I have a friend that lives in Southern Minnesota outside the town of Goodhue. It's a farming community and the next nearest neighbor is about a mile up the road. His dog will start barking the moment anyone starts up the half mile driveway and I have yet to figure out how she knows when someone's on their way there.

 

City people, a small to medium dog is probably ideal. The little yapper dogs especially as they'll get you up in a hurry if they see something's amiss.

 

Police and caution tape I would have to say is more of an attractant than a deterrent. Anytime I have had a crime scene set up I had to deal with just about every idiot possible either walking through aimlessly or sneaking in to get a better look. If there is a breakdown of society (Very possible after the last couple pieces of weirdness coming out of the President) you definately do not want to put up police tape as that just means there's something there you want to protect but are too lazy to. Remember the lower the profile, the better. You don't want to attract any undue attention to your doings.

 

Barbed wire works great, especially in concert with barking dog. I particularly like concertina wire which can be extremely useful. The military uses it because it's extremely difficult to cut through, is durable and if someone gets caught up in it not only makes all kinds of noise getting un-caught but will definately injure a tresspasser. You don't have to make the coils like they do here in the desert, but a little looping is great. At night barbed wire can be extremely effective! That's also where the dog comes in...

I guess I don't really know what you mean by, "Small Animal Traps" and "Tactical Lighting." I'm not worried about small animals all that much aside from the random raccoon or squirrel.

 

If you mean getting a small and affordable nightvision device, many of these have drastically come down in price of late and are affordable now. Even a Generation 1 nightvision device is a massive advantage over no nightvision capability. I bought a couple Nightvision toys from Toys R Us for some of my brother's litter and surprisingly those damn things work! The kids can see as clear as day in total darkness. The cat didn't think it was all that funny to have zero darkness advantage against five year olds at all.

 

Anyway, even a Gen one or two NV monocular is a significant advantage. Try one out and you'll see for yourself how dramatic it really is.
