I have heard that the SA variant is going around the vaccines , rendering them less effective.  It appears to be able to go around the protection by mutations.......  So what do we do now ? is it back ot the lockdowns ?  or as  some have said, we are going to have to live with an increased death rate.

it won't go back to lockdowns until either of these varieties starts to spread rapidly and overwhelms hospitals.  Its just whether that is going to happen or not.  Since the virologists are still worried, so am I....but I hope we are all wrong and it dies out!!

I don't think we're going to get that lucky, Roni.  Some of the vaccine makers are working on booster shots that will address the variants, but it is my fear that we will always be one step behind this virus.

A recent study from the UK that appeared in PLoS modeled that the UK variant case numbers are doubling every 10 days in the U.S. Since the SA and Brazilian variants have similar R0 it would seem their growth would follow similarly. Hope not, but there it is.

Getting vaccine means you probably won't end up in hospital, sick maybe but not dead.....

I'd rather not get virus.....inlaws kids had it in UK,still no taste or smell after 2 months they only 16/18

 take care all 😷😉

As a long hauler and as a dsiabled man, Let me just say that Covid is a massive killer.  First if you live past intubation, your lfie is going to suck for awhile.  Some days you will envy the dead as you go from one issue to another.  I would wonder if I was in Hell or  something out of a B grade horror flick.  There is nothing worse than your own mind playing tricks on you.  So, if you ge tit , you hope it is  mild or you die.  The hellish universe i was a part of is nothing i want to see another person  go thru.

Thanks, ME.

I think that if you we're going to get the vaccine, you should still, as a foundation for the booster, and to obtain whatever protection it may offer.  It may be the difference between life and death, or moderate illness and long-haul.

Some people in South Africa have been re-infected with variants of Covid-19 after they had already recovered from the virus, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) chief scientist, Soumya Swaminathan, said on Friday.

“We are now getting reports of people getting re-infected with the new variant of the virus, and there have been some initial reports from South Africa suggesting that people who have had prior infection could get infected again,” she told a WHO news briefing.

One study from South Africa published in pre-print format last month found the country’s indigenous mutation, 501Y.V2, showed “substantial or complete escape” from the human body’s neutralizing antibodies that target Covid-19.

“These data highlight the prospect of re-infection” and may “foreshadow reduced efficacy” of vaccines, according to the study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed.

DJ-Study from RT link https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7836116/ or https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7836116/SARS-CoV-2 501Y.V2, a novel lineage of the coronavirus causing COVID-19, contains multiple mutations within two immunodominant domains of the spike protein. Here we show that this lineage exhibits complete escape from three classes of therapeutically relevant monoclonal antibodies. Furthermore 501Y.V2 shows substantial or complete escape from neutralizing antibodies in COVID-19 convalescent plasma. These data highlight the prospect of reinfection with antigenically distinct variants and may foreshadow reduced efficacy of current spike-based vaccines.

https://www.ynetnews.com/health_science/article/HJPijlVxu or https://www.ynetnews.com/health_science/article/HJPijlVxu ; An Israeli who has recovered from coronavirus was found Sunday to have been reinfected with the pathogen's South African variant, the first such case in Israel.  The 57-year-old man from central Israel, who recovered from coronavirus in August, recently returned from a trip to Turkey and is the second Israeli to be officially diagnosed with the mutation after visiting that country.

The other cases were diagnosed among people who returned from South Africa, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.
Health officials worry the variant - along with the British and Californian mutation  (which are considered far more infectious) - could infect people who had already recovered from the disease and are not vaccinated.
"The sheer fact that we have diagnosed a reinfection with the South African variant for the first time is very disturbing," a health official said.

DJ We may learn from the SA variant in Israel what to expect further...

DJ-Shopowners face bankruptcy-so they reopen even if this means legal problems...Some groups may not accept vaccination-what number offers what protection...The UK variant already is a problem in Israel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/501.V2_variant#Statistics or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/501.V2_variant#Statistics Israel already has 80 SA variant cases so far...

That means that the SA variant is also in Turkey....

According to   https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/turkey/ Turkey's case load is way down from the peak in December. Their per-capita testing seems reasonable (ie not very low), so maybe this variant is not yet widely spread in Turkey.
