If h2h breaks out in DC it will be like New Orleans during Katrina in a second. Same demographics x 4. Oh well who needs DC anyway?

We are all here to help protect the people we care about. We are all on the Titanic, but there are not enough life rafts for everyone. I wish there were more, but that is not in my control.

I think that is why we will see as much of a problem with civil unrest as we will see with the actual bird flu illness.

People will do anything they can to get on those final couple of life rafts - to the point where they will probably collapse from too many people getting into them.  The panic doesn't start at the very beginning when people are getting in the first half to three quarters of the boats, it is when they realize there are not enough for everyone that the panic and chaos will take over.

In this situation it will be when there is lack of food, lack of hospital services, police protection, and fire protection (due to staff being ill or not coming in to work), and lack of respect for rule of law and authority.  Sometimes good people will do things they wouldn't normally ever dream of doing if they think it will help themselves or their family survive.  For others, they will do things because they feel they will not get caught.

Ah, heck. Am first to admit the downfalls of DC.  Part of me thinks DC will be in big, big trouble (again). The other part thinks (hopes) that maybe they'll get their act together and try to protect the capitol.... Will be an interesting ride that's for sure..... -- Libby

An epidemic erodes social cohesiveness because the source of your danger
is your fellow human beings, the source of your danger is your wife,
children, parents and so on. So, if an epidemic goes on long enough, and
the bodies start to pile up and nobody can dig graves fast enough to put the
people into them, then morality does start to break down.

Forgotten Pandemic"

been to DC and loved it. Very educated and sophistocated society. also alot of people depending on government assistance.

The ones in Katrina here in New Orleans who waited for the government were the ones in trouble.

Not because the assistance came but because it came later that they thought it would.

Here is an example of what honest people will do to survive.  When my dad was in the Coast Guard during WWII, he was stationed at some remote island east of N. or S. Carolina, I can't remember which one.  My mom was with him.  They ran out of food. ration stamps and mom was literally starving.  My dad was so desperate to get food for my mom that he went into a small store and shoplifted for the ONLY time in his life.  I don't think he ever got over it.  He paid it forward, years later when he owned his own feed store and had a lot of poor customers.  He gave away so much livestock food to the poor that it was just amazing.

If you remember Corn, there were shots fired in New Orleans while the people were waiting for assistance.  The gangs were having fun looting and running around in vehicles with guns in full view.  That was one of the reasons why the red cross and other organizations were not allowed to go in right away.  There were valid concerns that they might be hurt.  Armed guards were needed for cover fire to remove people from the hospitals.  I hope this is not the same situation if h2h occurs and people trying to drive food to grocery store ditribution centers are attacked and/or looted enroute.  If this does occur, I can guarantee you that we will not have drivers shipping much of anything.  It will end up being the military with armed guards distributing things.

whoever does what they will risk getting the virus and we shouldn't have to worry about them for long.
