I am prepping, but I don't have a gun. I have lots of water and some food. I am trying to find out if I should get a gun and I am trusting the majority. I am also trying to feel out the users stand on this.

I accidently put the "No, not necessary" answer in the Poll Question line. The Question should be "Should we include guns in our prepping?" I will say that the "Mayb"e answer could taken as a "NO".

Sorry, everyone.

A gun is good to have ... all my gramma's had 22's for chicken hawks, coyotes and wild dog packs.  Of course, most the time they just shot above their heads ~ until they became more than a nuisance, especially the chicken hawk!!

By all means, LEARN to use your gun and clean it as well ... nothing worse than your weapon jammin up on you be it the pea-shooter or the BIG guns!!

It's either going to be you having a gun, or you being a victim. I've got no plans on being a victim.

Great post! With so many owners of dogs becoming ill and dying there will be roaming wild dog packs. A gun will kill or frighten off four legged and two legged mad dogs.

This is one of those things that I know I need to get, and I have just dragged my feet on getting one. I do think it's a necessary prep, just a pain in the butt to get the permits.

I took a bath the other night and upon returning found my husband aiming at coyotes from our bedroom window.
He has a paint gun especially for them. We can hear and see them running close to our home at night.

it's an absolute necessity.  you should consider a small group [or battery as some call it] of firearms, some for food production and some for defense.  but you gotta do what you can.

Wow, those things regularly kill people's pets. They'll even try for a smal child if they got the chance.

OMG

You use your firearms for food production?
How long does it take to cultivate you garden with a 30.06, does it take longer with a lever action. Won't the dirt clog up the barrell, which end of the gun do you put the seeds in.

I am sure you meant something else, dont take my reply tooo seriously. I am just in a cheeky mood.

If you prep without owning several firearms and knowing how to use them and have well thought out defensive plans for your primary and secondary location, then you are really only prepping for the well armed person who is going to take your preps off you.

it's ok, you put the seeds in the barrel, it's next to the magwell where you get the water.  be very careful about the products of the butt, it does make the tomatoes grow.

all jokes aside, part of the weapon equation is determining how dedicated you are willing to be to learning about your new tool.  shooting skills and tactics aside you also need to address the maintainance issues, spare parts, whether or not you are emotionally capable of using it.

these issues are very important.  there's not much use spending money on something that you won't or can't use.

Absolutely, I believe we should have guns and learn how to use it ahead of time so you are comfortable with it. You may not have to use it but it will hopefully scare someone away BUT IF you have to use it you better know how to use it so you don't shoot yourself in the foot or kill one of your own.

They have banned guns here in the UK so I couldn't vote.   You can have a rifle if you have  a permit and a safe and training and that seems a lot of effort. Also as guns are so scare if there was a shooting in my village the police would eventually know where to look.

Besides my machete and axe does anyone have any suggestions about other forms of defense?  I read a lof of conficting advice about pepper sprays - not that they are legal here but they are easier to get over the net than guns...

Pepper spray doesn't really work on a determined attacker, also some people are naturally resistant to it. Those that eat a large amount of very spicy food genereally are not affected quite as much as those that do not.

They outlawed guns there and now only your criminals have them. That's kind of scary if you ask me, particularly the fact that the violent crime rate over there skyrocketed when they banned them. You're six times more likely to be mugged, attacked, etc in London than in New York!

Webferret, consider using wasp spray or oven cleaner.Aside from guns, we have added pepper grenades to our preps.I don't now if its' legal in the UK but a taser type weapon will be useful.

Wasp spray now theres an idea.  I used some wasp next destroyer last summer and it shoots a foam spray over 2 meters.

I also have a 2kg CO2 fire extinguisher - I've never let one off but I assume that the icy blast would work at close range  - as long as they haven't got a gun!

You must prepare for the worse. Get a gun and ammo, learn how to use it, and put it in a safe place. The time may come when you will need to protect yourself and your family.

I will soon be renewing my CWpermit by attending 16 hrs. of gun range and laws on gun use. I have been to 3 of these classes and learn some new laws each time. I strongly advise a class offered thru gun shops before you invest in a gun then find you are not comfortable in any situation to use it.

Guns are a recurring topic and there are as many opinions as there are guns. At one time I read there were more guns in the US than television sets. Imagine that. Shotguns are effective, close range, and easy to operate. I'd go with a 20 guage rather than 12 for most folks. Less recoil, lighter, but still powerful. A pump is inexpensive. Buy a used, but good condition entry level gun for $200 or less, take some training and you are set.

not bad advice at all, 20 gauge offers 1/2 the recoil for 3/4 of the payload.  pretty good trade off if you ask me.

I just don't want to be a victim.  It is better to have something and don't need it, and need it and don't have it.
Twice in my life of 57 years having a gun, I believe saved my life.
Once I stopped a car jacking with a quick reflex with my 357 revolver, and a second time I belirve that I saved my life from a pack of feral dogs (on my own property)  with a 380 pistol. (warning shot turned the pack)

We're mountain folk up here, and this year both my 12 year old grandaughter was drawn for bull elk with rifle, and my 12 year old grandson drawn for deer with rifle.

Last year my other grandson got his bull elk with a bow.

Joy to the world!

hi web ferret, if i did not have a firearm, my next weapon would be a crossbow with razor broad-heads. (I've used one) i would rather be shot. years ago, early 60's i had a wrist rocket slingshot that was modified to shoot crossbow bolts at close range was wicked indeed. check eBay for an old one, or even better make one yourself.

Turboguy, Thanks for the link, I know I will be buying a bipod and mags from there. But I didn't see where they sold guns, maybe I missed something. I am in the market for a Glock and $400 would be very cheap. I tried down loading the catalog but it was taking too long, I only have a dialup. I will try to download the catalog later. Thanks again Bill.

Yeah bill they do not sell guns off the internet so you can either download their catalog or just call them and they'll be more than happy to send you one through snail mail.

Trust me when I say that they *DO* sell firearms though. I've bought six guns from them and have been absolutely saisfied with them every time. They're professional and will bend over backwards and walk over fire just to make sure you're happy.

    web,

take a wood baseball bat and insert land scaping nails into it. divide the end of the bat into 4 sides. put the nails there. put 2 on the end. you will need a drill press and a grinder. use epoxy glue to set the nails.

Warren Buffett says by any common sense definition we are in a recession but life will go on. It is not as bad as 1973-1974.

I would bet most of us do not have big portfolios. Stay out of debt, pay off your home, and keep your job as best you can.

So buck up folks it may look bad but it is not bad enough to create civil unrest.

Warren Buffett's stock price for his company is 140K for one share, still lives in a house he has had for 30 years, is not leaving his kids any of his billions and thinks rich guys like him should pay much bigger taxes than us poor guys. This man is no dummy!

I have watched people lose their homes, cars and retirements/investments in "recessions" over the last 45 years, and there was and will never be civil unrest over this issue because it does not affect that many people.

Be more afraid of the BF when people start dying or starving is when you will see civil unrest.
