The Ministry of Health is urgently investigating a possible case of community transmission of Covid-19 in Northland.

What you need to know

Health officials are investigating a suspected community case of Covid-19 in Northland.
* The 56-year-old woman tested positive after she departed the Pullman Hotel managed isolation facility in Auckland.
* She tested negative twice during her stay and was released. The origin and strain of the infection is unknown.
* She travelled to New Zealand via London and Singapore.
* Four close contacts have been identified. There are 28 locations linked to her movements.
* Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins reminded people to stay home when sick, wash hands, and use the Covid Tracer app's scanning and Bluetooth functions.
* An additional eight new cases of Covid-19 in managed isolation were reported earlier on Sunday.

DJ-From Dutch reporting I get the following. The 56 y/o woman had been traveling in the Netherlands and Spain. Ten days after a two week isolation (and two negative tests) the woman  did get symptoms and tested positive. (So 24 days after arrival in the UK-end of 2020). Her husband was not infected (?)

It is unclear the woman did get an infection in New Zealand or had a long time undiscovered infection from abroad. The NZ health services believe the woman may have a "new variant" of the virus...

DJ-Some questions;

-Is the incubation time for new variants possibly longer/different then for the old variant ?

-If the woman did get infected in New Zealand someone must have infected her. (and her husband did not catch the infection)

-What new variant does the woman have, a yet unknown one ?

-Does the virus evade testing ?

Health officials are tracking down visitors to more than 30 public places visited by a Northland woman who tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday, the first probable community case in more than two months.

Fronting a press conference in Wellington on Sunday afternoon, Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins and Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said the woman had visited cafés, restaurants and tourist spots between Auckland and Whangārei, before reporting feeling unwell, testing positive for the virus, and going into isolation at her home.

As of 7pm Sunday night, the Ministry of Health had confirmed one of these locations; a Bendon outlet shop in Whangārei.

Hipkins said the 56-year-old woman had been isolating at Auckland’s Pullman Hotel after arriving in New Zealand from Europe on December 30, but had passed both her Covid-19 tests before leaving isolation.

DJ-The woman did everything she could to not import/spread the virus to the best of her knowledge-as far as I can see. Still did catch, maybe import a new variant into NZ.

China had two new cases of the UK variant in Bejing (of all places...) even with very strict rules..This virus/variants may be very hard to contain...for the duration of this pandemic it is important to realize one person-even doing his/her best-may start a new chain/pandemic wave...

I only can hope New Zealand can keep this under control. They are aware of the urgency and risks...(could stop travel between the Islands ?) ...but this news is "frustrating" .

New Zealand (and Australia) may need to start vaccinations sooner, have less time to "enjoy" not having a major heath issue.

Sounds like she caught it at the isolation facility.

"Bloomfield said officials were working on the assumption the woman caught virus in isolation and had caught one of the more virulent strains. "

Looks like the woman did get the SA variant while staying in isolation. Did the variant spread via the airco ? I believe Australia also did see some infections in quarantine-hotels possibly linked to airco's spread ? (It is summer in Australia, New Zealand-airco's will be used...). https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/-2019-ncov-new-coronavirus/new-zealand-ad/904981-new-zealand-community-case-is-south-african-strain or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/-2019-ncov-new-coronavirus/new-zealand-ad/904981-new-zealand-community-case-is-south-african-strain

DJ-New Zealand may have been lucky the SA variant did not spread. The person in the hotel that infected the woman must have had the SA variant-what happened to that person ?

Travellers who stayed in MIQ at the Pullman Hotel from January 9-24 are being asked to self-isolate "immediately", Hipkins said.

Hipkins said of the 253 returnees that exited the hotel within the new infection window 172 had been contacted by 8am.

How did this happen in managed isolation?

The person officials believe passed on the infection to the Northland community case arrived in New Zealand on January 9.

Early information suggests transmission happened between this date and January 13.

DJ-Or is the SA variant spreading in NZ ? May people in the early stages of infection not test positive in PCR testing ? Are even stricter rules needed ?

On the news last night they said that all the CCTV footage is being analysed. The woman caught it from a man who arrived in her last couple of days at the quarantine facility and after she had her second covid test before being released. The big question is did it spread through the ventilation system.

The great thing was this woman used the Tracer app once she left isolation so all her movements were logged which will hopefully make tracing contacts much easier. We're all holding our breath to see if anyone caught it from her. So far her husband and hairdresser have tested negative, which I"m hoping is a good sign. She hasn't had close physical contact with anyone else. But the next few days will tell.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.
