Cancel the World Cup?

From WorldCupLatest.com, not a regular source of flu news: World Cup Finals Could Be Cancelled If Avian Flu Pandemic Breaks Out In Germany.

Fears have been raised about the possibility of the 2006 World Cup being called off if there is a bird flu pandemic in Germany, a senior German politician, and leading expert of the World Health Organization (WHO) was quoted as saying in the press on Tuesday.

The chairwoman of the Agricultural Committee of the German Parliament, Baerbel Hoehn said that such a drastic move would be contemplated, if there are mass cases of human avian influenza detected in Germany in the coming months.

Meanwhile the WHO director of the influenza program, Klaus Stoehr has agreed with Hoehn's assessment, and wants measures in place should the current situation worsen.

"If a pandemic breaks out, one has to think very carefully what to do. This is no doomsaying," Stoehr said.

Well, it's doomsaying to soccer fans, of whom I am one. But it makes absolute sense. Bringing thousands of people together from all over the world, mixing them in compact crowds, and sending them home again would be a disaster if H2H were in Germany. It would be the peacetime equivalent of soldiers in the trenches going home to spread the Spanish flu.

In the event of the pandemic arriving, most countries have plans to cancel most mass-gatherings, which will involve all stadium sports pretty much. Whether they activate thee plans really depends on the sickness & daethrate I presume.

I dont really think its a German issue, doesnt matter where the world cup is. Because if they are talking about proper pandemic it would be very weird if its just a 'german pandemic'. On the otherhand maybe they are saying the world cup might get cancelled if many germans get bird-flu from birds, rather than whent he proper pandemic has begun?

A news article about more German soldiers being dispatched:

Bundeswehr deploys more soldiers in fight against bird flu

In the fight against the spread of the bird flu, the Bundeswehr is willing to deploy 250 additional helpers to the island of Ruegen in the Baltic Sea. At first, the soldiers will help to retrieve dead birds, according to a spokesperson. About 700 dead birds have been found thus far, according to a county representative, Mrs. Kassner. In addition, as a preventative measure, the slaughtering of domestic poultry was started. The area most affected is the North of Ruegen, where the rate of infections is highest. Since Sunday, all vehicles on the dam of Ruegen have to pass over mats soaked with disinfectants.

German Agricultural minister Seehofer met in Brussels with his colleagues in the EU, to discuss the fighting of the bird flu. Seehofer said that gaining control of the situation on Ruegen is the top priority. The CSU politician stated that one of the reasons the bird flu virus spread so quickly is the fact that scavengers were infected by dead birds. Yesterday, a state of emergency was declared for Ruegen, and county representative Mrs.Kassner recommended that all small animal farmers should start with slaughtering their poultry. In addition, she announced further controls of stocks by veterinarians in the coming days. The German Farmers' Union demanded the payment of compensations to the farmers. The secretary general of the union, Mr. Born, stated on Deutschlandfunk that federal and state government, as well as the EU, will have to come to the rescue in case farmers risk their livelyhood by slaughtering their stock.
