ATLANTA, Georgia -- The number of states reporting widespread flu activity jumped to 10 this week, up from just four last week, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Widespread flu has been seen in Alabama, Alaska, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming, according to the CDC's latest weekly flu advisory report, which covers the week ending December 21.

The week before, just Alabama, Louisiana, New York and Texas reported widespread flu. According to the CDC, "widespread" means that more than half of the state's geographic regions, such as counties or parishes, are reporting flu cases.

CNN reports that six states, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas, reported a high number of outpatient doctor's visits for flu-like symptoms.

If you check Google flu trends you'll notice almost every state is showing high-intense flu across the nation.
