Hello all.  Just found out,  husband and I are having a baby, this was a BIG suprise ! I have prepped mostly for older child.  I would really like a few ideas where to start.  Maybe top 10 things to have for baby.  This has so got me back into prepping !!!

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Babies are always a blessing.  I am really happy for you and your husband.

Here is a list I made for you.  Most of it came from this site and the Internet.   It is in no particular order, as I just went through my lists and picked whatever I thought was suitable for baby. I am also including a recommendation that I had pasted in my files.  You may want to consider it.

Recommendation: Each family member and each emergency kit MUST have a durable card (i.e. laminated) with comprehensive contact information, including multiple out-of-state emergency contacts.  Enlist the help of distant friends or relatives to act as a message switchboard in a crisis.  This is a proven, reliable technique for reuniting separated family members when local communications are degraded or offline.

  • Formula
  • Diapers
  • Bottles
  • Powdered milk
  • Medications
  • bulb syringe for stuffy noses
  • pediatric electrolyte solution or make your own : Rehydration Solution for Adults & Teens • 4 cups of clean water • 2 Tablespoons of sugar • 1⁄2 teaspoon of salt Mix all the ingredients until the sugar disappears. You can drink the solution at room temperature. Please note: Do not boil the solution because that will reduce the solution’s helpfulness.
  • bottles and nipples
  • wipes
  • baby oil
  • baby shampoo
  • Orajel? or jell to help pain when growing teeth
  • Melissa oil to calm baby down (put a few drops on a handkerchief and place it close to baby’s head – it works)
  • baby suppositories to help bm
  • baby suppositories to reduce fever
  • Children’s’ cough medicine
  • children’s ibuprofen and acetaminophen,
  • Water bottle to keep baby warm in case of electrical failure
  • plastic mattress protector
  • disposable diapers
  • cloth diapers and plastic covers to avoid leakage
  • toys such as rattles, colorful soft toys, etc.
  • Battery operated lullaby toy
  • teething ring
  • Next-size or two clothing
  • blankets, pillow, sheets
  • childrens’ tooth brushes (those little gums will grow teeth, eventually)
  • Baby moses – baby can fit in the basket for up to three months and it is easy to just pick up and go and baby is very comfortable in it
  • Baby fingernail clippers or scissors
  • Vaseline petroleum jelly
  • Small potty
  • Touch me books, board books, pop-up books
  • Medicine dropper
  • Diarrhea medicine
  • Q-tips
  • Baby Food or baby food manual grinder to make your own
  • Baby juices
  • Tweezers
  • Baby bottle liner
  • Book: Where there is no doctor – you can get at Amazon
  • thermometer
  • Lice shampoo for children and adults – you never know

I hope this helps.  Congratulations, again.

You are welcome!  You are so wise in not letting any threat of any type cloud the joy of having a baby.  Don't be scared, you have prepped and you and your family will be all right.  I am really excited for you.

I just wanted to mention that today I went shopping for a pair of shoes for me and, instead, ended up buying clothes for my grandchildren.  I found winter clothes at great prices - even 75% off.  The clothes may be a little large for my grandbabies, but they will grow into them.  Great time to shop for little clothes for next cold weather season, when your little one will actually be here.

Take care.

You might want to print out a recipe for infant formula and have it and the ingredients available - just in case.

Welcome to the "Baby on the Way Club!" We have #7 set to be born around the beginning of May. I'm the only person that I know that has actually worn out her maternity clothes!

I know what you're going through as far as worrying about an available doctor when the time comes. There are pre-packed kits available from EMT/Paramedic supply stores for just such an event. Number 4 in our household was due January 12, 2000. Yep, I was sure there wasn't going to be power, doctor, anything come Y2K. We kept one of these kits with me at all times. You don't need any kind of a prescription. They are easy to buy online.

Since it sounds like your re-starting, I'd highly recommend setting yourself up with some cotton diapers. You can buy "lots" of diapers on Ebay or other auction sites. Huge savings this way! Even if you only use the throw-aways you'll have them as a back-up.

Try checking out the book Tightwad Gazette from the library, or checking out the website. There's all kinds of great ideas on how to get things together (cheaply) for your baby. Even if you don't have to live the lifestyle, you'll find loads of info on how to do things the old fashioned way. Usually this is cheaper and what may end up being the only thing we have available if things get squirrely.

Ask away as far as questions. There are an incredible amount of people on this site with some really great advice.

I recommend going to Goodwill and buying up some warm clothes in bigger sizes. Babies grow so quickly. Wool mittens and snowsuits, fleece outfits etc.

So I am going to buy wipes and cloth diapers, and some rubber pant covers- variety of sizes.   Had firts ultrasound, baby was kicking away !! Thanks for the support. My husband continues to error on the side that I am just paranoid about the Bf threat-I have learned to live with it, I am just discretely stocking little by littleWink.  Thanks for all the support !  baby is here.  She is about 6 weeks old now, yes she has a diaper sensitivity and even worse a rare thyroid condition and needs med to correct it, without med could results in physical mental  *********ation ! so you better believe that i am working on a plan to stock her meds up ! Wink With all the threats of disruption in services that could occur i will never not have extra on hand... we also would have never survived the delivery without the doc lots of complications that i never had before so please take head and stock up on birth control !!! Good luck to all. Hoosiermom

Everyone calls her the "gerber baby" head full of hair with chunky cheeks and pouty lips.  Babies are soo wonderful. Going back to work and dreading it !
