DJ, see if this still functions...

I get error notices after posting at "what will kill us"...this forum is "old"...maybe its technique may have some problems ?

So -where are we today ?

Both "wars" and "pandemics" become long term stories...both not likely to be over soon...both also "changing/mutating"....There are some similarities in both;

-exhausting "the enemy/the immunesystem" both result in severe economic damage...

-New means, interventions, anti-virals or NATO weapons for now do not solve the problem...

-If we can not control the problem we may face a very major crisis (nuclear war, global health crisis worse then we ever did see...)

-Of course both wars and pandemics cost a lot of money...we are getting poorer every day...

-Both pandemics and wars have climate collapse as a background...

So climate; http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2022/12/the-short-lifespan-of-technological-civilizations-and-the-future-of-homo-sapiens.html or http://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2022/12/the-short-lifespan-of-technological-civilizations-and-the-future-of-homo-sapiens.html ; In his book ‘Collapse’ (2011) Jared Diamond portrays the fate of societies which Choose to Fail or Succeed. On a larger scale the Fermi’s paradox suggests that advanced technological civilizations may constitute ephemeral entities in the galaxy, destined to collapse over short periods.

Such an interpretation of Fermi’s paradox, corroborated by recent terrestrial history, implies that the apparent absence of radio signals from Milky Way planets and beyond may be attributed to an inherently self-destructive nature of civilizations which reached the ability to propagate radio waves, consistent with Carl Sagan’s views

It can be expected therefore that the number of advanced technological societies in the universe will be proportional to their average lifetime, perhaps lasting no more than a few centuries. Inexplicably, the behavior of Homo “sapiens” reveals the reality of Fermi’s paradox, unless humans can wake up in time.

DJ (wiki);

The Fermi paradox is the discrepancy between the lack of conclusive evidence of advanced extraterrestrial life and the apparently high a priori likelihood of its existence, and by extension of obtaining such evidence.[1][2] As a 2015 article put it, "If life is so easy, someone from somewhere must have come calling by now."[3]

Italian-American physicist Enrico Fermi's name is associated with the paradox because of a casual conversation in the summer of 1950 with fellow physicists Edward Teller, Herbert York, and Emil Konopinski. While walking to lunch, the men discussed recent UFO reports and the possibility of faster-than-light travel. The conversation moved on to other topics, until during lunch Fermi blurted out, "But where is everybody?" (although the exact quote is uncertain).[3][4]

There have been many attempts to resolve the Fermi paradox,[5][6] such as suggesting that intelligent extraterrestrial beings are extremely rare, that the lifetime of such civilizations is short, or that they exist but (for various reasons) humans see no evidence.

So "are we programmed" for selfdestruction ? Is there a "peak-civilization" and did we cross that point ?

DJ, to put it simple Russia has three goals in/for Ukraine;

-de-nazi-fy it...(Russia claims nazi's play a major role in the Kiev government)

-De-militarize Ukraine

-Keep Ukraine out of NATO...

Western intervention did result in Russia now also destroying western weapons, western "volunteers" ...maybe up to a level it is damaging western/NATO defense...Another aspect is position of countries did change...

Western "demand" of sanctions against Russia did push India, China...even Saudi Arabia away from that west over time...

In the pandemic;

-go for "herd/group"immunity...based on what we did see with very limited spread of SARS-1 in 2003...we had less travel more action in 2003...

-Non Pharma Interventions; masks, lock downs, travel restrictions...they did show some effect...however there was NO international coordination...a pandemic is a global problem...So some countries went for lock downs other countries did see new variants...travel did see those new variants go around the globe...

-Of course if you have a "work/study from home"situation, small household, suburban the situation is much different from those that have to use public transport to go to high risk jobs and live in small houses with three-four generations in overcrowded poor urban area's...The poor are suffering much harder from this pandemic (I believe twice as many of them-per 1000- died...)..we are NOT in the same boat...

-Healthcare has been in permanent crisis for over two years now...increasing number of HCW-ers get ill, look for better pay-lower risk jobs...

-Vaccines were supposed to change the perspectives...they did;

 -Since the vaccines were non-sterilizing they did NOT stop infections, only limited disease...

 -Outcome of that is more immune evasion...virus-variants getting better in working around immunity (after infection and/or vaccination).

 -Vaccines themselves are medical interventions, not without risks...a lot of discussion on the risks vaccines may bring...

 -Also some anti-virals on the long term may see more immune evasion...

DJ-I want to stay out of vaccine discussions...most countries offer vaccines for free for those that want them...It was NEVER !!! a pandemic of the unvaccinated !!! (and that is part of a non-sterilizing vaccine problem). And -yes- safety in high risk bio-labs may be an issue...but another pandemic was expected...SARS-1, Spanish Flu did not see "lab-leak"discussions...

So...(western) strategies so far not very effective...both in wars and pandemics (I do not even want to start on climate collapse...empty bla-bla is an insult to the intellect !).

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

So...how to solve problems ?

OPEC+ (the "+" =Russia...) decreases oil production so "markets" pay more for less oil....

The neo-liberal dominated west create more money...give it to private companies (and part sponsors, who would be shareholders in those tax-funded "private" companies...) to "solve the problem"...in practice often resulting in kicking the can down the road, buying time...Of course a few people get very rich this way...others have to pay for "creating" money via inflation...they get more poor...

Pushing hundreds of billions into -for profit- big pharma companies-(not making a profit out of a crisis is "socialism"???) did not solve the problem...So we create even more money-now also hundreds of billions for the military industrial complex (mic)...in fact producing death...(means to kill).

I think the neo-liberal "strategy" is a dead end street...increasing speed there only results in more damage...But "we live in a democracy/democrazy...with billionaires owned "free" press"...political parties-ending up repeating the same mistakes under different names...

-"Putin" did it ! From trump becoming US president to Brexit....so "if we only could get rid of Putin"....Bring "freedom and democrazy" to Russian oil and gas...

-China did it, lab-leak, the "CCP-virus"....

Breaking up Russia, China, a pro-western dictator in Iran, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria ? That is the present idea of solving the crises we face ? Stupidity rules ! For-profit-wars making the 0,1% even more rich..."let the virus do its thing"  for the other 99,9%...

Pandemics...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandemic or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandemic are not new...It may have been even a bigger problem in the past since we lacked lots of knowledge then..."it was the work of god"...

There is a discussion on "twin-demic" etc. but in past pandemics other diseases also went out of control...it also was a general healthcrisis...

Do people die "from" or "with"CoViD ? Maybe the main point is they die....excess deaths...lots of co-infections and healthdamage-no doubt one way (more spread of other diseases) or the other (delay in care for cancer, heartproblems, depression) linked to the pandemic.

This discussion is a bit like an earthquake causing the break of a dam resulting in flooding...some people died of the earthquake, others from the following flooding (or tsunami)...for the big picture this discussion "from/with CoViD" may be pointless...

We are now at a stage were we https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/sars-cov-2-variants-ongoing-onslaught-of-covid-19-infections-soon-to-be-lead-by-new-cluster-of-sub-lineages-including-ch-1-1,-ch-3,-xay-2,-xbc,-xbf,-b or https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/sars-cov-2-variants-ongoing-onslaught-of-covid-19-infections-soon-to-be-lead-by-new-cluster-of-sub-lineages-including-ch-1-1,-ch-3,-xay-2,-xbc,-xbf,-b are seeing a "variant soup" https://outbreak.info/situation-reports or https://outbreak.info/situation-reports over 1100 "variants" all named Omicron.....

A virus only has one mission-create-via hosts-as many new virusses....so https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exponential_growth or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exponential_growth would follow if we did not react...Most diseases "stop themselves" via group immunity or running out of hosts...

The problem with CoViD is that it has been detected in over 100 species...may have hundreds of billions of hosts...humans are "only" 8 billion of its hosts...

So...yes there is a problem....we better wake up...the "nuclear solution" may be worse !

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

A few other points;

-Earthquakes; https://www.zerohedge.com/weather/fourth-strongest-quake-texas-history-rattles-nations-largest-fracking-region or https://www.zerohedge.com/weather/fourth-strongest-quake-texas-history-rattles-nations-largest-fracking-region ;

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake rattled parts of the Permian basin on Friday. The area is the largest oil-producing region in the US, located in West Texas -- and has more fracking operations than anywhere in the world.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck northwest of Midland around 5:35 pm local time, and three minutes later, a tremor of magnitude 3.3 followed.

-

Earthquakes have been linked to fracking operations. Latest data via Bloomberg shows shale oil production in Permian Basin has jumped to a record high.

The USGS wrote in a recent study that a magnitude-five quake that struck West Texas in 2020 resulted from frackers injecting wastewater into wells in the region.

DJ...The US did increase oil production-it was the major oil producer in the first part of the 20th century...However;

-The US energy consumption is "very high" so export of US energy is limited...

-Exploration is expensive; to outcompete "other energy sources" sanctions against Russia, Iran are "usefull"...

-Fracking is destructive, linked to water polution and earthquakes (here in NL gas exploration had to stop because damages became larger then profits).

We have to decrease fossil fuel use...get more clever in the way we use energy...not only for the climate but also because energy is limited....

https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/policies/green-deal/fit-for-55-the-eu-plan-for-a-green-transition/ or https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/policies/green-deal/fit-for-55-the-eu-plan-for-a-green-transition/  The EU has plans to reduce energy use...a major question is if we do have that much time...(lots of indications for "No"!!! we did cross a point of no return and may face very serious problems within a few years...).

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?currentFeatureId=us6000ja43&extent=-80.2385,-376.17188&extent=84.9901,186.32813 or https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?currentFeatureId=us6000ja43&extent=-80.2385,-376.17188&extent=84.9901,186.32813 showing a general increase of seismic activity...Less ice on Greenland, Alps, Himalaya, Antarctica etc does mean less pressure of ice and snow-the underlying landmass is pushed up-resulting in more seismic activity...

DJ-My "hope" is increased glacier-ice flow into the oceans may have a cooling effect...a "positive-cooling-feedback" but if that will be enough to undo the damage a.o. from more methane release ?

https://www.zerohedge.com/personal-finance/these-are-worlds-most-expensive-cities or https://www.zerohedge.com/personal-finance/these-are-worlds-most-expensive-cities ;

According to this year's index, the average cost of living in the world's largest cities increased by 8.1 percent in 2022, as a repercussion of the war in Ukraine and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The war in Ukraine, Western sanctions on Russia and China's zero-Covid policies have caused supply-chain problems that, combined with rising interest rates and exchange-rate shifts, have resulted in a cost-of-living crisis across the world," Upasana Dutt, who was responsible for leading the research, said in a statement. Dutt added that the average price increase in the cities analyzed is "the strongest we've seen in the 20 years for which we have digital data."

In other words most of us in fact did get poorer...also less money to spent on healthcare(insurance), medical costs...

https://health-study.joinzoe.com/data or https://health-study.joinzoe.com/data UK self reported CoViD-cases may be getting above the january and february peaks...soon will reach 3 million...
