All of you here need to go find a good First aid course. My I suggest you take one designed for proffessionals. Without basic knowledge treating someone who is gravely ill is going to be at the very least frustrating. If your planning on anything more than the very basics may I suggest that you get a book that teaches basic medical terminology, at least then you will be able to read medical literature and understand what is being said. The medical field has its own language. Ive have seen some posts that scare me although the motives are noble. Some things just arent a good idea [such as trying to vent a pt at home] Even O2 administered wrong or at the wrong amt. could be very harmful. If your planning on these types of interventions at home educate yourself, Procedures can be learned for the most part by anyone its the monitoring the what when and how much and what to do ifs that are the bugabos. Your going to have to understand at least the basics Knowledge is the greatest prep |

Any local community college will have a course
in First Aid, but what you should take if you want to be prepared is
the EMT-1 or -2 course. You can take this as far as Paramedic,
but that may be overkill for most of you. Have a printed medical history of every person in your party. ------------- Don't be afraid to be afraid; it keeps you on your toes. |

Just for quick reference in basic first aid, I would recommend the American Red Cross Store...they have two small booklets "first Aid and Emergency Preparedness: A Quick Reference" and "First Aid Fast". There is a small fee for each, but I have pruchassed them for the disaster kits for family and friends and those that had zero training found them helpful.
For an all inclusive mecical guide for the lay person, I would recommend "Where There is No Doctor: A Village Health Care Handbook" its covers a whole spectrum of stuff, but much of it is very useful when routine medical systems have been disrupted. Covers everything from stiches to child birth.
Finally, somewhere on the forum is an electronic article published by an MD that talks specifically about how to care for a person at home that comes down with influenza. Many folks have printed that out. Might have to poke around a bit...

I could do no better than the above recomendations. Procedures are easily learned its the assesment that is vital Knowing what certian signs and symtoms mean and how to recignise them is essential. |

I agree with Diane. Mereck Manuals are the best. I find them easy to understand and you don't have to have a medical dictionary with you to understand the text.
I have found old medical books at the Salvation Army in Bloomington, Indiana. Docotor's and med students donate their old books. They have alot of info in them and its great to buy a $100.00 back for a fifty cents!!
