Someone with a medical background can comment on the following.
I understand that Versed (midazolam HCI) is very effective in eliminating
oxygen-debt(struggling to breath) in palliative patients, morphine and
brandy are not contraindicated.

(above is an excerpt)

"Midazolam is one of the newer agents available with a potency between
lorazepam and diazepam. It can be given SC, IM or IV. In certain
situations it may also be given PO although one will not find that in the
CPS"

Rick, you are right about Versed.  It is a wonderful drug and could save a lot of suffering for someone who was stricken with the cytokine storm and facing imminent death.  However, in the US Versed can only be used in hospital and dental environments.  It is not available at a pharmacy.  I do think a related drug, such as Valium would be good as well, but I am with you--I would love to have some Versed around if worse came to worse.

I feel obligated to point out that euthanasia is illegal in the US.  My opinions aside.

Will there be a coroner's inquest or an autopsy of an exhumed deceased?  Probably not.  But I present a scenario to you....

You ease Dad on his journey to Valhalla and your spouse assists or knows about it.  5 years down the line spouse wants a divorce and all property and soul custody of the kiddies.  You are threatened with exposure as what would be considered a murderer if you don't go along with spouse's wishes.  At best you risk a personal and painful episode exposed to public judgement.  At worst, you face a court and possible jail time.

Remember....there are no answers, certainly no easy answers.  Just question after question after question.

SZ, Thanks for the post.  Just for the record, I wasn't promoting euthenasia.  If you take a look at Dr. Woodson's publication, he recommends having on hand hydrocodone and benzodiazepines for pain and anxiety.  I wasn't necessarily advocating that one intentionally administer a lethal dose of either.  I am just saying that if I werre to the point of bleeding out of my mouth, caughing up blood and cyanotic from lack of oxygen, struggling for every breath and certain to die within 48 hours, I would hope that someone would administer something to make me more comfortable.

References to Versed are intended to benefit quality of life, not to
expedite death. My reference to agoinists such a alcohol and morphine
are in keeping with quality of life concerns in palliative situations.

I walk the talk.

Legal distinctions will become moot, as this event unfolds. Nature or
rather, H5N1, or, H7, H9...will need no assistance to expedite death.
My 2-cents.

Death, where is thy sting?

Rotro:  I agree with you.  If I am dy8ing please make my last moments on this earth as pleasant as humanly possible.

I have diazipan, norco 10 and 7.5, trazadone for a car accident I was in on 10/1/05.  I am stockpiling all I can for just this purpose, and getting more as I can.  I don't have a sh*t load but I would have enough for the situation.   I hope to be able to throw it away and never need it but if we do, I will be there to ease the pain.  I do not know if I could give a leathal dose, I will have to be in that situation.  Personally I would ask for a lethal dose myself as I do not like pain, I've had enough.

You might need both the meds to get some sleep either during this or after this is eventually over, whenever that might be.
