Not sure if the Ministry is playing games and trying to hype Hajj, or if the media is just out in left field about how a virus acts.  Of course there won't be any MERS cases during Hajj as of yet.  The incubation period is approximately 1 week.  They need to give it a week.  The virus has shown to spread h2h when people are in close proximity, and nothing like having several million rubbing elbows together.  Whether it's transmitted by animals, or whether it's already a human cold virus, there will obviously be new cases soon.  Give it until around October 25th and we'll see.  The potential consequences of this crazy Muslim ritual for Allah is far from over.

No cases of MERS virus among haj pilgrims so far: ministry

(Reuters) - Saudi Arabia has so far recorded no cases of the deadly MERS coronavirus among pilgrims in the holy city of Mecca for the annual haj season, the Ministry of Health said on Saturday.

The death toll from the respiratory virus in the kingdom, where the strain emerged last year, has reached 51, and some health officials had feared there could be a large outbreak in a huge congregation of pilgrims from the Muslim world.

"I would like to assure everyone that were no cases of coronavirus recorded in any of the pilgrims' areas," said ministry spokesman Khalid al-Mirghalani said.

The virus, the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), can cause coughing, fever and pneumonia.

The annual haj pilgrimage will start on Monday and more than 1.6 million pilgrims so far have made it to Mecca from outside the kingdom.

"We are taking all precautions, we have labs for testing suspected cases and in case someone tests positive we will immediately isolate them to avoid any epidemic," al-Mirghalani added.

On Thursday, the ministry said two citizens had died after contracting the virus, bringing the total in the kingdom to 51.

The men aged 78 and 55 were both from Riyadh, the ministry said, however no details were given on when they had died.

While cases have been reported in people across the Middle East and in France, Germany, Italy, Tunisia and Britain, the vast majority of infections and deaths are in Saudi Arabia.

In the days leading up to the haj, the ministry launched an advisory campaign for pilgrims on how to prevent it spreading.

"We advise pilgrims to wash their hands frequently with soap and, in crowed areas, we highly advise that everyone wears a face mask to cover their nose and mouth," said Mowafak Abu Taleb, physician and head of the haj health department at a hospital in Arafat, one of the holy haj cites.

He said some 22,000 health workers, including doctors, nurses and administrative staff were on standby to help ill or injured pilgrims - around 3,000 more than previous years.

270,000 visit clinics and hospitals?

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Khaled Marghalani said the health situation of pilgrims was quite satisfying as no epidemic or quarantine cases reported and no coronavirus case recorded.
Over a week before the start of the Hajj, 232 cardiac surgeries, 44 Castro operations, 11 open heart surgeries, 737 kidney dialysis, and six deliveries have been conducted for male and female pilgrims at the state hospitals, Marghalani said.
He unveiled that health services have been offered to as many as 270,000 pilgrims who visited hospitals and medical clinics in Makkah and Al-Madinah.
Over 1,682 pilgrims were hospitalized, with most of them discharged and only 389 are still receiving treatment, Marghalani said.

I love the way the Saudi's still avoid referring to it as MERS, and keep sticking with the name Coronavirus.  Probably similar to how they avoid reporting cases when possible.

Yep, I agree. Too soon. Most people will be leaving Saudi right after the Hajj (it's a visa requirement) and before they show symptoms, and while we'll undoubtedly see more cases in the KSA - if they feel inclined to share -  the most noteworthy ones will be outside the country. Whereas spread has been pretty limited geographically (Mideast and Europe), the Hajj has the potential to move it clear around the world in a matter of a week.
Let's see what the Chinese can do with MERS if it gets there Confused

Imagine three million animals with thier throats cut. The streets run red.

Today is "The Festival of Sacrifice"

During Hajj, the sacrifice can be made in Mina or Makkah, after the stoning of the largest Jamarat. The sacrifice can be done by your agent on your behalf.

The types of animals which may be sacrificed are camels, cows, sheep and goats.

A sheep or goat can be sacrificed on behalf of only one person; whereas, a cow or camel can be shared by seven people.

The age of the goat or sheep should be at least one year, the cow two and the camel at least five.
