Well I just finished watching it.  I was disappointed because the show was billed as "What you need to know to protect your family" or some such, not "Bird Flu Pandemic 101".

While I expect that many people will be looking for further information, I just don't know if enough was stressed about THERE ARE THINGS YOU CAN DON TO LESSEN YOUR DANGER.

I  must admit, I expected more.

I watched the show today. IMO  one hour will not tell much to the public. I did get the "you will be on your own". Too bad this was not hammer home! As for Tamiflu...saving it for medical people...good idea, but will they come into work with no gloves, medicine, masks, water and no power??? Better than nothing...I have a feeling many people will chat about B/F but not react. Hope I'm wrong! Oprah should do a follow up show on prepping.

I agree Sophia. The show kinda sent a "if it hits, then your pretty much dead" message.

Better to be safe than sorry....

If looked at in a broader perspective, there may be wisdom in letting the information come out in dribs and drabs.

Those to whom you say "two plus two equals..." who stand there waiting to hear how the rest comes out, are giving a head start to those who can do the math for themselves.  Think about it this way - What happens when someone yells "FIRE!" in a crowded theater?  Everyone surges for the door at once, the exit gets clogged with bodies, some folks get trampled.  If instead, an usher goes to the people in the back row and says "I'm afraid you folks will have to come with me, there's a problem with the theater and we need to get you out of here", and they get up all nice and calm and orderly and follow him out - then he can repeat the process with each of the remaining rows.

By broaching the subject, yet not quite connecting all the dots for everyone, the show will have more of a staggered impact on the public, rather than sending everyone running for preps at the same time.  Hopefully after a few weeks there will be a few more dots connected, then a few more, until everyone will know what to do and how to do it.  Things will happen in a gradual fashion that is better absorbed by the system.

Just a thought, whether intentional or not, that is likely the impact imho.

The local news after Oprahs show said that the UN is urging nations to take the coming pandemic more seriously and to prepare for it "as if it were going to happen tomorrow" (It was abc-7 news).

Justme, I read the Nabarro(?) piece and earlier this afternoon.  I was shocked that it was posted here.  Have been busy with the Oprah catch-up but I will go dig the piece up and post it in the News room.

I think Osterholm did a great job of compacting all the basic info about bf into just a few minutes (I tivo'd through more commercials I think than minutes of actual show.)   After all, most people are starting from square one and know squat.

Main problem was that the show was too short.  It did a great job of raising the alarm, but virtually nothing about what people can actually do to prepare ahead.  She should have at least given out website links for preparedness planning info (the WHO one, CDC, etc...) so folks could find out for themselves.  And in the end, what might help us most is good old handwashing and not touching your face (if no masks, no effective drugs, no vaccine).  I don't think hand washing was even mentionned, much less what to stockpile.

The message that I got is that we better be prepared to make it 18 months and that nobody will come to our rescue.  We are basically on our own for the entire time.    People that require prescription meds are in serious trouble.   This really could come down to - Survival of the strongest.

Sure hope everybody is up for the challenge of a lifetime!

well guys... we didnt hear anything new for us , BUT,at least a lot of people that werent paying attention have been worned now! I was kind of dessapointed myself but at least I called a lot of people that I had been telling about this and alot of them did see the program and were kind of shock!! Including my mother , who had to see the Ophra show to realize I am not crazy!  i did notice that they did not put much enphasis on borders closing, luters, people attacking others in their own homes, lack of electricity and water, and specially the amount of time people should get prepared for... four to five weeks??!!! HAHAHA!!!

O.K. i let my mom speake now this is pola again... although i do realize that we as members of this board we are more aware of the dangers of the bf... i think that our expectations of the show were tooooo much!!! i think this show was intended more to show the people who dont know about the bf that there is some thing out there, that they do have to worry!!!  Oprah was simply making a statement to people, telling them to watch the news read the paper and keep in mind that the day that they least expect it someone will be contaminated and we will have this major crisis to deal with!!! It would be up to those people who watched the show to prepare themselves and thier families!!!

Well, I too just finished watching the show. I was OK with the content and
presentation. The groundwork had to be set because all we have had until
now are little more than sound bites coming from the popular media.

Yes, it was Bird Flu 101. But most people haven't taken that course. I
hope this will be a prerequisite for another show following up with more
details. If I had to guess, I would bet for about 98% of people watching,
this was "new" news, kind of a "duh" for us, but brand new to many.

I hope some of those who watched will "google" bird flu and start finding
more information.

And remember, how many hours have we researched, reach, discussed
this subject, made lists, found ourselves thinking about it at 2 am.

I fear we are such a tiny percentage of the US population, not to mention
the world population. But we have at least tried to prepare somewhat,
eveen tho' that is no guarantee we or our loved ones won't perish due to
lack of a respirator.

We are all bombarded by media information without regard to any
perspective regarding implications for the world. I think Oprah made that
point. Attention (time, money, "sexy" or informative content) doesn't
seem to be given out by the popular media with any regard of worldwide
implications for now or for the future. I am always amazed when I listen
to the BBC ( tho' they sure aren't perfect) on FM. Gee, there are lots of
other things happening in the world besides Michael Jackson walking
somewhere with his black umbrella. Who gives a s**t.

OK, off my soapbox about the sophistication, intellect, curiosity, etc. of
our friends and neighbors. It doesn't help when it takes 2 incomes to
maybe make ends meet, either. At night I am so tired I am often ready for
a good spy novel or a rousing game of Rummicub.

Whoops, forgot to jump off that soapbox. I do want to post elewhere with
a question.

Many thanks for listening, and just being there. Rocky

Hello to All !  I have been reading for a while, but after watching Oprah (for the first time), I had to make my first post.  I felt the show put more "need to prepare" on the government than the individual. As the earlier post said (and many others) individual preparedness will determine outcomes. After 9/11 and the hurricanes, why am I surprised...   Secondly, with this virus so close to H2H, it is sad to think that the general public is still at such a basic level of Avian Flu information. I am amazed that most people think Avian Flu is an "over there" thing and will never reach North America in any form.  Lastly, the show did an excellent job of showing the possible down falls in Just In Time Inventory and world trade should Avian Flu completely come to bear.  I guess I'm reminded of the 'saving for a rainy day' adage. Sadly, most think it will never rain.

I wonder if the rest of you caught something that I noticed when Dr Osterholn was talking about the mortality rate of pregnant women. He first blurted out that it was 70%, then the second time Ophrah asked him he stated 7%. My Hubby also caught this...did any of you? I also was kindo of hoping that there would be more info and at least a mentioning of web sites to visits for more info, which she usually does. But I also noticed that she did not tell her audience which she ALWAYS does about where to find her website for questions or transcripts. Which leads me to strongly believe that TPTB are invovled and are pressuring her to water the content down to prevent panic. But there is a way to get around this if we think...just go to her web-site now and start posting our web site and the others for more info . That way even though her hands are tied...ours aren't!

For a person who has never heard anything about "bird flu" I think the show was very enlightening.   My favorite part was Oprah questioning why the nightly news doesn't report the seriousness and has only one minute blimps of info.   I wish they would have went into more about how much food and water to stockpile.  But all in all I think they did a good job because they had a lot to cover in an hour.  It was good that they had many different people who are in the know warning about the pandemic.  That way someone would think it was all Dr. O's opinion.

I let people know to watch.  I called my sister and she said she was too busy!  I hope this will  be the first of many broadcasts.

I didn't get to see the show, but am not suprised about what oue members think of it. It's kinda like reading Ned's first reader to a six grader.
We are informed, sometimes misinformed, but we are more concerned than average Joe about this subject.
We should have anticipated a certain level of disapointment about the show. Oprah is damn good, but she can't pack night after night of research and discussion in a forty five minute show.

I have just joined the site today, hello to all of you.  Watched Oprah's show this afternoon.  Ironically, my husband is sick in bed with the flu and he said "Oprah Winfrey is doing a show on bird flu!"  It has been about a year since I started being interested in the bird flu, and did lots of research on the internet, much to the amusement of my husband and just about anybody else I brought the subject up to!  Finally, I think people are going to have to realise that this is not something that is just going to go away.  We are faced with the reality that there will be a terrible flu (or some other disease) outbreak some time in the near or distant future and we are not going to be able to simply ignore it.  However, I don't think that enough information was given out on the show and a lot of people are going to be panicked and confused about what to do when in reality it is very simple.  Just stockpile (now, not just before the outbreak hits) non perishable food and emergency supplies and if it does hit the fan, just wait it out.  It isn't worth risking your health going out for any circumstances.  I actually did start stockpiling tinned food and condensed milk a few months ago, but then I started to feel that maybe I was worrying unnecessarily; I ended up eating the food that I had put aside for the possible quarantine instead of going to the supermarket!!

I think he said the overall death rate was 7%.  I distinctly remember hearing him say the pregnant mortality rate was 55%.

I offered to take notes and post what I heard on the show but I think you all have done a good job of sumarizing the show.  There are two things I SPECIFICALLY heard and remember.  One of which NO ONE has mentioned here.

1st - Mike Levitt from the Dept of Health and Human Services said you can expect to BE ON YOUR OWN for this.

2nd and MOST important - those surgical masks that DO NOT SEAL ON YOUR FACE are USELESS.

I'm not afraid, I'm paranoid. Dont talk too loud, they are listening.

The scariest thing I learned (it was news to me) is that the water treatment plants only have about 7 - 14 days of chemicals to treat the water.  Isn't that a pleasant piece of information!  Guess I'm going to the pool supply store for Bruss's suggested dry clorine whatcha call-it.

i remember the death of pregnant women in 1918 to have been stated at 50% also.  And the water treatment supply of clorine at 7 days, so don't expect to ever get any safe tap water until it's all over.  Get some clorox.

Oprah convinced everybody I know too.   However, a lot of my family and friends had already begun stockpiling.    I'm not easy to argue with.   I don't have time for it.    Needless to say, everybody I know began early, even though they thought it was crazy at the time.

It's great to hear that at least this hit home with some of the relatives and friends! So maybe her show was not all in vain after all. I have a tendency to agree with bruss about how the news is going to increase its frequency in stages to prevent panic though. I guess I was hoping for more.

I watched with my Mom, who thinks Im nuts. I FORCED her to sit though it and take in all the information. After it was over, she said "Yeah, and......" She was NOT impressed or scared , at all!!! She said she has heard stuff like this her entire life, and she said it always turns out to be alot of fuss over nothing!

I made my husband watch Oprah's show and Bird Flu-A Breath Away and afterwards all he could say was that they just keep repeating the same old stuff and he doesn't think anything will happen either.  I, however, am making him help me stockpile- just by asking him to pick up a few extras when I send him to any store with a list.  He doesn't even realize (most of the time) that I'm hiding things away in all of the cupboards and closets. HAHAHA
