Nasal swab testing of poultry workers and handlers in recent highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu outbreak settings in Nigeria turned up seven positive results in humans, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said in its weekly communicable disease threat report. So far this year, Nigeria has reported 30 H5N1 outbreaks in poultry, spanning seven states. Real-time polymerase chain reaction on 64 samples found that 7 that were positive for influenza A. Six were H5, and 1 was unsubtypable. The ECDC said different H5 viruses are circulating in West African countries, and more epidemiologic and virologic details are needed to assess the situation, but for now, it considers the risk of zoonotic spread in European countries to be very low.
