New York state health officials alerted Rockland County residents about a confirmed polio case on Thursday. The last naturally occurring case of polio in the U.S. was in 1979. Health officials believe this case might have originated from outside the U.S., which would be the first since 2013.

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and the Rockland County Department of Health advised hospitals in the state to be extra vigilant for additional cases. Polio is a viral disease and once the nation's most feared sickness in the 1950s, which caused neurological symptoms, paralysis, or death and has been eradicated since 1979.

NYSDOH believes the infected person (still no details about the individual's age or if they traveled outside of the country) has a vaccine-derived strain of the virus and got it from someone outside the country. The person is also unvaccinated against polio, NYTimes confirmed.

In this case, sequencing performed by the Wadsworth Center – NYSDOH's public health laboratory – and confirmed by CDC showed revertant polio Sabin type 2 virus. This is indicative of a transmission chain from an individual who received the oral polio vaccine (OPV), which is no longer authorized or administered in the U.S., where only the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) has been given since 2000. This suggests that the virus may have originated in a location outside of the U.S. where OPV is administered, since revertant strains cannot emerge from inactivated vaccines. - NYSDOH

Transmission of the virus appears to be through vaccine shedding. The vaccine in question is the oral polio vaccine (OPV), an attenuated (or "live virus") vaccine given to people outside of the US. People who are given active vaccines have the tendency to shed the virus and infect others.

Parts of the world where OPV is administered are mainly developing countries, such as Afghanistan and Pakistan, and ones in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has been a big driver of polio vaccine funding. But a 2019 article from Science indicates the decades-long eradication campaign "suffered major setbacks."

Since 2000, only inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) has been given to U.S. children, and since it's inactive or dead, there's no risk of shedding.

NYSDOH is now requesting those who are "vaccinated but at risk of exposure" to get a "booster."

Add polio boosters to the expanding listing of vaccines the government is trying to force into the bodies of Americans, including COVID boosters and ones for Monkeypox.

DJ (ZH misreporting, monkeypox vaccines only for very limited groups so far, polio vaccines also limited group in specific region).

NEW YORK (AP) — An unvaccinated young adult from New York recently contracted polio, the first U.S. case in nearly a decade, health officials said Thursday.

Officials said the patient, who lives in Rockland County, had developed paralysis. The person developed symptoms a month ago and did not recently travel outside the country, county health officials said.

It appears the patient had a vaccine-derived strain of the virus, perhaps from someone who got live vaccine — available in other countries, but not the U.S. — and spread it, officials said.

The person is no longer deemed contagious, but investigators are trying to figure out how the infection occurred and whether other people may have been exposed to the virus.

Most Americans are vaccinated against polio, but unvaccinated people may be at risk, said Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert. Health officials scheduled vaccination clinics nearby for Friday and Monday, and encouraged anyone who has not been vaccinated to get the shots.

“We want shots in the arms of those who need it,” she said at a Thursday press conference announcing the case.

Polio was once one of the nation’s most feared diseases, with annual outbreaks causing thousands of cases of paralysis — many of them in children.

Rarely, travelers have brought polio infections into the U.S. The last such case was in 2013, when a 7-month-old who had recently moved to the U.S. from India was diagnosed in San Antonio, Texas, according the federal health officials. That child also had the type of polio found in the live form of vaccine used in other countries.

There are two types of polio vaccines. The U.S. and many other countries use shots made with an inactivated version of the virus. But some countries where polio has been more of a recent threat use a weakened live virus that is given to children as drops in the mouth. In rare instances, the weakened virus can mutate into a form capable of sparking new outbreaks.

U.S. children are still routinely vaccinated against polio with the inactivated vaccine. Federal officials recommend four doses: to be given at 2 months of age; 4 months; at 6 to 18 months; and at age 4 through 6 years. Some states require only three doses.

According to the CDC’s most recent childhood vaccination data, about 93% of 2-year-olds had received at least three doses of polio vaccine.

Polio spreads mostly from person to person or through contaminated water. It can infect a person’s spinal cord, causing paralysis and possibly permanent disability and death. The disease mostly affects children.

Polio is endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan, although numerous countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia have also reported cases in recent years.

Rockland County, in New York City’s northern suburbs, has been a center of vaccine resistance in recent years. A 2018-2019 measles outbreak there infected 312 people.

Last month, health officials in Britain warned parents to make sure children have been vaccinated because the polio virus had been found in London sewage samples. No cases of paralysis were reported.

DJ, My non-expert impression is this most likely is an isolated case....Still given the decrease of immunity after CoViD infection (and maybe also after CoViD vaccination...?) ANY infectious disease showing up is alarming ! London-UK finding polio in the sewage a few months back...

poliovirus, the causative agent of polio (also known as poliomyelitis), is a serotype of the species Enterovirus C, in the family of Picornaviridae.[1] There are three poliovirus serotypes: types 1, 2, and 3.

Poliovirus is composed of an RNA genome and a protein capsid. The genome is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA (+ssRNA) genome that is about 7500 nucleotides long.[2] The viral particle is about 30 nm in diameter with icosahedral symmetry. Because of its short genome and its simple composition—only RNA and a nonenveloped icosahedral protein coat that encapsulates it—poliovirus is widely regarded as the simplest significant virus.

SARS-CoV-2 has a linear, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA genome about 30,000 bases long.[104] Its genome has a bias against cytosine (C) and guanine (G) nucleotides, like other coronaviruses.[151] The genome has the highest composition of U (32.2%), followed by A (29.9%), and a similar composition of G (19.6%) and C (18.3%)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkeypox_virus or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkeypox_virus ;

Monkeypox virus (MPVMPXV, or hMPXV) is a species of double-stranded DNA virus which causes monkeypox in humans and other animals. It belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus in the family Poxviridae. Monkeypox virus is one of the human orthopoxvirus along with variola (VARV), cowpox (CPX), and vaccinia (VACV) viruses. It is not a direct ancestor to, nor a direct descendant of, the variola virus, which causes smallpox. Monkeypox is similar to smallpox, but with a milder rash and lower mortality rate

For decades now there has been a suppressed line of enquiry into polio suggesting that rather than being a disease, polio is a toxic paralysis caused by multiple vaccines and the reason it shows up mainly in children is that children do not have the immune capacity to deal with the levels of toxins being injected into them.

Read The Poisoned Needle by Eleanor McBean. 1957. A fascinating book about vaccines and the suppressed facts about them.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

NEW: We have additional details about that unvaccinated Rockland County, N.Y. man diagnosed with polio. He is 20, traveled to Poland and Hungary earlier this year, and having difficulty walking. My story w

link; https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2022/07/21/polio-rockland-county-unvaccinated/ or https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2022/07/21/polio-rockland-county-unvaccinated/ ;

The first U.S. case of polio in nearly a decade has been confirmed in an unvaccinated individual in Rockland County, N.Y., local and state health officials announced Thursday.

While the origins of the case are still being investigated, the 20-year-old man had traveled to Poland and Hungary this year and was hospitalized in June, according to a public health official close to the investigation who was not authorized to speak on the record. He was initially diagnosed with a possible case of acute flaccid myelitis, caused by inflammation of the spinal cord that results in severe muscle weakness and paralysis. But subsequent testing detected a type of polio that indicates transmission from outside the United States, according to a joint alert Thursday from the New York State Health Department and Rockland County.

The patient has since been discharged and living at his parents’ home with his wife. He is able to stand, but is having difficulty walking, the official said.

-

Officials did not elaborate on why the patient is no longer contagious. But he sought treatment at a hospital in New York City around June 20, the official said. Patients are most contagious during the first two weeks of illness, said Thomas Giordano, chief of infectious diseases at Baylor College of Medicine.

Polio is a very contagious, life-threatening viral disease that causes permanent paralysis in people who are not fully vaccinated in about 5 out of every 1,000 cases. Most of the U.S. population has protection against the disease because they were vaccinated during childhood. But in areas with low vaccination coverage, such as the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Rockland County, people who are not vaccinated are at high risk. There is no treatment for polio, but vaccination prevents the disease.

-

Up to 95 percent of people infected with polio have no symptoms but can still be contagious. About 4 to 5 percent of infected people have minor symptoms such as fever, muscle weakness, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Symptoms can take up to 30 days to appear. One to 2 percent of infected people develop severe muscle pain and stiffness in the neck and back. Less than 1 percent of polio infections result in paralysis.

The Rockland County man lives in a community that has historically been under-vaccinated and was the epicenter of the measles outbreak in 2019, according to public health officials who spoke on the condition on anonymity.

In this case, genetic sequencing performed by the Wadsworth Center — New York state’s public health laboratory — and confirmed by the CDC, showed a type of polio virus that indicates transmission from someone who received the oral polio vaccine, according to Thursday’s alert.

DJ Unvaccinated against polio that means I think...more info on CoViD(vaccination) status (also in monkeypox) would be more then welcome !

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockland_County,_New_York or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockland_County,_New_York ;

Rockland County is the smallest county by area in New York outside New York City. It comprises five towns and nineteen incorporated villages, with numerous unincorporated villages (sixteen) and hamlets. Rockland County is designated as a Preserve America Community, and nearly a third of the county's area is parkland. The county has the largest Jewish population percentage of any U.S. county, at 31.4%, or 90,000 residents.[5] Rockland also ranked 31st on the list of highest-income counties by median household income in the United States, with a median household income of $82,534 according to the 2010 census.

The detected strain can sometimes cause severe disease in people who are not vaccinated against polio

By Nicoletta LaneseLiveScience on June 23, 2022

... In London, health officials detected several closely-related polioviruses in sewage samples collected between February and May. Among these they found vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2), the most common type of vaccine-derived poliovirus, per the GPEI. VDPV2 can rarely cause severe illness and paralysis in those who are not fully vaccinated, according to the UKHSA.

The presence of VDPV2 hints that the poliovirus may be spreading among “closely-linked individuals in North and East London,” who are now shedding virus in their stool, the statement reads. So far, the virus has only been detected in sewage and no cases of paralysis have been reported.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/a...fficials-warn/

so SEVERAL London UK sewage samples had polio-virus-particles (vaccine linked)....from february to at least may this year...

DJ-Certain groups run higher risks for spread. The more people share a house-three generations-the higher the risk. Also NOT seeking vaccines/medical care (out of poverty, religion) does increase risks.

DJ-My view is moving towards it is very likely there is limited spread now in both UK and US (London/New York) of polio....Sewage samples may be helpfull in detection of possible further spread. Recently vaccinated (oral) with live polio-virus-particles may also show up in such samples...
