I can see where they are coming from.  This chart shows the 21 day average of new cases (per 100,000).  They have been headed down for a while now.  (There is a worrisome leveling off there at the end though.)

Personally, I think that they should wait until they are below the CDC’s definition of high incidence (less than 100 new cases per 100,000 over a two week period), as relaxing precautions may lead to a rebound.  But a rebound in one state may prevent one in other states.

But I think that in the long run "stupid" as well as their family members and contacts will pay.  If "stupid" is young they are unlikely to die but covid could give them life long health problems (and shorten their life).

There can be sort term economic benefit but I think the long term costs will be very high.

Is not having any (major) rules in Texas not seen as a criminal act ? It will mean the dead of many people in Texas-most likely most in black/(afro-American) and hispanics, native Americans.

So here we are, more than a month later and Texas isn’t looking so stupid after all.

They leveled off a bit around the time they lifted restrictions, but then continued on down. Not sure what is working for them, but they seem to be doing okay.  Maybe because the weather is warmer (in general) in Texas, maybe because the variants haven’t reached them yet?  I hope that they can continue the downward trend.

They looked OK for a while, because deaths take so long after infection and no one took new variants into consideration.  They look pretty stupid now. (Always did look stupid to me.)

This is the 21 day average of daily cases per 100,000 for Texas.  I will leave it to you to interpret the data.

You can check here for another graph of the situation in Texas.   https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/texas/#graph-cases-daily - https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/usa/texas/#graph-cases-daily

Basically it is similar to the one Little House posted showing a good decline, except in her graph there is the misleading "going to zero" on the right hand side, instead of stopping when the data stopped.

There is a strong case to point out the falling rate, but it is spoiled by the graph trying to show the future rate at zero instead of it leveling out at about 3,000 cases per day.

Good point Edwin, I look at my graphs so often that I forget that others may see them differently.  The “go to zero” part of the graph is the future.  I do it that way because it makes it easier to add data as I go.  When you look at any of my graphs, the current day is where the line drops to zero.  Anything past that should be ignored.

(I am sorry that I don’t have time to clean up each graph before posting it, but there are only so many hours in the day.)

I can accept that explanation, and knowing the reason I can then read the charts as you want them to be read.   i also think that it is good that you are entering your own data in charts.     This really gives a feel for your situation, especially it that is where you live.

Actually, I am in Ohio, but I track almost a dozen states.  Mostly states around Ohio, or states where I have family, and few states where some big gathering was happening and I wanted to see what it did to the numbers.

One of the things that has helped me make day to day decisions are my local charts.  With the information that Ohio provides, I track my zip code, the zip codes around me, my county as well as the state.  I am also able to track hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths.  This gives the real picture right here.

I am a numbers person, and it makes me so sad to see just how badly the data is often misrepresented.  This is why I started tracking it myself.  I knew that I would never trust someone else’s charts.

I am sorry if someone misunderstood my charts.  That was never my intent.
