Special to The Miami Herald
PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Local officials are reporting that 42 people have died, almost all of them children, in an outbreak of a still unidentified disease in the remote Ņurum district of Panama's indigenous Ngobe-Bugle region. The ailment begins with a runny nose, coughing and fever, and when it gets deadly the victims present symptoms that look like bronchial pneumonia, according to a statement by Panama's Health Ministry. The Health Ministry and the semi-automomous Gorgas Memorial Laboratory say they don't know the cause of the illness..........The Health Ministry said in a Sept. 29 press release that the problem appears to be ''a known acute viral respiratory situation like influenza,'' but on Monday a ministry spokesman said that no flu or other virus had yet been identified. |

I noticed than none of these cases including mexico were proven to be BF. So what are we to think, BF for real or another opportunistic infection? Maybe medclinician knows.

If it is BF down there I doubt that we'll get any follow up on it. Expect no more news coverage of Panama in the future. Blackout's been here for a year guys, I saw when it started.

Article con't.
WE'RE STUDYING IT'
''We're studying it, and the Gorgas Lab is working on it, but to say anything now would be speculation,'' said a ministry official who asked for anonymity because he lacked authorization to comment on the case. Federal government officials say they know of only 10 deaths, but some of their comments on the case have been contradictory. LIMITED ACCESS The information problem has been made worse by the difficulty in getting to Ņurum in central Veraguas province, where the dirt roads become impassable to most vehicles in this, the rainy season. The population in many cases lives a long walk from even those precarious roads. Word of a problem first got out in mid-September when local officials contacted the Health Ministry and then, alarmed by what they considered a lackadaisical response, took their story to the news media. On September 23 Gladys Guerrero, the ministry's director of epidemiology, denied to a reporter for the tabloid El Siglo that there was any viral or bacterial pathogen at work, attributing the problem to complications of rainy season colds that are common in the area, especially because of its poor sanitary conditions. Guerrero also said that local claims at the time of 10 deaths since late August were exaggerated. Within five days, Ngobe officials were reporting 40 deaths and many more sick. The La Prensa newspaper has reported that more than 30 children from Ņurum are being treated in various hospitals around the country. PRESS RELEASE The country's disease control center, the Gorgas Memorial Institute, is working to identify the cause of the outbreak. The Health Ministry said in a Sept. 29 press release that the problem appears to be ''a known acute viral respiratory situation like influenza,'' but on Monday a ministry spokesman said that no flu or other virus had yet been identified. The U.S. government has offered help, but as of Tuesday Panama had not asked for international assistance. The Ngobe-Bugle district, the youngest of Panama's semi-autonomous indigenous regions, comprises about 9 percent of the country's land mass and has its biggest concentration of poverty. Many of the inhabitants leave for part of the year to pick coffee or other crops. FRACTIOUS AREA The district, shared among its Ngobe majority and Bugle and other minorities, is politically fractious and its self-governing institutions are not as developed as in some other indigenous areas in Panama. After news of the illness broke, President Martín Torrijos cut short a trip to the United States and flew into Ņurum with a team of some 60 healthcare workers. Government officials fanned out to visit thousands of families and advise them to cooperate with health officials and that nobody evacuated to a city hospital would be left stranded -- a concern that had led some of the poor parents to refuse to let their children be taken to a hospital. |

I agree gnfin, it would be nice if we could find out more about this. Dengue has a death rate of 1% - 5%, which would mean with 40 deaths there would be at least 1000 sick. I suppose we can also rule out Ebola. It could be a Hantavirus outbreak, unless the "H3N2/ Panama" flu mutated.

I just read the article and the fact that they flew in 60 medical workers is a red flag in my opinion....I mean take 10 or so but taking 60 means they are running scared.....ya know?

Hey, i was just reading one of the other posts and saw this in response to something on this post....
The above comments once again raise concerns about H5N1 detection in patients in Indonesia and elsewhere. In the 1918 pandemic, the most common misdiagnosis were typhoid fever, dengue fever, and cholera. In the current H5N1 outbreak, the misdiagnosis of H5N1 as typhoid and dengue fever is common.

Thanks for the kind words gnfin. I do in fact believe you're sincere about the company and that you feel it could save lives. I actually used to spend a little time on Ragingbull several years ago, which is why I'm somewhat hesitant on posting stocks here. We have a lot of good people around here and our first responsibility, is to them. It would weigh fairly heavy on me if people lost money in the market because of this site.
Anyway gnfin, we appreciate the support and we will unblock the company name shortly so it doesn't come up *** .

I wonder why we didn't hear about the mystery illness when people were getting sick, and instead the headlines are 42 died......now we are seeing articles suggesting avian flu has been misdiagnosed as Dengue and Typhoid fever so we can't even trust the mexico diagnosis....its just too much really....any thoughts? i went out and searched for panama+bird flu and it returned nothing.

If it was BF, that's the biggest cluster we've ever seen. Even the sumatra cluster was only 8 people or so. Don't expect any further coverage that's accurate due to blackout.

GNFIN - the link is already on this string and so there was no need to post it here and also no need for you to open another string with the same article. Not trying to be a pain in the butt, but I keep looking at your posts and they are duplicates so maybe you could pay a little more attention.

Yes, it is basically the same as the one I started the thread with. But I have learned not to give any links or you get your posting and user name taken away.
I was told we don't give links here. |

You can post all the links you want here. You can post links to your own websites if you like. Like I've said, the members here can really do as they please. Any specific links that are not allowed, for whatever reason, are already blocked with ******. If a link comes up with an asterix symbol, then I would just ask that you don't try to bypass the word filter and fix the link.
