DJ-Pandemics have to be linked to their backgrounds. Without World War 1 the Spanish Flu very likely could have been limited. Also the Black Death has links with both wars and climate changes...both the end of the West- and East Roman empires have pandemic links... Climate "change/collapse" will bring both more extreme weather and earthquakes. Weather http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/04/ipcc-keeps-downplaying-the-danger-even-as-reality-strikes.html or http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/04/ipcc-keeps-downplaying-the-danger-even-as-reality-strikes.html - http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2023/04/ipcc-keeps-downplaying-the-danger-even-as-reality-strikes.html ; As illustrated by the above image, the daily sea surface temperature (SST) between 60°South and 60°North was at a record high on April 2, 2023, i.e. the highest temperature in the NOAA record that started in 1981. This record high sea surface temperature comes as we're moving into a new El Niño, as illustrated by the image on the right, adapted from https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/lanina/enso_evolution-status-fcsts-web.pdf" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(153, 34, 17); - NOAA . DJ, to keep it short and simple-higher sea surface temperatures bring more/stronger storms now hitting the US, a very bad monsoon-with flooding in South Asia... It also brings less ice pushing down the underlying earth on Greenland, Antarctica, several other parts of the globe-resulting in an increase of seismic events. DJ...record high sea surface temperatures could result in more storms...However past seasons did see a lot of sand being transported from Africa-Sahara over the Atlantic limiting storms...Also dry air could mean lower risk of flooding...with more extreme rain events maybe less linked to hurricanes... DJ-In the east of Ukraine lots of rain did see some Ukraine claims Russia is "using a weather weapon"....not that likely...Russia may have problems from that rain as well... More rain in some areas could compensate for less snow in winter - keeping supply of water going on.

While it won't guarantee I won't be forced to evacuate my humble abode (again) this summer, it does lower the chances.
https://www.climate.gov/enso" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(63, 63, 127); - Climate.gov describes this sea temperature oscillation as:
El Niño and La Niña are the warm and cool phases of a recurring climate pattern across the tropical Pacific—the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, or “ENSO” for short. The pattern shifts back and forth irregularly every two to seven years, bringing predictable shifts in ocean surface temperature and disrupting the wind and rainfall patterns across the tropics. These changes have a cascade of global side effects.
While its impacts are global, its impact on the Atlantic Hurricane season is https://www.climate.gov/news-features/blogs/enso/impacts-el-ni%C3%B1o-and-la-ni%C3%B1a-hurricane-season" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(63, 63, 127); - described by NOAA as:
Simply put, El Niño favors stronger hurricane activity in the central and eastern Pacific basins, and suppresses it in the Atlantic basin (Figure 1). Conversely, La Niña suppresses hurricane activity in the central and eastern Pacific basins, and enhances it in the Atlantic basin (Figure 2). The caveat being that 1992 was an El Niño year, and it saw one of the most destructive hurricanes on record (Andrew) hit South Florida, during what was otherwise a lackluster hurricane season. 1969 was an active El Niño year, which saw CAT 5 hurricane Camille slam into the upper gulf coast. Which is why I will still be preparing this summer the same as I do every year. DJ The Somalia M5.7 quake later showed up as near Aden-Yemen...so location description changed a bit...now back to the location they (USGS) started with...USGS mixing Loyalty Islands with New Caledonia https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us6000kddz/executive or https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us6000kddz/executive - https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us6000kddz/executive ; M 5.2 - 284 km E of Vao, New Caledonia- 2023-05-20 04:34:14 (UTC)

DJ-Can be a bit confusing when it is in the same area.... The Spanish Flu did kill that many because World War 1 limited information/(international) action to limit spread... There are lots of things we do not (yet) know of/on earthquakes...The largest ones go M (magnitude) 9 to 9,5 in recent history...that is the last 70 years or so...There is a lot of discussion on maximum quake-strength...An asteroid would be able to create an M.11+ ...could "end" this planet...(there is some discussion on moons being created as an outcome of asteroid strikes...). It is very likely "tectonics" can create stronger then M9.5 quakes...upper limit M10 ? Tsunami's-mega waves-can move all over the planet-did so several times the last 25 years...Often the waves in most places do no/little damage...still can be measured...But in Japan, Indonesia tsunami's killed thousends...with waves killing people in East Africa... -------------- We are allready in a lot of global chaos...Major earthquakes is the last thing we need...Less ice pushing down on Greenland, Antarctica etc. means the land under the ice is rising...it creates quakes...Volcanic activity and quakes also are linked...Major volcanic eruptions do cause food problems...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer ; The year https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1816" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(51, 102, 204); background: none; overflow-wrap: break-word;" title="1816 - 1816 is known as the Year Without a Summer because of severe climate abnormalities that caused average global temperatures to decrease by 0.4–0.7 °C (0.7–1 °F). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer#cite_note-1" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(51, 102, 204); background: none; overflow-wrap: break-word; - [1] Summer temperatures in Europe were the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_weather" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(51, 102, 204); background: none; overflow-wrap: break-word;" title="Extreme weather - coldest of any on record between the years of 1766 and 2000. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer#cite_note-2" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(51, 102, 204); background: none; overflow-wrap: break-word; - [2] This resulted in major food shortages across the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Hemisphere" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(51, 102, 204); background: none; overflow-wrap: break-word;" title="Northern Hemisphere - Northern Hemisphere . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer#cite_note-3" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(51, 102, 204); background: none; overflow-wrap: break-word; - [3] Evidence suggests that the anomaly was predominantly a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_winter" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(51, 102, 204); background: none; overflow-wrap: break-word;" title="Volcanic winter - volcanic winter event caused by the massive https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1815_eruption_of_Mount_Tambora" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(51, 102, 204); background: none; overflow-wrap: break-word;" title="1815 eruption of Mount Tambora - 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in April in the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_East_Indies" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(51, 102, 204); background: none; overflow-wrap: break-word;" title="Dutch East Indies - Dutch East Indies (known today as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesia" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(51, 102, 204); background: none; overflow-wrap: break-word;" title="Indonesia - Indonesia ). In fact, earthquakes usually accompany a volcanic eruption. Similarly, unusual earthquakes can also lead to volcanic eruptions. - Similar to earthquakes, volcanic activity is observed when the plates are divergent (move apart) or convergent (move towards each other). In such plate movements, the magma present in the plate boundaries may rise to the Earth’s surface, leading to https://sciencestruck.com/volcanic-eruptions-what-causes-volcanoes-to-erupt" style="box-sizing: inherit; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; color: rgb(77, 89, 104); overflow-wrap: break-word; box-shadow: rgba(34, 155, 238, 0.3) 0px -5px 0px inset; text-decoration: none; transition: all 0.3s ease 0s; - volcanic eruptions . Divergent plates may cause long volcanic rifts, whereas convergent plates result in individual volcanic eruptions. In addition, both activities occur within a plate, which are referred to as intraplate earthquakes and volcanoes, respectively. It is estimated that about 10 percent of earthquakes are of this type. But such was the shallow 5.9 quake’s long distance from the mainland – it hit 450km south of the South Island, and 285km southwest of the remote Snares Islands – that https://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/2023p405672" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(56, 163, 215); text-decoration: none; - just one person reported feeling it on GeoNet . It happened to strike near a little-understood seismic zone that’s produced some of the most powerful earthquakes in New Zealand’s recent history. That was the https://teara.govt.nz/en/map/5586/puysegur-trench" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(56, 163, 215); text-decoration: none; - Puysegur Trench : a plate boundary where the Australian plate dives below the Pacific plate - the opposite way to how the two plates subduct in the North Island, in the better-known Hikurangi Subduction Zone.
The boundary stretches for more than 800km south from the South Island, to a point in the wild and windy Southern Ocean, around 400km west of the Auckland Islands. could it be related to less land-ice on Antarctica-so landmass being less pushed down by that ice-rising slowly ? In 2009, the 7.8 Fiordland earthquake struck close to the northern end of the trench, releasing 25,000 times more energy than the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945 and twisted the South Island, moving Puysegur Pt on the southwestern tip of the island 30cm closer to Australia. Its remote location, near Dusky Sound, meant there was relatively little damage. A magnitude 7.2 quake hit the trench itself in November 2004 – a month before an 8.1 quake near the trench caused shaking felt as far as Tasmania.
GeoNet duty seismologist Dr Jonathan Hanson said we could be reasonably confident this afternoon’s quake was related to subduction zone processes in the area. “The fact that we see quite a lot of events located in a really similar area reinforces that it’s likely to be related to some ongoing processes there.” In the past 20 years, scientists have located about 100 events in the region. what is the potential maximum magnitude of the combination of fault-lines south from New Zealand-to Samoa ? Recent history did see an M8.1 in 2004... In strike-slip faulting, each side of the crustal block slides past the other without uplift and down-thrust, while in reverse faulting, the block above the fault moves up relative to the block below the fault. “That’s quite an interesting phenomenon itself, that we can be seeing two distinct kinds of earthquake activity in this area,” he said. “But the main thing to take away from this, is that it’s a reminder we have a subduction zone off the South Island that is productive and capable of generating large, tsunamigenic events.” In this afternoon’s case, no tsunami threat to New Zealand had been identified. Maybe satellites did take over the job (tsunami-watch) from buoys ? But it may be south of New Zealand-and some other areaś-may be hard to get a good view on...

This gradient or tight isobars is generating strong easterly winds from NE Scotland and the Northern Isles across the North Sea to Denmark and beyond to the Baltic Sea. A wind gust of 77mph this afternoon at Inverbervie between Aberdeen and Dundee. - To the south of the UK over France and Spain, a deep area of low pressure moving east over the Bay of Biscay this evening will also bring severe weather impacts across parts of these two nations tonight and through Friday. A level 1 was issued across central to S Italy and the E Adriatic coastline mainly for heavy rainfall, tornadoes and large hail.
A level 1 was issued across SE France mainly for heavy rainfall.
A level 1 was issued across SW France mainly for severe wind gusts and tornadoes and to the lesser degree for heavy rainfall. The weather should calm down across western Europe over the weekend as the troublesome lows weaken – with winds easing and just sunny spells and showers around rather then the deluges and strong winds today and tomorrow. But more trouble looks like it’s brewing early next week, as another powerful jet streak arrives from the west over the North Atlantic and takes aim at western Europe, bringing in more low pressure systems from the west with more wind and rain. DJ, weather prediction is getting harder...small differences now may mean major differences in a few days...

Víðir Reynisson, the chief of the Civil Protection Department, says that there is no way to exclude the possibility of a dike reaching Grindavík. Magma intrusion might be beneath GrindavíkAccording to data from the Icelandic Met Office, significant changes in the seismic activity was measured near Sundhnjúkar crater row north of Grindavík and deformation observed in the Reykjanes Peninsula yesterday afternoon. The seismic activity has moved south towards Grindavík. Based on how the seismic activity has evolved since 6 pm yesterday, along with results from GPS measurements, there is a likelihood that a magma intrusion has extended beneath Grindavík. DJ, A major volcanic eruption SW of Iceland will not only disrupt trans-atlantic flights...it may also bring water vapor/green house gasses into the atmosphere... https://en.vedur.is/#tab=quakes or https://en.vedur.is/#tab=quakes - https://en.vedur.is/#tab=quakes ; Around 1000 earthquakes have occurred around the dike since midnight, all below a magnitude 3.0. Models show a 15-km long magma intrusion, located just northwest of Grindavík. From geophysical models of the dike intrusion, it is estimated that the intrusion is propagating upwards slowly, with magma thought to be 800 m, or higher, beneath the surface. The overall assessment from the status meeting yesterday was that the likelihood of a volcanic eruption is high, and that an eruption could be possible on a timescale of just days DJ, it may be an explosive eruption..
