I am worried once H5N1 hits the US what my plans will be with my three cats.  My two older cats don't really care about going out but my younger cats darts out the door every given chance.

My cat "Grace" loves to hung birds and then plants them on our doorstep.  She climbs the haybales in our barn to get to the top and then pounces on the birds.

I have 9 cats and 3 dogs. They are family. We are all in this together. They stay regardless of any official advice to the contrary. I have stocked up on their food and they will quarantine in the house with me.

To all those people who are thinking of getting rid of their pets, i have only one question to ask

would you get rid of your children if you thought they may get the BF?

IMO there is no difference between any form of life. Even Jesus said 'Whatsoever you do for another you do for me' or very close to that.  He did not say only humans. he meant everything

We have two cats, they are mostly DH cats, the two dogs are mostly mine.  The cats don't usually show much interest in going outside.  they will stand at the Garage door and look out. that is about it.

I have two babies, well the one you can see in my avatar is Coco(fixed) is 3 in Sept, and we  also  have a 1 year, male (fixed) who is also Siamese.  I've had Siamese all my life and wouldn't live without one.

His birthday was last weekend and my daughter and son-in-law, and Baby Granddaughter were here for part of the week.  So they decided to buy dessert one nite.  They had Safe way put Happy Birthday Sully on it as a joke, well when they went to pay her she asked if Sully was a little boy, kids laughed and said Yes.

So on his birthday we have a picture of him in my husband's arms, blowing out a candle.   I forgot mine don't go outside except on leash.

We also have an African Grey Parrot and a miniature Pincher

I have one cat, and she's mainly indoors during the winter, so she's used to staying in right now.  She likes to go out with us to do the gardening though, so spring and summer could be a problem.  She's just going to have to stay in all the time when bird flu gets here.  There is no other way to keep her.

We have one cat and 4 dogs-they are all outdoors during the day and indoors during rainy/cold weather or at night. sleep on our couch,, chairs and bed. the dogs are getting a kennel built, or else I would just walk dogs all day when it hits here-the cat will have to be retrained. She cries now by the door to get outin the morning, but she'll have to readjust -justlike the rest of the family.

worrywart, good for you,  she'll probably test your Patience before this is all over.  Your doing the right thing.

Do you know that the average outdoor cat age is 7 years, whereas the average indoor cat is 18, we have had two Siamese that lived 21 & 22 years old.

Cars, dogs, people, and now they have to fear birds too, world is upside down. IMO

Reading this makes me glad that my pup will only be about 20 lbs when she is full grown...I have a cat that size(the Ole cat)...lol....

The ole cat loves to go outside...but I have a screened in back deck she may have to learn to live with just that..and she would have to share with the pup...our kitten has only gone as far as the patio door to the back deck..so i think she would be ok with quarantine....

Siameselade-the cat IS testing me now   When I don't jump out of bed in the morning when the alarm rings, she jumps on my face and starts pouding without mercy. If i still don't get up, she'll gather up the dogs for team work-she'll open the inside screendoor with her claws, then the 4 dogs throw themselves against the outside door and all 5 of them go running, laughing at me
All those critters are expensive when it comes to stocking up food for them, but i could not get myself to get rid of them. What the heck-we can always macaroni and cheese while they feast!!

He's been an indoor cat.  I live in the center of a large city and it's just not safe to let your cats roam around here.  I'll not have to worry about him dragging in the BF.  I have an 2nd story apartment in a four-plex, with huge windows on the north side, 4' wide and 6' tall.  he spends quite a bit of time watching the birds in the trees because the branches of the trees come within a few feet of the windows.  It's like TV for cats, LOL.

My other cat will do just about anything to sqeeze out the door when possible. For instance the UPS man coming to the door. Arrgh! Any ideas on making him a happier indoor cat would be gladly accepted.

I have one Siamese, a 3 yr old, who is afraid to go out.  The younger one he's just turned 1, he tries to sneak out with our little dog.

I have actually hit him for it.  I don't normally discipline them, will speak to them when they're bugging the bird, but that's it.

Anyhow the younger one starts bugging my hubby about 5 am to get up.  As he's older I think it's around 6 now. Hubby has given up complaining to me as cats can do no wrong. Besides before we got married I told him the Siamese would be with me forever. Different cats but still 2 Siamese. Hubby complains somtimes, wait til he gets home tonite they broke his piggy bank and he's had it a long time. Where did the rest of the thread go?? Okay page 2. Somebody should have told me, I thought I was talking to myself.

I have one outdoor cat that likes to come in to visit everyday. Then I have one adult cat that goes outside everytime he feels like it. I had tried to stop this forever but dang near killed myself trying to keep him inside. Then on top of the two adults we have two 8 week old kittens. So we have four cats total.

I wish I could figure out a way to train them to stay away from the door when I open it. I've used a spray bottle and that doesn't work. Anyone have any ideas? I'd really like to keep the indoor cats safe. I don't know if I could ever get the outdoor cat to stay inside. He's a very tempermental tom cat.

WE have eight cats. There are three siamese and  three strays that we took in - they are all inside. We also have a feline leukemia positive cat that stays in a separate part of our house.

The last cat is an outside cat to keep the mice out of the airconditioning hoses of our van. She is often in our garage and she'll have to stay there during bf.

try banging together to pot lids, they don't like loud noises. Or slappping your hands together. You got to get serious on this or you might lose them Ballons popping

I have 2 indoor cats 1 porch cat and 15+ (at last count and much to my boyfriends dismay) outdoor barn cats.  The ones in will stay in, the ones  will have to stay out but I may be able to pen a few of them up in a 6x6 outdoor run off my catshed.  They don't all get along so I will have to make adjustments and decisions like euthanizing a couple that have been battling mild illnesses since kittenhood.  I don't want them to get sick and die slowly should there be no vet available to medicate them.  I also don't want to have real serious contact with them other than feeding and watering them if it gets real bad.  Also 4 dogs - 1 in and 3 out.  If I see that they are getting sick then they will have to be euthanized in some way (1st choice veterinarian), same with the cats but they will probably disappear and you won't find them to be able to assist them.  For those of you with garages you could build an attached pen with rabbit wire and 2x4's so they could get outside enjoyment.

Cats are pretty smart animals.  Unfortunately their instincts drive them to hunt anything that produces movement and noise.

I only have one to worry about fortunately, and he's been a housecat from the beginning.  Before I got him his previous owners left him outside much of the time, which I never understood because this is a big city and pets don't normally last very long when they spend the majority of the time outdoors.

It didn't take very long for 7 ( I have no idea what his previous owners named him) to learn that I didn't want, nor was I going to tolerate his "lust" for outdoor adventure.  I have always lived in second story apartments ( more plus than minus) and can leave the mini-blinds and drapes open around the clock which gives him plenty to watch.  He'll sit  on tables and in the houseplants next to the windows, hell, I even widened the window sills to accommodate his need for communing with nature.  He's as content as any cat I have ever seen.  He still trys to follow me out sometimes, but it's more that he wants to be with me than to go roaming around outside.

They will adjust to indoor only living.

If you have a cat that "trys" for the door when you open it I would suggest that you do the same thing I did when I first got 7.  If he was near the door looking to make an exit I would pick him up, pet him a few times, open the door and then set him back inside as I shut the door.  It takes about a week of doing this before they quit trying for an exit everytime you open the door.

Cats are "place" animals as oppossed to dogs which are "people" oriented".  A dog will follow you anywhere, a cat will not because they are very pensive about unknown environments.  If they don't know or have forgotten what is on the other side of a door they are extremely cautious about going out it.  Curious? Yes indeed.  But they are careful when they go into unknown places.

You just can't screw up once you decide to make a cat an indoor only model.  You can't keep them inside for two weeks and then one day decide to let them go out.  It sends a mixed message to them and then you have to go through all the nonsense again of picking them up and petting them while you are making your way through the exit.  tha's too much work to put yourself through and very confusing to the cat.

"Kitty greens" are a big help also.  Most of the time they want outside for the grass to chew on.  It helps them with hair ball vs digestive tract issues.  Provide some grass in an indoor window planter.

I have a problem with strays around my apartment complex.  I keep trying to get animal control to catch them and put them in the local shelter but they said they dont deal with cats only dogs.  I'm concerned cuz one got in a fight and its all cut and bloody.  It hangs around outside my door.  I've been thinking about trapping them and bringing them to an amimal shelter that does not distroy cats.  But i dont know exactly how to go about this.  I have to say there's not a bird in sight I think the cats have killed them all.

RebeccaS, bless your heart for thinking of the cats. Feral cats are in most cases the result of people dumping their unwanted, and usually unneutered, cats. A lot of areas now have volunteer organizations who will trap/spay/neuter "the forgotten felines". Call your shelter (s), they usually know. Call Petco or Petsmart if you have either in your area, they tend to help with the adoption process and will know who to contact. Please, don't give up, these cats are suffering!

That's how I ended up with 13 cats!!! I was a caretaker for a registered colony and then became a foster-mom to the kittens. One year alone we had 41 cats adopted! However, some with chronic illness or personality issued or just simply we love each other too much, well, you get the picture.

Anyway, Zeke and Yody, my alpha-male and his devoted brother, were used to going outside during the day and coming inside at night. After we moved, we decided to make them all into indoor cats, and it worked like a charm. We build them a patio which we completely enclosed and they are content. We can enclose the patio for the winter with the kind of ripple plastic that is commonly used for green-houses, which keeps it dry and retains some heat. They also have access to the laundry-room if it gets too cold. Pets will change their mind! YOU HAVE TO BE ALPHA!! Be consistent and they will submit.

Between Joe and myself, we have five cats, and three dogs.  All cats come in and go out.  They will not tolerate being kept inside for long.  The mama cat, which is mine, often lives down the street at the "cat lady's" house.  She goes back and forward.  She got injured once and came home to us and was very angry when we kept her inside for two weeks, after first seeing the vet.  Snarled at us, and won't even allow us to pet her..hissed and such.  So, we will have problems.   The mama cat is the only one who roams very far from home...none can have babies anymore.   We are responsible pet owners...  Especially after the mama cat ended up being a female and not a male cat, like I was told when I got "him"...aaaa  "her."  In fact, this is how Joe and I both ended up having more than one cat, each.  Mama cat still bears her original name..Teddy, only now it is spelled Teddie.

Joe wants to keep the cats inside when BF gets here and I am willing to do the same, but...  We shall see.  If they get out..they are out, period, and not coming back inside.  We have made several alternative plans for ourselves and our pets..  See I also have three dogs.  Two outside and one inside.  We realize that we may have to euthenize some, or all pets, but we are hoping not.  We will do our best to preserve all life, but are willing to do what we must to preserve human lives.  We both love our animals very much and wouldn't want to see anything happen to them, naturally, but our lives are worth more..and that's just the way it is.

Thanks for listening.  Take care.  Peace.

Regarding the cat's escaping when you open the front / back door.

I have an indoor cat who follows me everywhere I go.

She is a Devon Rex (more like a dog really)

I confine her to one room when I go out and shut the door.

The cat litter is in there.

When I return there is no problem I just let her out.

I know she is safe and can't get into trouble.

I have 10 bags so far, that is only a 5 week supply for 2 litter boxes, although I could probably make it stretch a bit longer if needed. I plan on getting a few more bags, currently storing in the trunk of an extra car we have, because the cats open the bags if they are in the house.

LOL, there was a 6 before there was 7, ( cats 4 and 5 had actual "names" - Mew, and Bitster).  A few people have thought it (7) was a bit odd, but everyone likes the name Seven.

Sully will figure it out, you just have to be patient.  It reassures them when you pick them up and talk to them for a few minutes before you leave.  It becomes normal for them and they know to expect that they're not getting out and "most importantly" that you are coming back.

Seven used to cry whenever I would shut the door to leave, and I mean cry!  But I found that if I take some time with him before I leave that he only meows a few times, if even that now, since I started giving him some extra attention right before I go.  He's always right there by the door waiting me to come back though!  I sometimes wish I had a another cat so 7 wouldn't be so lonely, but it's just not an option unfortunately.  I leave the TV on for him in my bedroom and a radio set to a classical music station for him in the kitchen when I go anywhere.  It's one of things that "Cat Dads" do I guess.

At the end of February 2006 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), caused by the H5N1 virus was detected in a domestic cat found dead on the northern island of Ruegen, Germany. Since mid-February, over 100 birds have died on this island and tests confirmed H5N1 infection. Also in Asia, cats and other felidae are occasionally found to be infected with H5N1 since the start of the poultry epidemic end 2003. Experimental studies have shown that the domestic cat can become infected with the virus and that cat to cat transmission is possible in principle. Serological studies in several Asian countries suggest that dogs may also contract the H5N1 infection. Countries in Europe have advised owners of pets living near H5N1 wild bird foci to keep cats indoors and dogs on a leash when taken for a walk.

We have 3 cats and one dog as well as 2 aquariums. Luckily for us, our cats were raised as indoor cats so going outside is a privelege that they only get when it is nice and sunny and we are outside with them. It seems that they just want to nibble on the grass and lay in the sunshine. When the threat of TSHTF looms however, then their days of laying in the sun and eating grass are over. I think they would be quite content as long as they were with us. My dog will have to go outside and so we have prepped for her to wear baby sock/baggie booties.  As much as she doesn't like it she will have to wear them if she wants to go out to go potty. As for the fish tanks, I will probably combine them if TSHTF in order to try and preserve them through the crisis. If not well then I guess we will just have extra water. I know that sounds gross but I will distill or chlorinate any water I have to if we run out of public utility service. If it never amounts to anything that severe, well then I have water for my plants (which LOVE the fish tank water).

Regarding what to do with cats should there be a pandemic...Keep them indoors, warm and well fed.  For general information there has been one officially confirmed case of a domestic cat catching H5N1 and dying from it in Germany.  And my understanding is that in the lab it has been demonstrated that the virus can be passed from cat to cat.  In Britain they are recommending all cats be kept indoors, for obvious reasons.  Not to worry too much.  In the long run, in my opinion, humans should have a little more respect.  Smile

Oh, and I forgot to mention that in the past, ie. several years ago, Bengal tigers and other "big" cats, in certain Asian zoos also contracted H5N1 (apparently from eating infected chickens) and died.  So for some unknown reason felines seem more susceptable.  But I think that must be simply due to their "diet."Smile

We've been adopted by two nameless cats.  They are well-fed but they do keep birds and rats away from the house.  Their best friend in the world is Psycho, our 95 lb. Rottweiller.   We don't have any stray dogs or cats within a 100 meter radius of our place.

I also have a cat named "Grace" She's an indoors only cat. I'm not too worried about her. Give her ,her indoor formula cat food, her litter box, some cat nip filled toys, and she's one happy kitty. Very very good house cat. Prefers staying in doors. Especially up here in Alaska! (Although, who could blame her?)

I had two cats, one just died after 19 years.  They are indoor cats....  Anyway, the one that died was a big fan of wet food.  In fact, we used to feed him around 6 cans a day....  I now have 3000 extra cans of cat food.   LOL

Wow Albert!
That's a lot for a cat to eat each day.
We lost our oldest cat at 19 too.
The remaining cat will be 16 next month. He's a light eater though. I only give him half a can in the morning and dry food the rest of the time.

Our jack russell looks like a pot belly pig though and never gets enough to eat.
When I put her on a diet, she just goes outside and hunts rabbits. Gross!

I have 2 cats just about a year old each. They are outside. We have Asthma my 3 kids & myself.   Plus I have 5 dogs. 3 of them are inside. So this is just unreal for me. I can't imagine losing any of them to this BF. Plus I have 2 horses. Do any of you know if Horses can get BF? I mean they eat off the ground.

We only have one now.  She is almost 13.  Longest ever I've been blessed to have one.  I think God decided at some point in time that I was going to be the one he sent the sick ones to.  I nurse them as long as we can and them help them go Home without any pain.  My pain has always been unbearable.  They are my kids.

She doesn't go outside - never has.  Problem I have is my squirrels.  I have approximately 15-20 I feed daily.  rabbits, chipmunks, birds, etc...  4 of those 15-20 squirrels took food from my hand on my deck.  I stopped feeding by hand 4 weeks ago because of bf and disease rodents can spread - don't need feces on the deck.   Can't believe My squirrels can be called rodents.  Back to my problem...my cat loves them too.  She sits at the window and they "talk" to each other.  She is sooo bored now... has to settle on watching them eat in the designated feeding sanctuary area.

Sand - I can understand what you're feeling even though I think of our squirrels as being nuisance creatures. We have a mature pecan tree and many fruit trees that I planted after we moved here.

The rascals strip the trees of everything before the harvest is ready. What they waste (plenty), the rabbits clean up. No mess, but no harvest either.
The first year here, I thought a neighbor must be stealing all of the apples. Then I was working from home and discovered where they were going. LOL!

The squirrels used to harras our older cat, the one that's gone now. They'd get right up on the outside of the windowsill and tease him.

Our cats were allowed outside until we moved where we are now. We're too close to a freeway to allow them out anymore so they adjusted well to being inside - except when the squirrels teased them.

I've joked about making squirrel jerky and wished that someone else would do something about them, but they are endlessly amusing.

I hope you're little colony is well.

Albert - I forgot to tell you how sorry I am that you lost your cat. I still miss ours too and it's been a couple of years. They ARE part of the family.

oknut; There are specialily designed wraps for trees , one is a plain steel wrap and it is imposible for the squirrels to grab and they fall off. It is about two or three foot long and wraps around the tree. Cost effective for one or two tree.   It can be used for fruit trees too It dosent look bad either

Hi,

I'm new to the forum but would like to share an idea that's worked.  When I moved into this house last fall, there were several feral cats in the backyard that I believe were "dumps" since two are pedigree (a turkish van and a main coon.)  Since they were always catching the birds, I decided to feed them.  Every other week I put out a 20 lb bag of cat food along with weekly water (rubbermaid tote of water.)   A few weeks ago I noticed that they are no longer chasing the birds - they're too fat now to get them.

Also, since I have a persian cat, I put a piece of plexiglas in the sliding glass door track, so that when I open the doors, there is no nose-to-nose contact between my little guy and the "backyard visitors" thru the screen door.

This may work for others - I hope it helps!
K.

My cat is inside as of yesterday. The Washington Zoo set the pace for us. He is dying to go outside, so we have to lock doors, etc. I have several children so it is a daunting task. I do plan to pick up an owl to place on my deck to deter birds. Then, I have to figure out what to do with my dog and the outside. I feel like the unqualifed door patrol!

I've got three cats (22 lb solid black one, medium-sized tabby and white one, and a smallish Siamese mix) and a Yorkie .... all indoors-only.

The dog does go outside to potty, but if need be, he can use newspapers indoors.

I haven't even started stocking up on cat food and litter.  Confused  They go through both like crazy, so it's kind of expensive.  My black kitty can't eat the cheaper brands of cat food (it just comes right back up), so I have to buy the better stuff.  Buying it weekly isn't too bad, but stocking up is going to be pretty challenging to our budget. Ouch

They're worth it, though.  I wouldn't take anything for any of my "kids". Smile  My little blue-eyed Siamese baby is a DOLL.  Hard to believe such wonderful kitties end up at the animal shelter, which is where we adopted him and my tabby kitty.

i have a siamese cat "sophie" that has lived with me for 11 years. she NEVER goes outside. she seems perfectly content to look out the patio door and drool at the birds and other critters.  i had always been a dog person, until she came into my life. didn't know that cats were such caring loving animals. if i run out of people food i have LOADS of cat food to eat! of course i will share with sophie.

I'm late to this thread and wanted to say I'm sorry about your cat. My cat is 17 and wound up in kitty ICU last June. After ultrasound, the doc said "im sorry" and sent me home with pain meds. (pretty easy to read between those lines). Anyway, I used herbal parasite killer and homeopathics and he is with me one year later. ICU had served Gerber ham baby food, so when Panther wouldn't eat, I gave him that. Not only could I get him to eat it(or use a syringe), it has put on a lot of weight. Guess the babyfood has a lot of carbs. At least I can use my stockpiled babyfood for flavoring rice if I end up with a bunch. perish the thought. D

Thanks D-  His Siamese brother is now reaching the end of his journey as well.  Since they were Siamese twins, the other one has not been doing well.

This leaves me with Oscar (10).  Smartest cat I've ever seen...

Albert: Are you giving your senior Prednisone? I give 1/2 pill/day and it really helps. Also, my vet gave me pain meds that I give sublingual at night so Panther gets a good sleep. This must be really hard on you. Hugs and Kisses. D

I agree that pets are people and we should treat them as our children. I am happy to see someone else feels as I do. We must protect pets, they don't even know there is a pandemic flu. I can't imagine how anyone can let their cat outside alone, where it could be injured or get rabies, never mind pandemic flu.

Thanks Evergreen.  I used my cat whisperer technique to cure the broken heart lol.  He stopped eating a few weeks after his brother died.  I really didn't think those sorts of things were possible, with regard to animals behaving that way after one dies.

I am late to this thread also, I recently lost a cat. His name was Flash because he was so... fast. He got ran over but at least the person who ran over him stopped and moved him out of the street.

I still have five tame cats and one stray that is almost tame. I am really working with him so I can get him neutered so I can bring him in when needed. We plan on bringing all the cats in when the birds come into this area.

I have been saving cat liter and food but do not have near enough.

While searching for something else, I found a set of instructions for a "cat run".

Very simple and workable idea; they put it up against the house with the basement window as the "door" to get in or out of it. (I imagine you could add a flap on the top incase you have to make them come in...)

Wood frame with the mesh staple gunned.

Does anyone here feel that their pets return? My neighbors' beloved cat "Reuban" died early this year. A week ago, she had a dream that he was coming back to her. A few days ago, while visiting her brother in another part of the state, a cat came to their house and endeared itself to them so much that they brought her home. This new kitty took immediately to him (Reuben was his cat), walked under his feet the way Reuban used to, followed him everywhere the way Reuban did, immediately slept on his lap like Reuban and is mellow around other animals the way that Reuban was. Coincidence or truth? They both think it is Reuban returned. D

Are you afraid she'll eat an infected bird or that you will not be able to go out to get her? I have twenty cats. I changed the garage over to a playhouse for them They no longer go out anywhere except to the vets.

I am a cat lover as well. My calico cat thinks she owns the computer area, and travels about investigating and making sure things are in order. I am not a computer genius. Just a computer programmer since 1978. I mention this because having a lap cat who thought he was my assistant (he is now in cat heaven) was comforting as I labored for days at a time writing code.

My cat recently (she is 6 now) enjoys swatting at the mouse arrow, becomes keenly interested with anything that look edible running around on the cable screen. She once downed a full sized rabbit in the woods. When trying to take down a huge peacock she had met her match and wound being the chased instead of the chaser.

This was humiliating- her worst case scenario. And she sulked beneath the house for a day.

Cats add a whole new dimension to our world. They were worshiped by the Egyptians, considered evil by some of the oriental cultures, and are incredible readers of body language.

They possess an unusually large portion of the brain for tactile contact. An unpetted or unsnuggled cat is a miserable cat. A cat held against their will is an unhappy cat. Some people are afraid of them and they sense it. Some people are allergic to them but pet my cat anyway cos she's is so cute. My son loves and pets our cat. She is kitty to him and he often says "want to pet kitty or touch kitty."

She is immune to all flus so far and vaccinated against major cat diseases. Despite the rump in the face in the morning, being licked on the nose by a cat who sleeps on your chest every night and wakes you up with purring and hunger,  is an experience that only a true cat person can understand. I have had funerals for my cats and had a pet sematary http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet_Sematary - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet_Sematary
when my wife and I had 13 cats. Strangely the other cats would sit around as the lost one was interred and a tiny cross put up.
