There is an interesting report on a former Finnish President, on how the pandemic is showing a change in world order.

The coronavirus pandemic is the first crisis in which there is no expectation that the United States will lead the world out of the dilemma, according to former President Tarja Halonen.

In an interview with daily Helsingin Sanomat, Halonen said that the pandemic has revealed a geopolitical shift.

"This is the first crisis where there is no belief that the United States will lead us out. But of course the enemy -- or challenge -- is different and the pandemic has hit the US hard," Halonen said in the Sunday edition of the paper.

Halonen said that the pandemic is final proof of a shift in the geopolitical power balance in which Cold War era divisions no longer exist. She added that European leaders no longer see the US standing at the centre of the current world order. In this post-American world China is amassing economic and military power in the same way as other authoritarian states such as Turkey and Russia.

"Several centres are forming. This kind of multipolarisation is difficult to manage, especially if autocrats concentrate power. They also want to dominate larger areas. And in time that will also show in global politics," she pointed out.

I was surprised at how forthright she was in some comments.  We have been used to the dualism of Cold War thinking (and the American Party system), so it might take some getting used to the idea that there might be a multitude of power centres.

I, however, agree that I have not seem great American political leadership regarding this pandemic, and soon despaired of seeing it  This is a pity as they have some really great medical research facilities (like the John Hopkins University was the site to go to for data rather than WHO).

Not included in the quote above, and not complementary to the EU was:-  "Europe as a shrinking economic zone caught between the United States and China "
