SALT LAKE CITY — Many Utahns are currently coughing, achy and weak. Flu season is in full swing, and doctors say within the past few weeks they've seen a spike in cases in Utah.

"We're seeing children with the flu, the elderly with the flu. People over 65 are at higher risk and children under the age of 2 are at higher risk of complications of the flu," said Adams Balls, Riverton Hospital Health.
..

"Nearly 10 percent of our adult cases were vaccinated prior to being hospitalized. Nearly half of our pediatric patients were vaccinated prior to being hospitalized," said Utah Department of Health representative, David Jackson.

Anniesmom, thank you for the stats on people who had the flu shot. I wonder if these people had the shot more than 2 weeks? It is sad that the children have such a high rate of vaccination and such serious illness.

My grand mother had a saying about death, "The old must the young may." Sad but true!

Hi Flumom,

The article doesn't say, that would be interesting to know.  Some things I read sounds like the shot is a match though, do you think there are two versions of swine flu going around?

I am new here, I was searching flu because a friend of a friend is hospitalized with the flu.  She's in bad shape on a lung machine.

Yes, it seems to be a match but shot is only 60% effective. I believe there is only one version going around but there are some here that will be able to tell you better. Just put up a question and Med or someone else will answer. People here are very nice, knowledgeable, and kind.

Sorry about your friend. If she is on a ventilator she must be pretty bad I wish her well. Many do come out of it even after a vent.   This H1N1 is a nasty actor and I am not sure why.

Please keep contact with us with the outcome of your friend because it helps us all know how bad things are getting and give out warnings if needed.

Anniesmom, the flu shot seems to be effective, but it takes it up to two weeks to get immune to the flu,if it does then. This flu bug is changing just a little bit almost everyday. Try to get some Relenza for you and your family to give the flu shot time to work and get the flu shot NOW. As for your friend who is on life support,Relenza might help her to,but pray for her. Anniesmom.

Ask the doctors to treat with Relenza. Its an inhaled drug which acts in a similar way to Tamiflu.

Doctors are still using Tamiflu, but is found to be nearly useless against some recent strains of N1H1.

If your friend is on breathing machines it maybe too late to treat.

I think what cobber means is that antivirals like Tamiflu and Relenza typically only work if given within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. Wouldn't want you to think we're writing your friend off - cobber's absolutely right in describing the way that particular class of medications work.
Our thoughts are with your friend, and I hope to hear that she made a full recovery.

I'm not sure what medications she is on, she's a friend of a friend so I don't have much info.  My friend posted today that her numbers are looking better today and they are bringing her in/out of "sleep" (I'm guessing medically induced coma) so that's good news.

I have Tamiflu and Relenza on hand thanks to my wonderful doc, and Vitamin D3, Sambucol, Airborne, Oregano Oil and NAC in my flu preps.

From reading other forums, what seems to be worrisome about this flu is the unusual symptoms.  I'm reading about people having severe muscle pains, kidney problems, neck pain and other things.  I hope people don't ignore other symptoms thinking pneumonia is the only complication.

Sounds like you may like to get some homeopathic gelsemium and eupatorium. Both of those remedies can be very effective flr body aches and helpibg the body deal with severe flu. If you know a homeopath get a 200cvpotency of each and take every 2 hours while the symptoms are severe. It can help amazingly

My friend's friend I posted about earlier in this thread, passed away today of H1N1 (double pneumonia).  She was on ECMO as well.  My friend posted yesterday that doctors were running out of options for her yesterday and she had developed an infection as well (not sure where).  That's all the detail I have except she was at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, and was middle aged.

My apologies, didn't mean to come off that rude. I was referring to the statement about the Antichrist coming and this is a man made virus, etc.

Anniesmom- We're all sorry for your friends loss and hope you and your friend are OK.

Jade4now_I kinda agree with Kyle. I don't come here for sermons. If eveyone here starts talking religion it will really muddy the water. I don't know about anyone else but I don't miss Aurora, I don't have time to sift through it.
