I feel confused! Everything I am reading from scientists seems dismal but then I see other media posts portraying O in a good light. So hard to really know what to believe. Does the reaction alone to the new variant warrant the same response or is it cautionary. What to believe?!?!

I think you're right.
I swear, there are countless points in history where the people of different countries *really* sacrificed to get through a tough time. But the consensus now is "omg we can't miss a holiday, the world will end if we do". <eye roll>
Of course, it's much more likely that Christmas will lead to another surge. Just waiting right now for the post Thanksgiving numbers...
Personally, I have extremely mixed feelings. My aunt and uncle have plans to come for Christmas, and they and my folks are now in their mid-eighties. My uncle can't hear me if I wear a mask because he refuses to get hearing aids, so my plan has been that for 4 days I will let myself be unmasked around them all, but skip any dinners out, etc. Omicron is making me much more anxious about that decision. Yes, they're all triple vaxed. And, they all go mask less around way too many people for my comfort.
Related: If anyone has experience with a clear mask that isn't awful - (fogs immediately, hard to breathe) let me know!
Bottom line: If data on Omicron is confirmed to be really bad, I hope like hell the powers that be lock us down before Christmas, not after.

Hmmm....I think you are being optimistic. I think in around 10 days from now, we are going to see enough to shut us down again I hate it, but thinking it will be true. We shall see. We have lots of events coming up for my family that i really don't want to miss!

I saw a supermarket worker wearing a clear mask yesterday, and at the same time I saw a lady wearing what looked like a homemade mask that was clear. It was more of a face shield but instead of starting at the forehead, it started above her nose like a regular mask, and went as far as the bottom of her chin. She had a thin line of padding that ran from the bottom left up and over the nose and down the other cheek to the bottom right but the bottom edge of the mask was not padded and stood about 1cm clear of her chin. This was presumably to enable her to breathe more easily. The only possible protection this mask offered was to stop saliva particles being broadcast outwards. A number of shop workers here are wearing clear full face shields.
