Sarah Palin profile: Former beauty queen was an unlikely choice

Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, nicknamed "Sarah Barracuda" for her
youthful athletic prowess, is such an unlikely choice for
vice-presidential running mate that her telephone number is still
listed in the Wasilla phone book.

As an upholder of gun rights and a fierce opponent of abortion, Sarah Palin will help woo the strong Republican core who still doubt John McCain's record
Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska, as a beauty queen in 1984
Sarah Palin as a beauty queen in 1984
. The governor is four years Obama's junior

Until two years ago, she was mayor of Wasilla, a suburb of the Alaskan capital Anchorage with a population of 8,471 - "many of them," one Democrat mocked, "her relatives".

On Friday, Mrs Palin's number went straight to answer phone with a hurriedly-recorded greeting in which she said: "Please leave a message."

Born of Irish, German and British stock, Mrs Palin, 44, is a committed Protestant who headed her high school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes and would lead team prayers before games of basketball - Barack Obama's favourite sport.

She is still remembered for winning an Alaska schools championship in 1982 by hitting a free throw in the final seconds despite a stress fracture in her ankle. At school, she met her husband Todd and eloped with him to marry exactly 20 years before she was chosen by Mr McCain for the Republican presidential ticket.

A former Miss Wasilla 1984 and runner up in the Alaska beauty pageant, she was featured in Vogue last year. She has worked as a commerical fisherman with her husband, who is part Eskimo and a chamption snow-mobiler, and briefly as a television reporter.

The Palins have five children - a son Track, 19, who is in the US Army, a baby boy Trig of four months who has Down's syndrome and three daughters Bristol, Willow and Piper.

Like Mr McCain, she has sometimes been a thorn in the side of the Republican estalishment. After serving for two years on the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission she resigned over a "lack of ethics" of Republican leaders and exposed her party's state chairman for corruption.

A strong social conservative, she is an upholder of gun rights after regularly going out on 3am moose hunts with her parents when she was a child. A fierce opponent of abortion, she supports capital punishment.

Recognising that that shock selection would "demand the best that I can give" on the campaign trail, Mrs Palin turned to her husband, who was standing with their four younger children as she spoke in Dayton, Ohio.

"I had promised Todd a little surprise for the anniversary present," she said. "And hopefully he knows that I did deliver."

Palin’s hubby and son not Republicans

Democrats may be blasting Sarah Palin as a doctrinaire conservative, and Republicans may be embracing her for the same reason, but her husband and oldest son are independents.

Or, more precisely, their party affiliation is listed as “undeclared” on voter registration records retrieved from the Alaska Division of Elections. Todd Palin, husband of the Alaska governor, hasn’t been affiliated with a party since he first registered to vote while he was in his early 20s, in 1989 — the year after he married Sarah Palin. And Track Palin, their 19-year-old son, registered as undeclared when he became eligible to vote last year.

Todd Palin, a regular voter, could have cast his ballot for his wife in her 2006 Republican primary against incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski because the Alaska Republican Party allows those registered undeclared and “nonpartisan” to vote in the party’s primaries.

Track Palin has yet to vote, according to the Division of Elections, while Bristol Palin, his 17-year-old sister, is not yet eligible to vote. Sarah Palin is a registered Republican.

Palin strikes back at critics

From FERGUS SHANAHAN
in Minnesota

Published: Today

A WEEK ago nobody had ever heard of her.

Today she is the most talked-about woman in the world. And with good reason.

Sarah Palin's sensational performance at the Republican Party Convention may turn out to be the tipping point of this rollercoaster American election.

Obama fans hoping she would fluff her big night were in for a nasty shock.

This speech has turned the election upside down. It was simply stunning.

Democrats and their Lefty media backers had been sneering that she was a small town nobody, a hick from the Alaskan sticks put into a job way beyond an inexperienced woman.

Believe me, you will not be hearing that again.

Palin turned out to be an electrifying mix of intelligence, passion, energy, optimism and plain speaking.

Full of self-assurance and aggression, she popped Barack's balloon big-time.

From the moment she walked on stage in this cavernous bear pit, bandbox smart in cream jacket, trim black skirt and black heels, she proved that John McCain knew exactly what he was doing when he picked her as running mate.

Hair piled into a slight beehive – more Sarah White House than Amy Winehouse – she blinked and smiled behind her geeky spectacles as the vast crowd went ballistic.

For an unpopular party divided over Iraq and struggling to compete with Obama's Messianic glamour, the choice of Palin looks absolutely inspired.

Main Street America will have loved her performance.

And it was seen by 30million voters – the greatest number ever to watch a candidate for the much-derided VP post.

She is popular with voters for the very reason America's snooty political establishment despises her: She isn't one of the Washington gang.

She's a moose-hunting mum of five with a sledge-load of problems behind her own front door that workaday Americans can relate to.

A child with special needs. A daughter of 17 pregnant. A constant juggle between family and career.

As she said, her family has had its ups and downs like any other.

Last night her first task was to introduce herself and her family to an American public incredulous that the unknown Alaska governor could within weeks be a heartbeat away from being their commander in chief.

Compared to the journeyman career politicians dominating both parties here she seemed fresh, natural, one of us and not one of them.

She spoke to America as one mum to another. She cracked good jokes.

What's the difference between a hockey mum and a pit bull?, she asked.

Answer: One wears lipstick.

What will have scared the enemy camp most is the devastating series of prime-time punches she landed on the jutting Obama jaw.

Showing steel beneath her magnolia jacket, she slaughtered his lack of experience, his vanity, his emptiness beneath the windy waffle.

It was the most powerful demolition of the Democrat hero I have heard in two weeks on the US election trail.

The St Paul audience adored her.

When she duffed up the Lefty media commentators for their sexist sneers, the vast crowd roared approval and pointed in anger at the titans of the American press aloof in their special enclosure.

And quite right too: who ever asked whether Obama could still be a good dad if he became president?

The irony, as Palin pointed out, is that liberal media sniping has only succeeded in uniting Republicans behind her.

The wagons have been drawn up and the Republicans are ready for battle.

The McCain-Palin ticket now looks in exciting shape.

A war hero and a heroic mum. Experience and optimism. A man and a woman.

And when McCain joined the Palin gang – babies and boyfriends and all – on stage after her speech there was a sense of cheeky fun absent from last week's solemn Obama coronation.

How the Democrats must be regretting Hillary isn't running with Obama. Barack's sidekick Joe Biden looks a dull old dog compared with the ball of fire that is Palin.

But most fascinating of all, consider this: If Obama loses, Hillary Clinton will run in 2012. Opposing her is sure to be Sarah Palin.

That would guarantee America its first woman president.

And my fistful of dollars, having seen both in action here, would be on Palin

McCain is 72 yrs old and has had 3 bouts with cancer (Melanoma).  He would also be one of the oldest to ever serve as President, so there is a decent chance that Palin could be the first woman President before this over.

Did you see her little girl licking her hand and smoothing down the baby's hair...was that not the sweetest thing!!! If you watch the little girl she is a spit fire...she is so cute with all the waving and clapping. She steals the show sometimes. I liked the speech, sometimes the timing was off on points but over all I think it was good

I'm not sure that McCain's age is such a large factor.  I knew people in their 80's driving to Florida for the Winter, playing bridge, giving all kinds of advice to us younger folks.  70 is the new 60.  My very great gram lived to be nearly 100 and was sharp to the end.  Mr. McCains mother-
Roberta McCain is still active and, at age 96, has campaigned during her son's 2008 presidential campaign.

One of many reasons I read that women want to see a female in the White House.

with 54 percent of the audience members reporting that they do
not have a 401(k) or similar retirement savings account. This underscores the
findings of an iVillage fielded Roper poll conducted last week, which found
that over half of surveyed women cite "having enough money to live on" as
their biggest concern when thinking about financial security later in life.

Sarah Palin is a wonderful choice. I think he little Down's boy is beautiful. Her sister actually also has a Down's boy. And she must have not been too old when she had him because he is now 13. Anyway I like her style and she is a classy lady. I think McCain will be a one termer also.

I agree... I have to look into Mr. Bidens foreign experience in depth.
I wonder if the race will be very clos and that the electoral college will
decide.  I don't like to think....... we are a plutocracy.

It bears noting that the repubs were smart enough to choose a woman, Hillary tried to tell the Dems that the time had come.  And I have found the men over 60 want to see what a woman can do :)

FOX/Rasmussen Swing State Polling (OH, VA, FL, CO, PA)

Rasmussen Reports conducted five state telephone surveys in partnership with Fox News Channel on September 7, 2008. The surveys were conducted in Colorado, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. A total of 500 Likely Voters were interviewed in each state using the Rasmussen Reports automated telephone survey methodology (see www.RasmussenReports.com for details).

The margin of sampling error for the full sample in each state poll is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Caution should be used in interpreting subsets of the data as such results will have an even larger margin of sampling error. It is anticipated that larger sample sizes will be used later in the election season which will allow for a more detailed examination of demographic distinctions.

(snip)

Additionally, there were state specific timing issues in three of the five states. In Colorado, the city of Denver hosted the Democratic National Convention Colorado less than two weeks before the survey was conducted. In Florida, the survey was conducted as Hurricane Ike was approaching. In Virginia, the survey was conducted the day after Tropical Storm Hanna raced through the state.

It is not clear what, if any, impact these state-specific timing issues may have on the data.

Ohio
McCain 51%
Obama 44%

Virginia
McCain 49%
Obama 47%

Florida
McCain 48%
Obama 48%

Colorado
Obama 49%
McCain 46%

Pennsylvania
Obama 47%
McCain 45%

The Dems control Congress and they are just as bad if not worse. Both parties are in constant gridlock. McCain is a known maverick and reformer and Palin has been as well. So am hoping this will shake things up in Washington a bit.

Anyone know when Palin might stop trying to mislead everyone on the Jet she never sold on eBay?   Or the "Bridge to Nowhere" she is trying to take credit for?   She seems a little arrogant in assuming people are that dumb.

I am shocked and horrified that someone would think Sarah Palin is a good choice!  She is so far right she teeters on the edge of insanity.  A woman that would take us back to the dark ages is not what we need.  Look at her life.  She cannot possibly be a very good mother when she is narcissistically pursuing this office rather than tending to her new baby and her children.  She obviously does not have a good relationship with her daughter as to have her get pregnant at this early age.  She was probably scared to death to tell her mother that she was sexually active.  What about birth control?  This is 2008.  Don't they have Planned Parenthood in Alaska!  Or, did this Governor ban that too!

She believes that we should stop abortion rights.  Next she will be taking away the vote for women!  She is a religious extremist.  And, is it not the terrorists that want to combine religion and government?  What is so different about extremist Christians like Sarah Palin.  Get your head out of the clouds!  Just because it is a woman does not mean it is the right woman!!!

Obama gets ovation with "lipstick on pig"

LEBANON, Va - Democrat Barack Obama enjoys poking fun at his Republican opponents and their claims to being "agents of change."

"You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig, "he said as the crowd cheered and yelled and eventually got to their feet."

"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."

"We've had enough of the same old thing."

The audience, which had a particularly strong reaction whenever Obama mentioned Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, appeared to enjoy the "lipstick" comment the most.

When Palin gave her acceptance speech at the Republican convention in St. Paul she joked about being a hockey mom, saying the only difference between a pitbull and a hockey mom was lipstick.

More of the Obama stand up comedy routine. Complete with the studio audience laugh track in the background. Business as usual with this guy. Same stuff he was saying when Running in the primaries. Well Mr. Obama, what are you going to do? Huh? Speak up! The guys all about criticizing opponents, but not providing us with his solutions.

You are right! I think the Democrats are "running scared" and they have reason to. I think McCain and Palin will give them a run for their money. We will have to see how this plays out. Obama will continue to make mistakes, did you see the O'Reilly interview where he accidentally said my "Muslim faith" instead of my "Christian faith" and he quickly corrected himself?  he is under pressure, it will be good to see how he acts under pressure.  How all of them act under pressure for that matter. Sarah Palin seems to be under the most scrutiny so far, but seems to be fairing the best, as far as not letting it "get to her" but that remains to be seen.  It will be interesting to say the least!

No I don't think the democrats are running scared. Four more years of the same policies of Bush. I don't think so. McCain has never made mistakes? What about when he didn't know the difference between the different people in Iraq? I am willing to let some mistakes go on either party. This is a very tiring time for them. It is easy to make a slip of the tongue. You are right about seeing both under pressure. It is good to see how they will react.

Like I said, it will be good to see them ALL under pressure. One thing is for sure, I think these candidates will bring a big voter turn out and I think the debates will have a high amount of viewers. I know I will be watching closely.

Why doesn't he elaborate on his platform of "Change" and tell us what it is, so far all i've heard is hot air.  And furthermore every woman in america should be outraged over this remark.
r we there yet?

Let's hope Palin is not too sensitive over a remark that was not related to her.   A lot tougher road ahead...

McCain also first used the term "Lipstick on a Pig" when talking about Hillary's plan. Click here to watch.

The whole Hockey Mom thing is a little over the top for me.  It's an obvious tactic to get the mothers onboard, and I just couldn't see someone like Hillary trying that one.

As critical as I may sound, I'm still most likely voting for McCain and Palin.

Youre right it probably is overblown but I am disgusted with the way the media has treated her. Shes a strong woman and I believe a hockey Mom. I liked what she said because Im a Mom too and I relate to her pretty well. I think they should stick to the issues vs personal attacks. Its getting out of hand.

She has a humbleness about her that I do not see at all coming from the other side.

Already after two weeks, the new norm with child pregnancy is, "you can't control teens" and "they will always do what they want".  Well, I've got a news flash for everyone -- not all kids disobey their parents, and  parents "can" actually control their kids. It's amazing how fast something like teen pregnancy can become acceptable.

I dont think its acceptable at all. To the parents of the teen it is a nightmare and embarassment. This happened in my family and we had 2 wonderful parents.  I think Sarah Palin probably felt this was going to be one of the WORST YEARS OF HER LIFE after having a Down's baby and then her teen daughter gets pregnant. I think she handles everything calmly. Im impressed by her strength.

WOW! Albert. There is a fine line between abuse and control. I think you can make it very clear what your family values are and  live them but you can not control their choices. Everyone make their own choices and must live with them.
