-At the spring peak the UK had around 20.000 hospital Covid cases, the present (nov 1) number is over 10.000 and going up=lockdown to keep healthcare able to deal with healthissues (DJ most likely including other then Covid cases. In a lot of countries in spring people with cancer, heart issues and other urgent medical matters did not get the care needed). 

-UK hospital trends are going beyond worst case scenarios (DJ-There is a delay of up to 10 days between measures and effects. The UK lock down will slow down the hospital cases by november 15-but by then hospitals may find it already very hard to deal with the new number of cases. Staff getting infected is an increasing problem. Staff simply breaking down, burn out, depression is-in many countries-also a very major concern.)

Medical staff unable to do much since there were that many cases...It is sad that since spring not that much has been done-in most countries-to improve medical care. -The US elections are becoming "problematic" -I (DJ) want to keep it polite-is the US president still in good mental health ? 

-Yesterday november 5 did see over 600.000 new cases. Both Europe and the US see cases explode.

DJ-The more widespread the virus gets the more likely all kind of mutations become. Most of those mutations (the Corona virus causing COrona VIrus Disease or COVID-19 has 30.000 "blocs" in copying errors are made) make the virus weaker NOT stronger. Still some mutations may create a "new aspect" of the virus. Making the virus spread more easily or giving another form of illness (effecting other parts of the body). Also vaccinations/immunity may become a problem. You can have antibodies for an earlier strain of Covid19 NOT for a new-slightly different-strain. 

Both Denmark and Australia try to get this new form under control by isolation. The problem is there most likely will be several other mutations spreading undetected. The duration of the virus being around is also a factor-the more time for mutations the more likely you get mutations. Also most RNA virusses have 10.000 to 20.000 RNA "blocs"-Covid19 has 30.000 "blocs"-any small change can give unprecedented effects. 

DJ-It may sound "hard" but this pandemic may just be beginning. The Covid19-virus could be maybe even less then 1 year old and has become very widespread in-very likely-hundreds of millions of people. But also it did spread in tens of millions of mink. It could be other animals may have catched the virus as well (cat-like, dog-like animals, horses seem to be able to get it-have a lot of ACE-2 receptors). 

DJ-International cooperation is needed to deal with this pandemic. But that cooperation is very far away. The economic damage-worldwide-will increase. Wether via lockdowns trying to contain the disease or via massive disease spread-health care collapsing. 

Most governments fail to make long term plans to deal with this pandemic-that could be around for years...Even if vaccinations will have an effect we may be already to far in "virus variations" to deal with this pandemic by just a few vaccines. I (DJ) expect one step forward, two steps back-being repeated. Our society is facing long term changes. 

The way we live will need to change long term. I do have hope for rapid testing giving some safety on the short term. But when you look at daily lives-from (air) travel to shopping things will change..Governments have to get more realistic on that and "help" to accomodate to those changes.

Meanwhile, residents in North Jutland will be asked not to leave their home municipalities due to concerns over the spread of the mutated form of coronavirus.

Seven municipalities with confirmed coronavirus cases in mink are to be encompassed by restrictions asking residents to remain within municipal limits as far as possible.

Up to four or five percent of infections in North Jutland may be with a specific mink mutation of coronavirus that is concerning authorities due to its potential to be resistant to a vaccine.

Health authorities have concluded that the mutated virus "is not inhibited by antibodies to the same degree as the normal virus", according to AFP.

"Studies have shown that the mutations may affect the current candidates for a Covid-19 vaccine," health minister Magnus Heunicke said.

"It is a threat to the development of coronavirus vaccines. That is why it is important that we make a national effort," he added.

A potentially more disastrous outcome is that Denmark could "unwillingly be the cause of a new variant of corona being let loose not just in our own country, but in the rest of the world", according to Funding.

A failure to contain the new variant of virus could not only severely damage Denmark's international reputation, but also result in Danes being "denied entry to all the countries of the world", Funding describes as being a concern of the Danish foreign ministry.

"The worst case scenario is that we have a pandemic that starts from the beginning with its origin point in Denmark," Kåre Mølbak, technical director with the State Serum Institute (SSI), the country's infectious disease agency, said during Wednesday's briefing.

Mølbak, whose comments were reported in detail by Information, said that around half of all people in North Jutland who currently have coronavirus are infected by a mink variant of the virus. An SSI update from two days ago shows infections in the region at 4,139.

But not all of those infected with mink variants have the type which is concerning health authorities. Only nine percent, in fact, are estimated infected with the specific mutation – termed 'cluster 5' – which, according to SSI, weakens the effect of antibodies and therefore also a possible vaccine. As such, around four or five percent of infections in North Jutland could have the mutation in question.

Mølbak said he believes it is possible to contain the mutated 'cluster 5' virus and stop it from spreading from Denmark to the rest of the world.

"One thing is to remove the minks so no new introductions occur. The other thing is to ensure limitation of infection in the community," he said, noting that the R-number or reproduction rate for Covid-19 in the North Jutland health authority region is currently "just a touch over 1".

Hans Jørn Kolmos, a microbiology professor at the University of Southern Denmark, sounded a less reassuring note in his comments to Information.

"The danger is far from over, because mutations are still occurring out there as we speak. And it will take a long time to cull all the (mink) populations," he said.

"So you have to say that if we are lucky, we can contain it, but there is a clear risk of this spreading further. I believe it will be controlled, but action must be taken now," he said, also before the announcement of the North Jutland restrictions.

2-Can the strategy to contain the virus in North Jutland have a realistic chance ? How much travel is there between North Jutland and other area's ?

4-Denmark is not the only country with a large fur-industry. How likely are mutations-spreading via minks, raccoon dogs to humans in other parts of the world ? 

5-Also if there may be several mutations as result of limited human-mink-human transfer of the virus how likely is it that there is spread via other animals ? (DJ-In NL cats hang around mink farms eating spilled mink food and rats/mice. Can rats/mice get infected ? Is there cat-cat transfer of the new virus (the "normal" Covid19 virus has very limited cat-cat transfer-as far as there is testing.)

6-Will there be samples taken-on a large scale-before Denmark kills all its minks ? Has there been spread to humans/enviroment by mink-hairs ? The farms seem to do all they can to limit virusspread-still the virus escapes...one idea is that mink-hairs blowing in the wind could be a way of spreading.)

-As far as I know for NL mink farms most often only keep minks. But there may be (wild) cats around-rats/mice drop by for visits..

-Since animal rights activists have been very active against this kind of farming often there are watchdogs on the farm. 

-In the past animal right groups did destroy cages so the minks could escape. They then often die under cars, do not have much/any chance in the wild. (So there was a lot of discussion on these kind of action in animal rights groups.The market for fur-products is decreasing so increasing security costs makes mink farms less profitable. Often mink farms (in NL) are in area's were the land has limited other uses, there were large families so for economy reasons other forms of farming also did not work. 

A family can have several familymembers having their own mink farms. The largest mink farms can have tens-of-thousends of minks, also a lot of (temporary-foreign workers) staff. Most of the workers-certainly in these days-only work on ONE farm. 

-There have been minks showing up in some area's-maybe escaping but more likely dumped. Sometimes these minks were found to be infected. It may be farmers dumped infected minks to "save the production". (If they would follow the official way-even one infected mink could mean ALL minks being killed-end of the farm). 

-In some area's of NL they did test the virus showing up in infected people living near farms to see if it came from nearby mink farms. So far those tests turned out negative. The only humans infected by minks did show up in farm workers. They themselves did spread those mink virus to other family members. 

-What I do get from the Danish story is that-in DK (Denmark)- mink-to-human infections did see more humans spreading the mink-mutated virus.

LONDON — The World Health Organization said on Friday it would review biosecurity measures across the globe after Danish health authorities found a mutated form of the coronavirus present in the country’s mink farms.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said earlier this week that the government planned to cull all 15 million minks in Danish farms to try to reduce the risk of the animals re-transmitting the new strain of the coronavirus to humans.

The US reported 1248 deaths-in one day. France had 828 deaths in just a single day. 

Most likely there will be "corrections" in the statistics. The Dutch number included  27 people that died in march and april...If there was underreporting in the US because of the elections of course that is not good. 

The US now has 730 Deaths Per Million of population (DPM)-at #10. Argentina 731, Bolivia748, Chile 754...Belgium is at #2 with 1079 dpm-but that number may include all POSSIBLE covid deaths-could be a slightly different number. (San Marino-a mini state in Italy has 1237 dpm-on a population of under 34.000).

I certainly agree with you, Josh, that Trump is not the only problem.  But he is the first "road hazard" to deal with, and then we can deal with all with the others.  To me, those of us who find Trump and Trumpism distasteful need to be aware that the problem is half-solved, as you said.  And there are some of us who get that, and are willing to keep on the pressure. 

There is a lot of good old Republican conservatism that, although it is not my cup of tea politically, I can see good common sense in it, and I can see why those who embrace those particular ideals, do so.  I may disagree with them, but I have no animus toward them.  They are folks who see the world differently than I, and that is all.

But Trumpism is another thing altogether.  It is threatened by diversity, and reacts with fearful bluster toward it.  It wants to subjugate people it feels threatened by, and/or is used to dominating, and will go to great lengths to do so.  It is spiteful to those who disagree with it, and is not above intimidation, and implied and actual violence to keep them down.  It will fire and destroy colleagues who are not in lockstep, and will alienate allies if they do not share it's worldview, and pursue its goal.  It favors passive-aggressive missives to engaging in calm and fruitful discussions.  It thrives on chaos, not on peace.  

Republicans will have to decide what kind of party they want.  I did not like Reagan much, nor agree with about half of what he represented, but he was a safe president overall. Would Reagan recognize his party now, let alone Eisenhower, Teddy Roosevelt or Lincoln?

There are good Republicans who stand for decency.  They need to take control of their party.  They are people with a respectable vision for this country, even if I disagree with some of it.  Most Democrats could sit down at the table with them and bargain reasonable legislation, work across the aisle.  These Trumpers, there's no working with them, and the direction the country has taken under them has been repugnant.

Also 9190 deaths-US had 1345 of them..The US has a population of just over 330 milion. That makes 330.000 0.1% of all US population-in ONE day something like 0.04% of the US population tested positive...With over 245.000+ US deaths close to 0.08% of the US population died from Covid19 within about 10 months.

Yes-some countries do worse-often small countries. Latin America has a problem. In Europe some countries-Belgium, Czech Republic, are hard hit. In spring Italy and Spain did bad. But the US is doing poor most of the year...

Larger countries have a function for their region. In Europe Germany is helping other countries if there is a need. The US soon may not be able to help a lot-may be running out of hospital beds. It will be a hard winter-vaccines can not change that.

-Another note-Even with maximum test capacity some people with infections will not be found. They may have no or mild complaints, not recognize the symptoms well enough. With between 20 to 40% a/pre-symptomatic spread one should use testing to test ALL.  

In lots of countries even those who did test positive do not stay at home enough-keep spreading the virus. Civil liberties are great, essential-but when you are dealing with a pandemic the priority has to be to STOP virus spread...

In communications governments are not very clear-young people "do not get the virus", only "the old and vulnarable die"-this is NOT how to deal with a pandemic. 

Sad point is that pandemics are on the rise. We should be organizing societies to better deal with pandemics. How can you have freedom-if possible also of movement-and limit virusspread. -In the media there is a lot of attention for vaccines. They will have to make an end to this Covid19-pandemic because "we" seem to be unable to do it in a non-pharma way. A number of countries (Australia, New Zealand, China etc.) did get the pandemic under control by social distancing, masks etc. I think that strategy still is the best; low risk, low cost and effective.

I do have my doubts on the miracles politics/media expect vaccines to do. To get all/most of my country-the Netherlands (NL) vaccinated would-at least-take a year. With almost 18 million of population getting-on average 1,5 million people vaccinated per month is a very major job. Certainly when you would need TWO vaccinations-like the Pfizer or Sputnik-V vaccine need to have.

It would be nice if the effectiveness of the vaccine would be longer then a year-Dr. J.C. loves to mention immunity for SARS-1 from 2003 lasting till now. But that immunity was/is in people who did get SARS-1. So the immune reaction is both via B-cell (antibody) and T-cell. Translating that to vaccinations may be a bit optimistic-at least. 

There must be a lot of "variations/mutations" of Covid19-and new mutations will increase. With more people-and most likely animals-getting infected-the more mutations (mistakes made when the virus copies itself-most of the time making the virus less of a risk-but still-since the extreme large numbers-enough times to increase risks for humans and (other) animals.)

To deal with this pandemic we need good and realistic communications. Non Pharma Intervention will be our main defense. Vaccines can and will help. But we may have to deal with Covid19 for at least a few years...(Indian pharma-producer claimed if everybody on the globe would be vaccinated by 2024 it would be very good.)

Politics, media, experts most of the time would like to present short term answers...I (DJ) do not think that that shows realism.

The US with over 161.000 new cases, 1190 deaths...it looks bad-but if you would put it in another order-say the US had 33 million people instead of 331 million-then the number of 16.100 new cases, 119 deaths almost sounds "European". 

To put it in perspective the US is at #16 in cases per million. The 15 other countries doing worse only include 3 "real countries".

At #4 there is Belgium. (Population 11 million)-That very divided country has SIX governments ! One federal, one for the Dutch, French. German speaking part, one for Brussel(s)-the capital and there seems to be even another government...The main reason why Flanders is still part of Belgium is that they do not want to give up Brussel(s)-once the largest Dutch speaking city in the Low Countries. About 4,5% of the population (44.399 per 1.000.000=4,4399 per 100) . Belgium has 1185 deaths per million (dpm)-but the Belgian number includes also suspected Covid-deaths.

In Belgium there is a large Jewish Orthodox community. Also a lot of migrant-background people living in bad housing did get infected. 

At #6 there is Czechia. What I do understand is they did quite well in the first wave but underestimated the second wave. Population 10,7 million-4,16% tested positive dpm 537

At #13 is Israel. Also a very divided country. From orthodox Jews to Palestinians-poor large families to well educated very western elite. Netanyahu managed to split the country-causing widespread protests. Now a strict lockdown (also to prevent anti-Netanyahu demonstrations) is showing effect. On bad days 10.000 new cases per day showed up in this country of almost 10 million. Over 0,1% of the population at some days tested positive. So far 3,5% of population did get infected-dpm (only) 294

The other top 15 countries in cases per million often have a population of less then 1 million. Panama and Armenia (in a war) are the largest of them. 

At #16 is the US !!!!! Hardly doing better then Panama with 3,3% of the population infected. In the deaths per million the US is at #10. (749 dpm). Spain at #17 gets close to the US with 3,2% of its population testing positive (and 865 dpm).

-There is/was hope we may have peaked in most of Europe for the second wave in new cases. But in NL the cases are going up again. Also some other countries do not see the progress they hoped for.

DJ-Can you compare countries ? Yes-I just did ! Sweden, Scandinavia is not densely crowded-for the most part. Social distancing is in the culture for most there. Extra vitamin D may help a lot. 

The Netherlands, Belgium, some other parts of Europe are almost mega-cities. Any virus can spread much easier-we have a high mobility-not only international but also inside the country or region. 

The US may be a mix of both-mega cities and more rural. Still-when you look at (limited) statistics the US is doing "not very well" in this pandemic. That is not only a US problem ! The US would like to be the "center of the world" but that ambition does not go well with high infection rate. 

The US did do "not very well" ever since the start of this pandemic. In part the problem is political. What I (DJ) find very interesting in this crisis is the many aspects of it. Communication is a very major part of that. 

In NL about 20% tends to believe Covid19 is non-sense. In the US that percentage could be 50% almost ? Some people think their religion may protect them (we had the South Korea church related superspreader a.o., also in Israel some orthodox groups refused to accept limitations) and become a risk.

-In Greece two mink farms did find Covid19-minks got killed. (At least) one worker also tested positive. Uncertain yet if he infected the minks or the mink-virus jumped to the worker...Although experts disagree on how much risk there is in Covid19 in animals-it could develop away from humans-if you want to get the spread under control you do not want Covid19 in any other animal then humans !

-There was some hope in parts of Europe we may have peaked in the second wave. But cases started going up in NL, Germany the last few days. Most experts expect a further increase with Christmas, New Year, schools reopening in january..DJ-Schools may be a bigger factor in virus spread. For a lot of countries closing schools is not an easy decission. 

-On vaccines there were some "plans" to go for on average 1,5 million vaccinations per mont in NL-giving all the people in NL a vaccination (or two ???) in 2021. One producer of vaccines told a government worker they would be very happy with 10.000 vaccines per month...

The idea that with vaccines, better testing, NPI we can "reboost"the economy in 21 is a fantasy. The Animals Rights Party here in NL already stated-we can NOT go back to the old abnormal !!! Limit meat production, airtravel etc. We are still destroying our planet high-speed ! Eco-cide is the "old normal". Climate change is the motor behind pandemics...

-In the US trump made (not) dealing with  the pandemic part of a campain (to stay president). There will be a big pro-trump protest in Washington D.C.-no doubt another super spreader event. A lot of people around trump already did get infected...

The US do see limits on US travel as anti US actions. A lot of European countries tend to react the same way...

If you look at four major "countries" and how they deal with this pandemic;

-China has most of the spread under control. Had a very strict lockdown early on, a lot of testing, contact tracing, travel restrictions.

-India may be facing a second wave. Limited access to healthcare and testing. In spring a lot of workers (200 million ?) lost their job and returned to their vilages taking Covid19 with them. India has internal borders-can enforce some lockdowns. But income inbalance is extreme. The real number of Covid cases/deaths may be 10 times the official number ? 

-EU-We may not be that "united" as the US-there are lots of difference between EU member states. A major problem here is half measures. Germany did very well-most of the time. Southern states, NL, Belgium did not so good. Even a strict lockdown may have limited effect-in most countries people think rules are not made for them-lack of discipline and unclear government communications. 

-US The trump government does not see Covid19 as a real problem. Action has to be taken on state-level or even more local. Maybe up to 50% of the US population considers masks political, Covid19=flu etc. In a normal year close to 1 million US households face bankruptcy over medical bills. Healt insurance often is linked to a job. A biden government may bring some improvements in 21.

DJ-There are lots of factors that play a role in this pandemic. In statistics you can see state borders. So there is human influence. A rise in cases was expected in autumn and winter. In general if politics/government does not have a realistic vision on this pandemic it influences what the general public will do...Some long term discussions-on fur-farming, fireworks, will be influenced by this pandemic (both stopped this year in NL).

In a discussion on how effective a countries actions against this pandemic has been statistics can be of-limited-help. In Belgium they reported also suspected Covid deaths as Covid deaths-some other countries did exclude a lot of clear Covid deaths (a.o. from care centers) from their statistics. Also "corrections", redefinitions can blur the numbers. 

I have a history background-the most important reason why people do not learn from history is because they do NOT WANT to learn from history-this "second wave"is unbelievable stupid-repeating mistakes made during the first waves...limited/no testing, open borders, airtravel, spendingcuts on care...

In total cases per million  (cpm) Belgium-of larger countries-is "top of the list" (but they did also report suspected-not tested cases).  45,766 cpm. Israel has 35,198 cpm (just a reminder some countries use , others . but we are talking over 35 thousend+ per million not 35..) The US has 34,266 cpm. 

Countries like Spain, France do better then the US but worse then Brazil. In this cases-per-million list the UK is at #41 with "only" 20,131 cases per million (cpm) . But these numbers are on ALL of 2020. Sweden is at 17,520 cases per million at #51. 

Is Sweden "an example" ? No they are doing far worse then other Scandinavian/Baltic countries !!! Sweden is a disaster in pandemic dealing ! Authorities coy regarding whether or not workers have been infected with the mutated form of the virus

In the last week, more than 200 cases of coronavirus have been reported across six mink fur sites in the west of Denmark, according to a Twitter post by Styrelsen for Patientsikkerhed.
