Ok  as  a young girl I remember my granma having redish colored beans hanging on the wall of her dining room. I would love to know what kind, and directions to do this ( ooohh my hubby will be so thrilled Wink !)  These were always the best tasting beans in a pressure cooker with cornbread. Mmmm.    So  does anyone else remember or do this ???   Thanks ! Hoosiermom.

Ok after a little research they were called "Leatherbritches or  Shuckey" beans,  from what I have read you put the strings off them stringing them( with needle and thread thru the center ) still in the hulls/pods.  Many cooked them with some salty pork. This soo sounds like how my granma would have cooked them. My mom only remembers eating pork occasional chicken, beans and garden foods, and cornbread.

Not sure what variety of bean.  This would be a good method if you could'nt can in the summer or simply ran out of jars.  Smile

Hello, HoosierMom,

There is a wonderful website called Hillbilly Housewife which deals with frugal homemade recipes.  I have been sampling her recipes for well over a year after reading a Canadian reader's post on Urban Survival.  Maggie has a recipe for your beans as well as how to string them up.  They are simply any green bean but I am pretty sure the oldtimers used Kentucky Wonder Pole Beans.

Hope that helps.
