Both basic ideas are not very helpfull...In pandemics there are lots of "easy actions" we could do;

Pandemic triangle is "disease-transport-host."...that simple ! So if you can keep disease away from host by limiting transport you may be slowing down a pandemic...

That idea may have worked for CoViD...bird-flu now is that widespread it may kill "trillions of birds" and become very widespread in mammals...If you act realistic on that scenario you would try to limit H5N1 (most) spread to mammals as much as possible...keep farm-birds safe the best one can...

Surprisingly, when comparing plasma and red blood cells (RBCs)-enriched fraction, higher viral load levels were detected in RBCs, with decreased RBC count, and hematocrit and hemoglobin levels in infected mice. Next, we treated infected mice with hemin triggering more aggressive symptoms. Strikingly, when combining hemin treatment with chloroquine (a compound that known to interact with the heme group and induces a conformational change in its structure) the infection and its clinical manifestations were distinctly attenuated. Computational docking suggested that heme is able to bind to MHV Spike protein in a similar way to the one, experimentally observed for SARS-CoV-2. Overall, our results lead to a global perspective of COVID-19 beyond the canonical focus on the respiratory system, and strongly support the multi-organ extent of coronavirus infection through specific interactions with RBC hemoproteins.

DJ, Here in NL pharmacies run into more and more problems getting all kinds of medications...There could be lots of reasons;

-Increase of demand means shortage (at least short term)

-Some medication is "outsourced" to "overseas" (India, South Africa) -so if demand is growing there, production capacity not increasing fast enough shortage is a result

-Basic ingredients are harder to get/costs get to high to make profits...(May be a factor when western companies deal with competition from low-income countries. Production costs in "the west" go up...other countries may see costs going up less...try to out-compete western companies). 

-Here in NL government and healthinsurance work together in buying medication. They offer relative low prices...so "big pharma" sometimes go for more profits in other EU countries (with then pharmacies sometimes buying medication in other EU member states...).

With China last month reporting their https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2023/03/china-guangdong-cdc-reporting-1-h3n8.html" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(63, 63, 127); -  third human infection with avian H3N8 , and recent studies suggesting that this avian virus continues to accrue mammalian adaptations (see  https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2023/04/eid-journal-evolution-of-avian.html" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(63, 63, 127); - EID Journal: Evolution of Avian Influenza Virus (H3) with Spillover into Humans, China ), there is a good deal of concern over its future trajectory. 

Last week the above mentioned study identified 4 sublineages of H3 AIVs and 126 distinct genotypes, of which the H3N2 G23 genotype has recently predominated in China. The study found:

• After reassortment with 6 internal genes of H9N2, current H3N8 AIVs seem to have the advantage of infecting humans ( https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/29/6/22-1786_article#r42" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(63, 63, 127); - 42 ). Ongoing adaptation in mammals after continuous human infections may underlie emergence of pandemic strains.

• H3 AIV has shown the potential for cross-species transmission and was the origin of other animal influenza viruses, which caused epidemics in horses, dogs, seals, and pigs

• The H3N8 G25 viruses had acquired human-adapted mutations after infecting humans ( https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/29/6/22-1786-app1.pdf" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(63, 63, 127); - Appendix Figure 14), such as 228G/S in the HA gene and E627K/V in the PB2 gene, which were also present in 1968 H3N2 pandemic strains ( https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/29/6/22-1786_article#r43" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(63, 63, 127); background-color: rgb(235, 237, 236); font-size: 16px; - 43 ). This finding indicates the pandemic potential of the newly emerged H3N8 AIVs.

While concerning, the low number of human cases reported so far suggests the virus isn't quite ready for prime time. Although there may be some cases we are missing, widespread circulation in humans seems doubtful at this point.

WHO: Covid deaths have dropped by 95% this year. "We’re very encouraged by the sustained decline in reported deaths from  COVID-19, which have dropped 95% since the beginning of this year."

DJ, from a virus perspective "using hosts longer" could benefit virus spread...
