More dead, stranded seals wash up on Maine beaches
Total number of dead seals reaches nearly 350 PORTLAND, Maine — Waves and wind from Hurricane Florence has brought more stranded and dead seals to Maine's shores, bringing the total number of dead seals to nearly 350. Last month, NOAA researchers announced the seals that have washed up on Maine beaches this summer may be infected with either avian flu or distemper. The first batch of samples of dead seals from Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire tested positive for the two viruses, officials with NOAA said. Four seals tested positive for both viruses. NOAA said it is too early to say if the viruses are primary cause of death. In all, 344 dead seals and 126 live ones have washed up on Maine beaches from July 1 to Sept. 10, the last day data was updated. Marine Mammals of Maine, an organization that responds to dead or stranded marine animals said they responded to 57 marine mammal strandings last week. For all of Maine, Massachusetts and New England, the numbers are 661 dead and 117 live. Anyone who sees a new sick or injured seal is asked to call the NOAA hotline at 866-755-NOAA (6622). A NOAA researcher said the agency was hoping to share more information about the deaths soon, but had no new information Wednesday. https://www.wmtw.com/article/meet-the-flying-dutchman-the-hobo-king/23320928 |
