.o. likely active both in Syria and Türkiye...https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/only-one-border-crossing-open-opposition-held-northwestern-syria or https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/only-one-border-crossing-open-opposition-held-northwestern-syria ;

International organizations are calling for more border crossings to be opened for aid to reach Northwestern Syria, where thousands of people have died following Monday’s earthquake in neighboring Turkey. Even before the quake, the opposition-held region of Syria was deep in humanitarian crisis, with 4.1 million out of its 4.5 million inhabitants depending on humanitarian aid, following a nearly 12-year-long civil war that is still ongoing.

As Statista's Anna Fleck shows in the chart below, currently only one UN-sanctioned border crossing is operational between Turkey and Syria. It saw the first convoy of six trucks carrying aid on Thursday, three days after the quake struck, despite having been planned before the earthquake. According to the UN, the convoy was hampered by heavy damage to roads on the Turkish side. The second convoy is reported to have arrived only today.

DJ...The US at first "welcomed" the earthquake increasing pressure on Syria...on top of US-western sanctions...Maybe the US may have noticed such an attitude is seen as barbaric...even for European allies...

The US war against Assad since 2011 -western media claim it is a civil war- did kill hundreds of thousends and resulted in over 10 million refugees...A lot of these refugees may now have been killed due to the earthquake...It does not fit western media that as a result of a NATO regime change war millions ended up in bad houses...

According to western media "Turkish corruption" is the major problem...In may Erdogan may be re-elected...NATO would like to have a NATO-puppet in Ankara...Türkiye has over 4 million refugees..Turkish-Syrian talks a.o. had the goal of returning a lot of refugees into Syria...

Phase-3 of the disasterplan has to be restoring infrastructure...logistics. Increase food/water for survivors...Phase-4 is rebuilding houses, hospitals etc. In both phases disease control has to be a high priority...Safety is needed-maybe international peace keepers ?

DJ; Türkiye -since the EU refused entry- ( Islam-phobia...insane !) is moving more and more to its neighbours; the Arab world (Syria, Iraq), Iran, Russia...Both Syria and Túrkiye may soon join a BRICS currency/financial system...Russia, Iran, India, China are already working on it...Latin America (Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Mexico, Cuba) may be interested as well as most of Africa...

The quake did shake also global relations...

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

DJ, Earthquake deaths could go over 100,000 ???

-A NL -USAR (Urban Search And Rescue) team moved out of Türkiye another NL team -with dogs trained to find dead bodies- is moving in....chance of survivors is almost 0%...

https://nltimes.nl/2023/02/12/twelve-injured-earthquake-victims-taken-hospital-dutch-defense-aircraft or https://nltimes.nl/2023/02/12/twelve-injured-earthquake-victims-taken-hospital-dutch-defense-aircraft ;

A total of 12 people injured by the earthquake in Turkey were taken on the first two flights of a Dutch defense aircraft. According to the Ministry of Defense, 69 family members also flew with them. The injured were taken to hospitals in the seaside resort of Antalya and in the capital, Ankara.

The C-130 Hercules transport aircraft will continue to fly for the next two weeks to bring victims out of the disaster area, a ministry spokesperson said. The aircraft has been modified to be suitable for medical flights. On board are two doctors and six nurses. In addition, there is room for up to 70 people.

Commander of the detachment, Lieutenant Colonel Maurice Schonk, thinks this is a good result. "The help is very much appreciated by the population," he said.

Currently, there are warnings of fuel shortages in the region, but aircraft will not be affected, a Defense Ministry spokesperson said earlier. "Only in the disaster area is there a shortage of fuel. There is no fuel shortage at regular airports in Turkey."

DJ...the disaster area may be twice the size of France...population involved between 20 and 30 million...a lot of them now without a roof...in need of food/water...

Another-related- story; https://southfront.org/casualties-reported-after-turkish-drone-strike-on-northern-syria-video/ or https://southfront.org/casualties-reported-after-turkish-drone-strike-on-northern-syria-video/ ;

The Turkish military has reportedly carried out nine attacks with combat drones and loitering munitions on positions and vehicles of the SDF in northern and eastern Syria since the start of the year. The attacks killed four personnel of the SDF and three civilians.

The new drone strike came just less than a week after a devastating earthquake that hit several parts of central and southern Turkey as well as northern and western Syria. More than 34,000 people in both countries were killed.

The SDF and affiliated Kurdish forces didn’t cease their attacks on Turkish-occupied areas in northern Syria to facilitate rescue and aid operations. The Turkish military and its proxies also launched several attacks against the group’s territory after the disaster.

President al-Assad affirmed the need for bringing in the urgent aid to all areas in Syria including those that are subjected to occupation and the dominance of the armed terrorist groups.

The President also stressed the necessity for the international efforts to concentrate on reconstructing infrastructure in Syria as this issue is an urgent need for the stability of the Syrian people and the return of Syrian refugees to their cities and regions.

In NL news the claim "Assad finally agreed in opening two extra border crossings in an area NOT under Assad control"...

https://www.sana.sy/en/?p=300401 or https://www.sana.sy/en/?p=300401

Damascus, SANA-People’s Assembly on Monday called for lifting sanctions imposed on the country.

During a regular session chaired by Speaker, Hammuda Sabbagh, the Parliament demanded immediate, urgent and unconditional actions to lift the unjust blockade and the unilateral coercive measures imposed on the Syrian people.

Members of the Assembly said that all countries and international organizations have to assume their full responsibilities in that regard, and take what is necessary to provide assistance to the Syrians affected by the earthquake in order to ease their suffering.

They also called for keeping away from politicizing the humanitarian catastrophe caused by the earthquake in Syria.

In this regard, Speaker Hammouda addressed 46 identical messages to speakers of councils, brotherly and friendly countries, appealing the international community to move and immediately lift the unjust blockade imposed on the Syrian people to overcome the impacts of the devastating earthquake that hit Syria.

DJ...a.o. The New Atlas mentioned US sticking to sanctions...de facto welcoming the earthquake "in the hope" both Ankara and Damascus would be "more willing" to "work with the US"(=follow US orders...). My impression is Syria is getting a lot of help from non-western countries (from Venezuela, Cuba to China, Pakistan, Russia). Also Syrians in the west try to get help into Syria...

Pinned Tweet

No donations are being allowed to the Syrian government controlled side of earth quake hit Syria because of US led sanctions and not enough equipment to lull people out of the rubble. World. This is you.

DJ The most problematic area is the "western backed terrorists held area" in between Türkiye and Syria...land-routes from Türkiye were blocked...some "rebels" did not want help from the Syrian side...Assad wanted some control over the "help" some western countries would send into the area...(DJ-I do not doubt the US will send in weapons as "aid" for IS-linked "moderate terrorists"...).

For the first time, a #SaudiArabia plane landed in #Aleppo after 12 years of boycott. Saudi rescue teams and trucks have already been sent to the affected area of west-Syria.

DJ, "the west" still sticking to sanctions and regime change is shocking "the rest" -90%- of the global population...

https://www.emsc-csem.org/Earthquake/europe/ or https://www.emsc-csem.org/Earthquake/europe/ still showing aftershocks in the area...

Also limited reports of diseases in the earthquake area...https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/earth-weather-astronomy-environment/volcanos-earthquakes-glaciers-fires-hurricanes/968116-turkey-and-syria-7-8-magnitude-quake-reportedly-over-33-000-dead-now?view=stream or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/earth-weather-astronomy-environment/volcanos-earthquakes-glaciers-fires-hurricanes/968116-turkey-and-syria-7-8-magnitude-quake-reportedly-over-33-000-dead-now?view=stream may be of help-for info-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010s_Haiti_cholera_outbreak or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010s_Haiti_cholera_outbreak ; The 2010s Haiti cholera outbreak is the first modern large-scale outbreak of cholera—a disease once considered beaten back largely due to the invention of modern sanitation. The disease was reintroduced to Haiti in October 2010, not long after the disastrous earthquake earlier that year, and since then cholera has spread across the country and become endemic, causing high levels of both morbidity and mortality.[5] Nearly 800,000 Haitians have been infected by cholera, and more than 9,000 have died, according to the United Nations (UN).[6

DJ, So clean water, food, shelter, fuel has to get into the area...if possible people evacuated out of the area...(some western countries may give visa so people from the disaster area can go to family in the west...).

Given the large area, the high number of people involved, the conflicts, weather, (expected to improve later on this week) there is a high risk for a "disaster following the disaster"....Like in Haïti maybe international military help may be of use to prevent countries trying to use the crisis for their agenda...It would be welcome if Saudi Arabia and Iran -with help of Russia/China/Cuba- could bring stability to the region...

In Türkiye presidential elections were planned for may. As far as I know there -for now- is no reason to postpone them.
