As public health officials from Boston to San Diego brace for a potential double hit from seasonal influenza and a new wave of swine flu, schools and vaccine distribution have become major focal points.

Students returning to classes starting this week will provide chances for the H1N1 virus to gain new footholds, and the government has warned that the flu season will probably start much earlier than October, when the illness typically emerges from a summer slumber.

Public health leaders in San Diego County have told school districts to prepare for decisive action, including campus closures, if there's a large cluster of infections.

As the county announced four more swine flu deaths yesterday, an advisory panel for the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that 159 million Americans - about half the nation's population - receive the first swine flu vaccinations when those shots become available in October.
