Here's a movie that you may want to recommend for people to watch.
Pandemic: Bird Flu
I believe it airs tomorrow night at 9:00pm. Click here for the schedule

No, I'm afraid I can't. I received a couple of emails asking me to post the link on here, but I'm not sure when I will get the chance to watch it myself.

The Science Channel Pandemic: Bird Flu
These were the listing times for my area (central time zone) Sun Oct 7 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM and 11:00 PM - 1:00 AM Mon Oct 8 3:00 AM -5:00 AM and 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM The Science Channel had a lot of preview ads with short segments that looked alot like the footage that was in the Google Video Pandemic (a possible look at the future) which was 1 hour 28 minutes. Here is the link for that Google video. I thought that it was a convincing "eye opener" for skeptical people. I can let you know, after I see The Science Channel version, how much common video was in both presentations. Mike-Hz |

I never personally saw Fatal Contact, but this is not the same movie. From what I was told, it should be a new one.

I just looked at the schedule and the last showing is Monday morning 10:00am. If you really want to watch it, you can call your cable company first thing Monday morning and order the Science Channel. It probably costs around $2.00 per month. |

This is not exactly a bird flu movie- but When the Wind Blows (the animated UK 80's movie) is an interesting movie about a couple that "trust the government" and does just what it says to prepare for a nuclear event and then waits and waits for the government to do their promised part. The bottom line is there may not be a "functioning government" if things get bad- so you better prepare for both the event and the time after.
worth seeing if you can find it- but it hard to find in the US but you can find it in UK. |

Penham - It sounds like you might not get a chance to see this one. Although I'm sure you will see lots of opinions being posted about it... Looks like I might be able to watch it after all.

This is the same movie available online on Google videos. Someone on another thread recommended this BBC program which is half documentary, half dramatization at 128 minutes in length. It is a good overview of the pandemic situation. If you can't catch the Science Channel, watch it online and miss the ads.

Ironically enough, the movie has the final mutation as being when the virus can infect the upper resp. tract.

Well I got preps on hand. But now thinking I need more. And the timing of this movie makes one wonder whats next.
As hard as we work at trying to tell people about the bird flu pandemic I am beginning to wonder even after they have watched this movie. That some of my family need a boot in the can. Literally to knock some sense in them. Cause this movie was well informed and they are just not on the same page as we are. So on that note I have decided to just worry about myself and those preppers here who are truly understanding the real picture. Cause some of my family are making me feel like im a bother, or a nusense. And I don't have time to waste if they don't care. PrepGirl Do some of you have the same feelings as I or am I becoming heartless? |

I don't think you are becoming heartless, it is just really difficult to maintain the kind of focus prepping and teaching others really entails. I work in a school, we have had three meeting about PanFlu because the state government requires every school to have a plan. The next day, I was essentially laughed out of the room because I took it seriously, and wanted to discuss it further.

Prepgirl, don't even worry about it. We're on Noah's ark with our preps and they get to starve. Look at this way - if we're wrong, we're out of a couple hundred bucks and we're still alive. If we're right, we'll survive. So either way we win, but for those who don't prep they're dead. I'll take those odds myself.
When the time comes, don't panic. Calm yourself down and think. We've covered multiple scenarios here, that's why I created the End of the World Scenarios room to address variations that could occur. Once you think and form a plan everything will go more smoothly. You're a smart lady, I've never seen anything wrong with your prepping. Barring infection, you have an awesome chance of making it. Don't worry about what they say - in fact, drop the prepping conversation altogether. The govt told us to stockpile after Katrina so don't humor or help those who are too lazy to ensure their own survival. Barring riots, your family will survive and you will have years of preps at the local stores until you figure out your ultimate destination. I've chosen a town on the washington peninsula (sp) known for its fishing. Use a net and you'll have plenty of meat, especially five to eight years from now as the fish population rebounds from no more commercial fishing. I bet four or five tablespoons of salt water will give you the salt intake you need to survive daily. |

I think the brine from salt water would corrode or otherwise damage a coffee maker if you tried to purify water that way (from ocean water). Anybody know whether it will for sure?

Well, using the philosophy that no good deed goes unpunished.....I am back again....
The documentary presented on Discovery Science Channel was one of the best made to date. It tracked the history of the virus from its emergence in China in 1997 to today. It was VERY accurate in its dipiction of the virus and the experts pulled NO punches in describing the potentials. Dr. Greg Poland of the Mayo Research Clinc in MN did an outstanding job of recounting the sinister nature of the "bug". There was a Scottish that actually said that H5N1 was and "evil" virus. Talked about WHO and their containment response plan. Basically, they said that it would be ineffectual. Touched on Tamiflu and its viability. Had actors representing a couple in Florida and their efforts to "Prep" for an outbreak. VERY well done. They weren't wild-eyed crazies or TEOWAKI idiots. This segue into potential societal impacts was pretty well done. The show went into great detail about society's response to an outbreak. For me, as a Bird Flu Prep professional, the highlight of the show was the linkage of the 1918 Spanish influenza (H1N1) outbreak to the 1917 to 1923 outbreak to Encephalitis Lethargica E/L. The point was made that H1N1 was as systemically pathogenic and had the ability to infect beyond the repiratory tract. Forensic Virologists are now examining the possibility that E/L was the result of an H1N1 brain infection. Scary. I copied the show off on my dvr and will be editing the commercials and such out. I will post whether or not I will be able to share on this forum. Randy |

I'm in the very same boat here as I am sure thousands are;( But...I recorded the movie, and will burn dvd copies off to the "stubborn ones"...then Nothing more I can do...alls we can do is what we can, if some refuse to accept it..then...it's on their own shoulders...not mine, not yours. I'm usualy not so hard hearted? But I cannot feed some 120 relatives and friends for however long. I'm not rich by no means, but have a good stock put away. Keep stocking and keep praying. |

saw the movie last night and i thought it was interesting. for one thing it was made in 2007 so it was new.
it portrayed how a pandemic flu would likely happen. one of the storylines was your typical usa businessman in asia, flys home, infecting many others on board, etc,, there were other actors and other side stories too and they even showed a prepper and his wife in fla i believe,,and their preps. i was half expecting for our board to get a plug in but no such luck. what i found fascinating and something i had never heard of was the idea that a disease never before or after seen,, was a direct result of the 1918 pandemic flu. it presented similar to the disease robert di niro's character had in the movie "awakenings" with robin williams about the man who was in a vegetative state for 25 years then given a drug and came out of it,,tragically though, only temporarily. they said that this "sleeping disease" showed up about 5 years after the 1918 flu and the only place on earth it didn't appear was the only place on earth where the 1918 flu didn't reach,,i think it was bornea. and that was due to a successful effort to shut down bornea's borders. anyway,,,they called it a sleeping disease but it also was characterized by what looked like painfully contorted muscle spasms in the patients, the patient was in a coma state,,yet you could raise his arm,,and he would hold it raised even when the drs. let go. drs and scientists assert that the avian flu went from the lungs to the brain and wreaked havoc there as well,,,years AFTER patients had recovered from the flu. really scary to me! |
